The altar is both your permanent base anchor and the place where progression is managed, but its local Altar Level is not the same thing as your world-wide Flame Level. Altar upgrades enlarge one building area; Flame upgrades improve your character, survival time, base capacity, crafting access and route through the world.
Understanding that split prevents the most expensive progression mistake in Enshrouded: spending Shroud materials to enlarge a base when you actually need a Flame-strengthening sacrifice to open the next region.

What the Flame Altar does
A claimed Flame Altar establishes a permanent building area. It keeps the protected space clear of Shroud, provides a fast-travel destination and supplies the altar’s heat function. All altar-specific construction upgrades and global Flame-strengthening actions are performed there.
The protected area also has a water-management action. The in-game action text reproduced by the Official Enshrouded Wiki says it “will remove all simulated water currently within this Flame-protected area.” Treat that as a destructive cleanup option: use it only when you are sure a water feature inside the protected area is unwanted.

One character can operate several altars, but each altar has its own construction volume. Flame progression, by contrast, is shared globally. Moving to a new base does not reset your Flame Level, and upgrading one altar does not make every other altar larger.
How to craft your first Flame Altar
Prerequisite
Accept the Claim a Spot For Your Base quest. The quest unlocks the relevant Manual Crafting recipe; without accepting it, the altar recipe is not available even if you already have stone.
Materials
- Stone ×5, using any stone type accepted by Manual Crafting.
Crafting steps
- Accept Claim a Spot For Your Base.
- Open Manual Crafting.
- Select Flame Altar.
- Confirm the recipe after checking that your inventory contains five units of stone.
- Place the altar at the site you want to claim. Placement creates the protected building area and the fast-travel anchor.
The recipe is deliberately inexpensive because the altar is the foundation of the rest of the game’s progression. Save rare Shroud materials for later altar-volume upgrades and Flame sacrifices rather than delaying your first claim.
Altar Level: expanding one build area
Every altar begins with a 40×40×40 build cube. Altar Level applies only to that specific altar, so a workshop base can be enlarged without changing the construction limits at a distant outpost. The Official Enshrouded Wiki’s 2026 progression figures are:

These dimensions describe a cube, not a flat square footprint. Increasing from 40 to 80 on each axis increases usable volume in every direction, which matters for towers, underground rooms and multi-level workshops as much as it does for floor area.

Shroud Cores and Shroud Nexuses are the local-upgrade currency. They do not raise Flame Level, add attribute points, increase your Shroud timer or unlock a region. If a new passage remains closed after you enlarge an altar, nothing has gone wrong: you performed the local track rather than the global one.
Flame Level: progression shared by the whole world
Strengthen the Flame is the global track. The cited 2026 progression table covers Flame Levels 1 through 11, which means ten strengthening steps. Level 1 is the starting state; each step after that is a world-progression gate.
From Flame Level 2 onward, every completed level grants an attribute point. The same global upgrades increase maximum Shroud time, raise the permitted number of Flame Altars and water sources, and open the relevant region or Shroud passage. Flame Level therefore affects exploration and character power even when you are not building at the altar where you perform the upgrade.

The most useful diagnostic question is simple: are you trying to fit more structures inside one claimed area, or are you trying to survive longer and enter the next region? The first answer points to Altar Level; the second points to Flame Level.
What a Flame-strengthening step requires
Each global step combines several types of progression rather than asking for one universal currency. The published progression data uses regional materials, Sparks and a corresponding boss trophy, with survivor requirements on some rows. Because the materials change by level, gather for the next listed sacrifice instead of stockpiling only one resource.

Flame 1→2
The published row lists Resin ×5, Penny Bun ×5, Bones ×5, Shroud Liquid ×5, Spark ×5 and Animal Fur ×5. Confirm the row’s trophy or survivor column at the altar before travelling; the material bundle is only one part of the global gate.
Flame 2→3
The example bundle is Wax ×10, Salt ×10, Spark ×5, Shroud Wood ×10, Flintstone ×10 and Mycelium ×25, together with the corresponding boss-trophy requirement shown in the progression data.
Flame 3→4
The listed materials are Goo ×15, Corrupted Boar Tusk ×15, Spark ×10, Indigo Plant ×15, Amber ×15 and Copper Ore ×15, again paired with the row’s specified boss trophy.
Later rows continue the same pattern with different regional resources and may add a named survivor requirement. Do not assume that a material from an earlier tier remains valid for the next sacrifice, and do not treat a Spark as a substitute for a trophy or survivor: they occupy different requirement categories.

The practical progression loop
Flame progression is designed as a loop between the altar and the world, not as a menu-only upgrade. Use this order when preparing for the next level:

- Read the next Flame row at the altar. Record every material, the Spark count, the boss trophy and any survivor condition before leaving your base.
- Open the next route through exploration. The current Flame Level determines which region or Shroud passage is available. Explore within your present limits rather than assuming a local Altar Level upgrade will open the route.
- Recruit or satisfy the required survivor. Some levels specify a survivor requirement. If that condition is missing, collecting the other materials will not complete the strengthening action.
- Gather the regional bundle. Collect the exact plants, minerals, creature drops, wood products and Shroud items named by the row. Keep the items in storage near the altar so you can identify what is still missing.
- Defeat the associated boss. The boss trophy is a separate gate from ordinary drops. Carrying the listed materials without the trophy leaves the upgrade unavailable.
- Return to any Flame Altar and choose Strengthen the Flame. Because the track is global, you can perform the action at the altar that is safest or most convenient; it does not need to be the altar where you built your main house.
- Spend the new level’s benefits immediately. Recheck your attribute point, Shroud-time limit, altar and water-source limits, newly opened route and available crafting recipes before planning the next expedition.
How Flame Level changes crafting
Flame Level is one part of a broader recipe system. Crafting recipes expand through exploration, rescued or recruited survivors, workshops and Flame progression. A higher Flame Level does not replace those other unlock paths: a recipe can still require the correct survivor or workshop even after the Flame requirement has been met.
Keen Games’ official update announcement for the Cinder’s Cradle progression states: “Before entering the Cinder’s Cradle, the next Flame Level is waiting to be unlocked – which in turn will raise the maximum of Flame Altars to 15.” That wording identifies the Flame upgrade as the gate before entering that content and confirms that the announced level raises the global altar cap to 15.

Armor sets for the following crafting tier unlock automatically when the Flame is upgraded. In practical terms, strengthen the Flame before judging a workshop or survivor as missing a recipe: the tier may be waiting on the global level rather than on another local building upgrade.
Planning several Flame Altars
The global altar limit increases with Flame Level, while each altar’s build cube is upgraded separately. This creates a trade-off between a few large bases and many specialized outposts.
- Use a large local level for a main settlement. Spend Shroud Cores and Nexuses on the altar where you need the 120×120×120 or 160×160×160 volume.
- Keep travel outposts economical. A new altar still provides its protected area and fast-travel destination at 40×40×40; enlarge it only if you need construction space there.
- Use global levels to add capacity. If you have reached the current altar-count limit, the remedy is a Flame-strengthening step, not another local cube upgrade.
- Plan water sources globally. The number allowed rises with Flame progression, whereas the simulated-water removal action affects only the protected area of the altar where it is used.
Common mistakes and fixes
Expecting a bigger house to unlock a region
Symptom: You upgraded an altar but a Shroud passage or region remains closed. Fix: Check the Strengthen the Flame requirements, including the boss trophy and any survivor condition. Local cube size has no effect on world gates.

Arriving at the altar without the complete sacrifice
Symptom: The strengthen action is visible but cannot be confirmed. Fix: Compare your inventory with the next progression row one item at a time. Sparks, regional materials, trophies and survivor conditions are separate checks.
Assuming every altar shares the largest build cube
Symptom: A new outpost has less construction space than your main base. Fix: Upgrade that specific altar. The 80×80×80, 120×120×120 and 160×160×160 milestones are local.
Ignoring the new attribute point
Symptom: You strengthened the Flame but your character feels unchanged. Fix: Open the character interface and spend the attribute point granted from Flame Level 2 onward. The point is not automatically assigned to a build.
Removing water accidentally
Symptom: A pool or irrigation feature disappears inside the protected area. Fix: Treat the altar’s simulated-water action as irreversible cleanup for that area and rebuild only after deciding that the water is unwanted.
