As of October 8, 2026, Enshrouded is still in Early Access, and this guide reflects Update 8: Forging the Path. Steam 1.0 is announced for October 15, 2026, so check the current journal and skill descriptions—and revisit this advice after launch if you start then. For a first session, follow the opening objectives, set up a convenient base above the Shroud, rescue Survivors to unlock useful crafting services, and make early traversal tools a priority.
What kind of game is Enshrouded?
Enshrouded is a survival Action RPG set in a hand-crafted world. Its main loop links exploration, combat, survival in the Shroud, crafting, quests, and voxel building. You venture out to find resources and important locations, bring new capabilities back to your base, and use improved gear and skills to reach more challenging areas. Keen Games’ overview describes the game and its central systems.
It is more useful to think in terms of a flexible playstyle than a fixed beginner class. Combat preferences matter, but exploration and crafting progression also shape what you can do. Read the skill descriptions in your current game and choose abilities that support how you want to fight.
A practical route through your first sessions
This is a flexible route, not a mandatory quest order or speedrun. Follow the opening tutorial and journal objectives first; they introduce the basic systems and give you reasons to gather materials as you go.
#1 Best Overall
- Follow the tutorial and journal. Use the early objectives to learn crafting and orient yourself. If you are unsure what to do next, check the journal rather than trying to follow a memorized route.
- Place a convenient early Flame Altar. Look for accessible ground above the Shroud, near the routes you expect to explore. A first base does not need to be your permanent home: the community Getting Started route recommends prioritizing convenience and expanding or establishing another site as you learn the map.
- Rescue Survivors and complete their quests. Specialist craftspeople add practical services and unlock further crafting progression. A community route highlights the Blacksmith, Alchemist, Hunter, Carpenter, and Farmer as foundational rescues; treat that as a useful set of priorities, not a required order.
- Work toward traversal tools. The Grappling Hook and Glider are useful early milestones because they make routes and travel more manageable. Follow your current journal for their unlock requirements; those can depend on the build and your progress.
- Prepare before longer expeditions. Bring tools, a ranged option, healing supplies, and room in your inventory. At base, a roofed resting area, storage, a workbench, and space for Survivor stations make it easier to set out and return with what you find. These are practical community-guide recommendations, not official entry requirements.
- Strengthen your character and Flame as you progress. Explore key sites, improve gear and skills, and use Flame progression to reach tougher areas. The loop is connected: exploration supports crafting and preparation, while better capabilities help you explore farther.
Which Survivors should you rescue first?
Survivors are more than characters to find: their specialist services and quests help open crafting pathways. One community starter route identifies these five as foundational, but your immediate needs and discoveries can determine the order that feels most useful.
| Survivor | Why they matter early |
|---|---|
| Blacksmith | Supports metalworking and gear progression. |
| Alchemist | Supports alchemy progression. |
| Hunter | Supports leather-related crafting progression. |
| Carpenter | Supports woodworking progression. |
| Farmer | Supports farming and cooking progression. |
The associations above summarize the community starter route; follow the in-game quests and recipes for the specific services available in your build.
How should you choose and set up a first base?
Choose for convenience, not perfection. A useful first site is on accessible ground above the Shroud, with reasonable access to the areas you plan to explore and enough room for a simple resting and crafting setup. The community starter guide describes Flame Altars as fast-travel points and recommends a practical first location; check what the current game shows as you place and use one.
Rank #2
- Make room for a roofed resting area and a workbench.
- Add storage so supplies and expedition finds do not have to remain in your carried inventory.
- Leave space for the stations used by rescued Survivors.
- Prefer a location that makes your next objectives easier to reach; expand or establish another base later if your needs change.
Recipes, costs, and exact base mechanics can vary with progression. Use the current in-game crafting and building interfaces rather than relying on a precise cost or recipe from an older guide.

Choose around a primary playstyle—such as how you prefer to fight—and read the descriptions in the current skill tree before committing. There is no universal beginner build established by the available guidance, and copying a specific sequence can be a poor fit if it does not match your preferred approach.
This version caveat is especially relevant after Update 8. Keen Games’ April 14, 2026 announcement described changes to gear, progression, and the skill tree; the official major updates archive lists Forging the Path as live on April 21, 2026. A community Update 8 guide also reports that saved skill trees were reset. Treat older skill orders as provisional and use the descriptions your game displays.
Rank #3
What should returning or new players know about the version?
This guide is specifically for the Early Access Update 8 baseline as of October 8, 2026—not a post-launch 1.0 walkthrough. Keen Games’ June 25, 2026 release announcement says: “Enshrouded releases out of Early Access on Steam on October 15th!” That announcement confirms Steam timing; it does not establish the same date for other platforms. If you begin after October 15, check the live release notes and in-game journal, since changes in 1.0 may affect progression advice.
The official update history also shows Wake of the Water as a preceding major update in November 2025, followed by Forging the Path in April 2026. Version context matters when comparing older guides: exact stat values, altar costs, recipes, and skill routes may not match what your game currently presents.
Quick Recap
Common beginner mistakes to avoid
- Trying to plan a permanent base immediately: a convenient first site is enough while you learn the map.
- Ignoring Survivor quests: rescues connect exploration to specialist services and crafting progression.
- Leaving traversal tools until much later: keep the Grappling Hook and Glider on your early objective list, using the journal for current requirements.
- Copying an old build point for point: Update 8 changed progression and the skill tree, so check current descriptions instead.
- Setting out without space or supplies: inventory room, healing, tools, and a ranged option make expeditions easier to manage.
- Treating a community route as mandatory: guides are helpful starting points, but the journal and the needs of your own run should guide the order.
