Enshrouded has no fixed character classes. You earn skill points from levelling and quests, then spend them across six core stats, so your first “class” is simply the direction of your early build. For a reliable opening, craft a Stone Axe and Stone Pickaxe, place a Flame Altar on flat ground outside the Shroud, build a small roofed shelter, and rescue the Blacksmith as soon as practical. The Blacksmith unlocks the Glider and Grappling Hook, which transform early exploration.

This guide covers the first steps, stat choices, base placement, NPC priorities and the October 15, 2026 version 1.0 launch. Because balance and skill layouts can change at launch, verify the final patch notes before treating any build recommendation as permanent.

What is changing at Enshrouded’s 1.0 launch?
Enshrouded is scheduled to leave Early Access on Steam on October 15, 2026, according to Keen Games announcements dated June 25 and August 31, 2026. Earlier plans targeted spring 2026, while later coverage narrowed the window to fall before the exact date was announced. Secondary coverage also reports the same date for consoles, including PlayStation 5; treat those console details as medium-confidence until the platform announcements are confirmed directly.
The date matters for a beginner because skill balance, available quests and progression requirements can change with the 1.0 patch. The advice below describes the systems and priorities established before launch. Read the 1.0 patch notes after updating, particularly if a skill tree, NPC unlock or recipe behaves differently from the descriptions here.

Enshrouded classes explained: there are no locked roles
Enshrouded does not force a Warrior, Mage or Ranger choice at character creation. Skill points earned through levelling and quests can be allocated freely, allowing one character to move between melee, ranged and magic approaches. The practical decision is where to invest first, not which permanent class to select.
The six core stats
| Stat | Primary effect | Useful when you want to |
|---|---|---|
| Strength | Increases melee damage | Fight at close range with weapons that scale from physical power. |
| Intelligence | Increases magic damage and supports Water Aura | Build around spells and magical effects. |
| Dexterity | Increases ranged damage | Attack from distance with a bow or other ranged option. |
| Constitution | Increases maximum health | Survive mistakes and absorb more damage. |
| Endurance | Increases stamina | Run, climb, evade or perform other stamina-heavy actions for longer. |
| Spirit | Increases mana | Use abilities that consume mana more frequently. |
These stats describe trade-offs rather than separate professions. Damage-focused spending can make fights shorter, while Constitution and Endurance provide a larger margin for error. Intelligence and Spirit serve different needs for a magic build: Intelligence improves magical damage and Water Aura, whereas Spirit increases the mana pool that lets you cast more often. A character can mix these priorities instead of following a single tree.
Archetypes are labels, not restrictions
Secondary guides commonly group skills into four broad archetypes: Mage, Ranger, Warrior and Survivor. One guide counts 50 Mage skills, 53 Ranger skills, 45 Warrior skills and 13 Survivor skills. Those numbers are not an official promise that the 1.0 tree will be identical; skill counts and placement should be checked against the launch patch.
Use the labels to describe a play pattern, not to decide whether your character is permanently locked into it. A Warrior-style opening can spend early points on Strength, Constitution and Endurance. A Mage-style opening can emphasize Intelligence and Spirit. A Ranger-style opening can prioritize Dexterity while retaining enough survivability to handle close encounters. Survivor skills are the smaller utility-oriented grouping in the guide that lists them, rather than a mandatory fourth class.
Which build is best for a new player?
There is no reliable consensus. One guide calls Warrior an excellent beginner archetype while recommending that players start with Mage; another calls a Sword-and-Board Warrior the forgiving choice and describes Ranger as the safest opener but the weakest in caves. Those recommendations conflict because they value different things: melee durability, ranged safety, cave performance or the challenge of managing magic. Treat them as play-style opinions, not an official ranking.
| If your priority is… | Start by emphasizing… | Trade-off to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Forgiving close combat | Warrior-style skills, with Strength, Constitution and Endurance | You must remain near enemies, and ranged or magical damage will develop more slowly. |
| Maximum distance | Dexterity and a Ranger-style setup | One guide describes Ranger as weaker in caves, where cramped spaces reduce the value of distance. |
| Spell damage | Intelligence and Spirit | Magic requires more deliberate mana management and can feel less forgiving while you are learning encounters. |
| General survival | Constitution and Endurance before specializing | You gain resilience and stamina but delay peak damage. |
For a first character, choose the weapon range and risk level you actually enjoy, then keep a few early points for survivability. Because the game does not lock the class, experimenting is safer than trying to predict a universally “best” build from pre-1.0 guides.

Your first steps in Enshrouded
-
Gather enough basic material to craft tools
Collect wood and stone immediately. Your first milestone is a Stone Axe, which costs 5 Wood and 5 Stone. Craft a Stone Pickaxe as well; its exact material requirement should be read from the current crafting recipe, since requirements can be adjusted by a patch.
-
Find flat ground outside the Shroud
Look for a level site near ordinary resources and close enough to the Shroud edge that you can reach quests and fog-covered areas without a long commute. Do not put the altar inside the fog. The first altar creates a safe zone, but it is not a reason to establish your permanent base in deadly Shroud terrain.
-
Place the first Flame Altar
The first Flame Altar costs 5 Stone. Place it on the clear, flat site you selected. It establishes your initial safe working area and becomes the anchor for your early base and travel planning.
-
Build a small enclosed shelter
Put a roof and walls over a compact living area within the altar’s safe zone. A roofed, enclosed shelter grants the Rested buff while you are inside. You do not need a grand building at this stage; protection, a usable work area and room to expand are more valuable than decoration.

Explore the nearby edge, then return before overextending
Use the clear area around the altar to collect additional materials and identify routes toward the Shroud. Keep the base outside the fog so a failed expedition does not leave your crafting and storage area in the hazardous zone.
-
Strengthen the Flame Altar when the game allows it
Altar upgrades improve character power, increase the time you can spend in the Shroud and grant more fast-travel points. These benefits make strengthening the altar a progression priority rather than a cosmetic project. Upgrade requirements and the exact number of available altars can change; one guide reports that two Flame Altars can be built and expanded through upgrades, so verify that limit in the 1.0 interface.
Where to build your first base
The best starter location balances three needs: a safe place to live, access to ordinary resources and a short route to the Shroud. No single landmark is required. Select a site that satisfies the following checks before committing your altar.
- Flat, Shroud-free ground: A level surface makes a shelter easier to build and keeps your home outside the deadly fog.
- Near useful resources: You should be able to gather wood, stone and other early materials without spending every trip travelling.
- Near the Shroud edge: Quests and important resources require access to Shroud areas, so building far away creates unnecessary travel.
- Room for expansion: Leave space around the first shelter for crafting, storage and future NPC facilities.
- Fast-travel potential: As the altar is strengthened and more fast-travel points become available, a centrally positioned base can reduce repeated journeys.
A practical placement test
- Stand on the proposed site and confirm that the ground is outside the fog.
- Walk toward the nearest resource-rich area and then toward the Shroud edge. If either trip is excessively long, keep scouting.
- Place the altar only after checking that the surrounding space is level enough for a roofed room and later expansion.
- Build the shelter immediately so the Rested buff is available whenever you return.
Do not confuse proximity with safety. A base directly inside the fog may appear convenient for quests, but it removes the safe staging area that makes early exploration manageable.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Rescue the Blacksmith first
The Blacksmith is the most valuable early NPC priority because rescuing him unlocks the Glider and Grappling Hook, the two major early mobility tools. They change how you cross gaps, reach elevated routes and move between objectives, so delaying the rescue can make every other trip slower.
Once the Blacksmith is safe, a separate early-game checklist identifies four other critical NPCs: the Alchemist, Farmer, Carpenter and Hunter. Their order can depend on the quests and resources you encounter, but they represent the next group to seek after establishing the altar and securing the Blacksmith. Keep your base accessible to the NPCs you rescue so their unlocked services contribute to the same developing hub.
Managing Shroud trips without losing your opening
The Shroud is not something to ignore: quests and resources lead you into it. The mistake is treating it as a place for your permanent home before you have a safe staging area. Keep the Flame Altar and shelter on clear ground, then make deliberate excursions into the fog.
- Use the altar’s safe zone as your departure and recovery point.
- Strengthen the altar to improve the time available in the Shroud before longer expeditions.
- Return to the roofed shelter when you need the Rested buff.
- Prioritize routes that advance a quest or obtain a resource you cannot reasonably gather outside the fog.
- After unlocking the Glider and Grappling Hook, revisit routes that were previously too slow or dangerous; mobility is one of the Blacksmith’s most consequential rewards.
Common beginner mistakes and fixes
Choosing a “class” before understanding the system
Problem: You assume Mage, Ranger or Warrior is permanent and delay spending points while searching for the perfect answer.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix: Treat those names as archetypes. Start with the stat that matches your preferred range, then add Constitution or Endurance if survival is the issue. The game’s free allocation system is designed for experimentation.
Putting the altar in the Shroud
Problem: The location is close to fog resources but does not provide a dependable safe zone.
Fix: Relocate your search to flat, Shroud-free ground near the edge. Keep the base clear and travel into the fog from there.

Problem: You spend the opening on a large structure and remain without the Rested buff.
Fix: Finish a small roofed, enclosed room first. Expand after your altar, crafting needs and NPC facilities are established.
Ignoring altar upgrades
Problem: You treat the Flame Altar as a one-time placement and overlook its progression benefits.
Fix: Strengthen it when requirements are available. The upgrade path improves character power, Shroud time and fast-travel access.
Delaying the Blacksmith
Problem: You pursue optional construction while travelling on foot through routes that mobility tools would simplify.
Fix: Make the Blacksmith an early rescue objective. The Glider and Grappling Hook provide more practical value to exploration than a larger first building.
A first-session checklist
- Craft the Stone Axe with 5 Wood and 5 Stone.
- Craft a Stone Pickaxe using the recipe shown in the current crafting menu.
- Find flat ground outside the Shroud and close to resources.
- Place the first Flame Altar for 5 Stone.
- Build a roofed, enclosed shelter for the Rested buff.
- Spend initial skill points according to your preferred combat range, adding survivability if needed.
- Strengthen the altar as soon as its upgrade requirements are met.
- Rescue the Blacksmith for the Glider and Grappling Hook.
- Continue toward the Alchemist, Farmer, Carpenter and Hunter.
- Check the 1.0 patch notes after October 15, 2026 before relying on pre-launch skill counts or balance advice.
What to remember before you start
Your opening decisions are important because they determine how quickly you gain a safe base and useful mobility, but they are not an irreversible class selection. The reliable sequence is to establish the Flame Altar outside the Shroud, create a roofed shelter, improve the altar, and rescue the Blacksmith. Spend points around the six stats according to the way you want to fight, then adjust as you learn which situations—especially caves, open terrain or Shroud expeditions—challenge your build. The October 15, 2026 1.0 release may revise details, so use the launch notes as the final authority on skill layout and balance.
