What server administration actually supports
The practical control model is role-based rather than command-based. A dedicated server reads groups from the userGroups section of enshrouded_server.json. Each group has a name, a password and five permission fields. When a player joins, the password they enter determines which group permissions they receive.

You create or edit a group, assign its password, restart the server if necessary, and use that password when connecting. The permissions attached to the group then govern what appears in the in-game interface.
Community guides commonly describe groups named Admin, Friend and Guest, while other installations show a single default group. Names are configuration values, not a guaranteed universal set, so inspect the file generated by your own server before changing anything.

How to become an admin on an Enshrouded server
1. Stop the server and locate the configuration
Use your host’s file manager or the dedicated-server installation directory to find enshrouded_server.json. The exact path differs between a self-hosted installation and a hosting panel. Stop the server before editing so it cannot rewrite the file while you are saving it.
2. Make a backup
Copy the JSON file to a separate location and keep the original filename available for rollback. A malformed comma, quote or bracket can prevent the server from loading its settings, so a known-good backup is the fastest recovery.

3. Edit the target group under userGroups
Open the userGroups object or array and identify the group that should receive administrative permissions. Set that group’s password to a long, unique value. Preserve the existing JSON structure and all permission fields; do not delete fields simply because you do not recognize them.
Some community posts claim that the password must contain the group name. That requirement is anecdotal and unverified, so do not rely on it. A normal password that matches the group’s configured value is the supported approach described by current guides.

4. Save valid JSON and restart
Validate the file with a JSON-aware editor if your host does not provide validation. Start the server after saving. A restart is also the safest way to ensure the process has loaded the new role data rather than retaining an earlier in-memory configuration.
5. Join with the role password
At the connection prompt, enter the password assigned to the desired group. The server uses that password to select the role. Give ordinary players the password for a limited group, not the administrative group, and change the administrative password immediately if it has been shared accidentally.

Open the in-game player list and select a connected player. An administrative role with the relevant permission should expose moderation controls. If those controls are absent, reconnect with the correct password and confirm that the server actually loaded the edited file.
Understanding the role permissions
Current community documentation describes five permission fields on each user group. The only permission consistently identified in the available material is canKickBan. The names and behavior of the other four fields are not established well enough to reproduce as a definitive list, and they may vary with the server version. Keep every field present in the file and use the labels shown by your installation rather than replacing them with a copied template.

How to kick or ban a player
Kick
Connect with a role that has canKickBan, open the in-game player list, select the offending player and choose the kick control. This is an interface action, not a server-console command. The player is removed from the current session and can generally attempt to reconnect unless another restriction applies.
Ban
Use the same player-list workflow and choose the ban action or ban widget presented by the game. Community reports say the ban is written back to the server configuration, so stop making manual edits while the game is recording the change and take a backup afterward.
The configuration key holding bans is disputed. One set of guides calls it bannedAccounts; another calls it bans. Because the exact key has not been verified, do not paste either name into a new file or delete an unfamiliar array blindly. If you must inspect a ban entry, preserve the original file and compare a before-and-after backup made around an in-game ban.
Unban
No dependable unban command is documented. A slash-command guide lists /unban, but other current sources report that no chat command system exists. Treat that command as unverified. Use any unban control your installed game version visibly provides; otherwise restore a known-good configuration only after confirming which ban array your own server generated.

Enshrouded console commands, chat commands and RCON
Several 2026 dedicated-server guides report that the server process has no developer console for administrators, the server window does not accept command input, and no RCON listener is exposed. In practical terms, typing commands into the server window or trying to connect with an RCON client is not a supported administration path.
One outlier guide, attributed to PingPlayers, lists /kick, /ban, /unban and /serverstatus. Other 2026 sources contradict that list, and no independent confirmation establishes that those commands work on current servers. Do not build moderation procedures, bots or hosting-panel automations around them. Verify any slash command in a disposable test world after an update before allowing moderators to depend on it.

Reserved slots: what is and is not known
Community reports describe reserved slots as a way to hold seats for a group so its members can join when the server appears full. The behavior is not consistently documented, and reports conflict over whether a value greater than zero is required before the feature activates.
Treat reserved-slot settings as version-sensitive. Make a backup, change only one value, restart the server and test with a full or nearly full session. If the server rejects the setting or ordinary players are unexpectedly blocked, restore the backup. Do not promise a specific slot count or configuration key to players until your own build demonstrates it.

Hosting panels and persistence
A hand-edited password can revert when a hosting panel regenerates enshrouded_server.json at boot. If your role works once and disappears after a restart, check the panel’s server-settings or configuration editor and set the group password there instead of editing only the file on disk.
Keep a copy of the intended group layout outside the panel. After every game or panel update, compare the live file with that copy, confirm that userGroups still exists and reconnect using the role password. Never assume that a successful save in a web panel means the dedicated-server process has loaded the change; a controlled restart and in-game verification are required.

Related server settings and restart requirements
Difficulty and rate controls are reported under the gameSettings section of the same configuration file. Community guidance says these values require a server restart, but confidence in the exact behavior is lower than for role passwords and moderation. Change them during a maintenance window, record the previous values and verify the result in a test session before applying a major change to an established world.
The configuration is normally generated on the first server run. A Steam update may leave an older file in place rather than refreshing it. In one community case, reinstalling the server files resolved a stale configuration problem. Reinstall only after backing up the world, saves and configuration, and use it as recovery for a file-version problem rather than as a first response to a mistyped password.
Troubleshooting checklist
The password does not grant admin controls
- Confirm that you edited the active server’s
enshrouded_server.json, not a local client or an old backup. - Check that the password is under the intended group in
userGroupsand that the JSON remains valid. - Stop and restart the server, then reconnect instead of relying on an existing session.
- Verify that the group includes
canKickBanif moderation controls are the feature you need. - Check the hosting panel for a boot-time template that replaced your edit.
The moderation buttons are missing
- Reconnect with the administrative group password; joining with a Friend or Guest password will not inherit admin permissions.
- Test against a player who is currently online, because the controls are exposed through the player list.
- Confirm that the server process loaded the edited file after its latest restart.
A ban does not persist or cannot be reversed
- Back up the configuration immediately after using the in-game ban widget.
- Compare the file before and after the action to identify the array your version actually writes.
- Do not substitute
bannedAccountsforbans, or vice versa, without evidence from your own generated file. - Do not rely on
/unbanunless a controlled test on your exact build confirms that a command parser exists.
The server fails to start after editing
- Restore the last known-good backup.
- Validate commas, braces, brackets, quotation marks and the file’s overall JSON syntax.
- Reapply one change at a time and restart after each change so the faulty value is identifiable.
Security and change-management practices
- Use a different password for each permission level; never share the administrative password in a public Discord or server message.
- Limit
canKickBanto people who actually moderate the server. - Keep dated backups before role, ban, reserved-slot or difficulty changes.
- Document who has the administrative password and rotate it when a moderator leaves.
- Test questionable features, especially slash commands and reserved slots, on a non-public instance first.
- After updates, verify role assignment, player-list controls and ban persistence before reopening the server.
What may change with the 1.0 release
Keen Games’ 1.0 release was reported as scheduled for October 15, 2026, one day after this guide’s status date. Server administration may change at launch, including the availability of commands, the names of ban arrays, role fields or reserved-slot behavior. Until post-launch documentation confirms otherwise, the role-password and in-game moderation workflow above is the least speculative path, while slash commands and exact reserved-slot keys should remain treated as unverified.
