Enshrouded supports online co-op for groups of up to 16 people, plus solo and offline play. At the Steam 1.0 launch on October 15, 2026, cross-platform play was not available. Keen Games says it is working on cross-play but has not provided an estimated release date, so a PC player cannot currently join a PlayStation friend in the same session.

Does Enshrouded have cross-play?

No. Cross-platform play was unavailable when Enshrouded 1.0 launched on Steam on October 15, 2026. A launch FAQ published by Keen Games on October 13, 2026 states that the team is working on cross-platform play but has no current estimate for when it will arrive.

That means players on different platform ecosystems should not buy the game expecting to share a world immediately. A PC player and a PlayStation player cannot currently join one another’s Enshrouded session through an official cross-play feature. The absence of an estimated date also means that no specific update, season or console milestone can be promised.

“Enshrouded will not be cross-platform at launch, but we know many of your friendships have survived years of console wars. We are working on bringing cross-platform play to Enshrouded, but have no current estimate on how much time it will take us.”

— Keen Games launch FAQ, October 13, 2026

What “no cross-play” means in practice

  • Players using the same supported platform can play together through the game’s normal multiplayer systems.
  • PC and PlayStation players cannot combine in one online world at the 1.0 launch.
  • A dedicated server does not bypass the platform restriction. Server persistence and cross-platform compatibility are separate issues.
  • Do not treat community workarounds, remote-play arrangements or future announcements as an existing cross-play feature.

How many people can play Enshrouded together?

Keen Games describes Enshrouded as a cooperative online multiplayer game and says players can set out with up to 16 people. The same official FAQ confirms that the game can also be played solo and offline.

“Up to 16” is the player-cap guidance published by the developer. It does not establish how many slots a particular third-party server package includes, whether every activity is balanced for a full group, or what performance a home connection will deliver. If you rent a server, check that provider’s current slot limit and region rather than assuming every plan supports 16 simultaneous players.

Available ways to play

Mode Who must be online? World availability Best use
Solo Only you Available for your own play Exploring, building or progressing without a group
Offline No online group required Available while playing offline Playing without an internet session
Normal co-op host The host needs to run the session Friends join while that host session is available A regular group that plays at the same times
Dedicated server The server process, not the original host, stays online The world can remain available when the original host is away Groups with different schedules or a persistent shared world

Can you play without a dedicated server?

Yes. Enshrouded supports ordinary co-op hosting, so one player can start a multiplayer session and invite friends. A dedicated server is optional; its main advantage is persistence. Keen Games says a dedicated server can be configured so players do not need the original host to be online.

Choose ordinary hosting when your group normally plays together and you want the least setup. Choose dedicated hosting when members play at different times, want the world available every day, or need an administrator other than the person who first created the session.

Normal host session versus dedicated server

Consideration Normal co-op host Rented or self-hosted dedicated server
Host availability The host must start and maintain the multiplayer session. The server can remain online without the original host.
Cost No dedicated-server rental is required; any ordinary game ownership or connection costs still apply. Self-hosting uses your own machine and connection; a rental normally creates a recurring charge set by the provider.
Setup Start a world and invite friends. Install and configure the supplied server executable, or configure a provider’s rental.
Save and world management The host’s world and save remain central to the session. The dedicated server maintains the persistent world; transfer and backup procedures depend on how you host it.
Player slots The developer describes groups of up to 16 people. Provider-specific slot limits are not stated by Keen Games and must be checked before purchase.
Region and latency Connection quality depends largely on the host’s location and upload capacity. You select a server location when the provider offers regions; the resulting latency depends on that location and each player’s route.
Backups and administration Managed by the host’s local files and routine. Backup schedules, file access, moderation tools and support vary by provider or by your own server setup.
Platform compatibility Cross-platform play was unavailable at 1.0 launch. A dedicated server does not remove that launch platform restriction.

How to set up an Enshrouded dedicated server

There are two supported approaches: run the dedicated-server software yourself or rent a managed server. Keen Games names GPortal as an in-game rental partner and says other providers can also be used. Provider features, prices, regions, backups, modifications, support and slot counts change over time, so verify those details directly before committing.

Self-host with the Steam Tools installation

Keen Games’ dedicated-server installation article, published February 23, 2024, says the dedicated-server executable is bundled with the Steam title. It becomes available in Steam’s Tools section after the game has been purchased and unlocked.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Purchase and unlock the Steam version of Enshrouded.
  2. Open the Steam library and enable the Tools category or filter.
  3. Locate the Enshrouded dedicated-server tool and install it.
  4. Use the supplied server files and configuration instructions to create the world and set its access details.
  5. Keep the server process running on a machine with a stable connection whenever friends need access.
  6. Give your group the server’s connection information and use the game’s supported invitation or joining flow.

The official installation guidance establishes where to obtain the executable, but it does not make one set of port-forwarding values universal for every router, operating system or network. Do not copy an arbitrary port number from an unrelated guide without checking the current Keen Games support documentation and your network setup.

Rent a managed server

A rental removes much of the machine maintenance from the owner. The game identifies GPortal as an in-game rental partner, while also allowing other providers. Compare a rental by the factors that affect your group rather than by headline price alone:

  • Number of simultaneous player slots, and whether the slot count can be changed later.
  • Data-center region and expected latency for the majority of your players.
  • Automated backups, restore points and access to world-save files.
  • Restart controls, scheduled maintenance and crash recovery.
  • Administrative permissions and the ability to control passwords or access lists.
  • Support response times and the provider’s policy for game-version updates.
  • Whether the service supports the platform combination your group actually uses; a rental cannot create cross-play that the game itself does not provide.

How do I join a friend’s Enshrouded game?

For a normal co-op session, have the host start the world, then invite the other players through the game’s available multiplayer flow. Keen Games’ network troubleshooting guidance specifically recommends using the Steam Friend list when friends cannot find or join a hosted game.

  1. Confirm that the host has started the intended world and that the joining player is using the same supported platform ecosystem.
  2. Ask the host to open the Steam Friend list and send an invitation directly to the friend rather than relying only on an in-game search.
  3. Accept the invitation while Steam is running and allow the game to open the session.
  4. If the invitation fails, repeat the attempt after both players restart Steam and the game, then test whether another friend can join.

Dedicated-server joining is different: the server must be running, and players use the server’s advertised name or connection details. The server owner should confirm that the world is online and that access controls have not changed.

What to do when friends cannot join

Keen Games says Enshrouded multiplayer currently uses IPv4. If a hosted game is invisible or an invitation produces a connection failure, work through the checks below in order.

1. Try a Steam Friend-list invite

The official troubleshooting article recommends inviting through the Steam Friend list. This is the first low-effort test for an ordinary host session because it avoids relying on a stale or incomplete in-game listing.

2. Confirm IPv4 reachability

Both the host and joining players need a network path that can reach the session over IPv4. Corporate, campus and some mobile networks may restrict inbound or peer-to-peer traffic. Check the router, firewall and internet service configuration rather than assuming that an IPv6-only path will work.

3. Separate a host problem from a client problem

  • Have another friend attempt to join. If everyone fails, investigate the host’s network or session.
  • If only one person fails, compare that player’s firewall, VPN, router and network restrictions with a player who can connect.
  • Restart the game and Steam on both sides after changing a firewall or network setting.

4. Avoid unverified universal port instructions

Keen Games’ support guidance points players to its dedicated-server troubleshooting section, but the available official information does not establish one universal port-forwarding recipe for every setup. Use the current instructions for your exact server method and network, and do not expose unnecessary services to the internet.

Do Early Access owners need to buy Enshrouded again for 1.0?

No, not for the PC version. Keen Games’ October 13, 2026 launch FAQ says owners of the Early Access PC version do not need to purchase the game again for 1.0.

The same FAQ says Early Access saves can be used after conversion to the newer save format. Make a separate backup of important world files before conversion, especially if you are moving from a local host to a dedicated server, because save transfer procedures and file locations differ between hosting methods.

Planning a multiplayer group

Decide on the hosting model before everyone starts building in the same world. The following checklist avoids the most common expectation mismatch:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Keep the group within the developer’s stated limit of up to 16 players.
  • Confirm that every participant is on a platform that can currently play with the others; cross-platform play was not available at launch.
  • Choose a normal host session if schedules overlap, or a dedicated server if the world must remain available while the original host is offline.
  • For self-hosting, install the dedicated-server tool from Steam’s Tools section and plan who will maintain the machine.
  • For rentals, verify slots, region, backups, recurring price and support before ordering.
  • Agree on who owns the world files and how backups will be made before transferring a save.
  • Test one friend joining before organizing a full 16-player session.

Bottom line on Enshrouded multiplayer

Enshrouded is built for cooperative groups of up to 16, while still supporting solo and offline play. Ordinary co-op is the simplest option, and a dedicated server keeps a world available when its original host is away. At the October 15, 2026 Steam 1.0 launch, PC and PlayStation players could not play together through cross-play; Keen Games is working on that feature but has supplied no ETA. For connection problems, start with a Steam Friend-list invitation and verify IPv4 reachability before changing advanced network settings.
