Enshrouded’s “Version Mismatch” message means the game client and dedicated server are running incompatible builds. Update the side that is behind, let the update finish, restart the server, then relaunch the game and connect again. A server can need an update even when Steam shows no new client download, because Keen Games sometimes publishes server-only updates.

What “Version Mismatch” means in Enshrouded
Enshrouded checks the build running on your Steam client against the build reported by the dedicated server. If those builds are not compatible, the connection is rejected before you join the world. The message does not, by itself, indicate a router failure, a damaged save, or a problem with your character.

Steam may update player clients first while a rented host is still deploying the server files, or a self-hosted administrator may not have run the server update yet. The reverse can also happen if a server owner updates manually before every player has restarted Steam.
Keen Games documented this behavior in its Hotfix #11 notice in 2024. That notice identified server version number 511168 and explicitly stated that game clients did not change. Dedicated-server owners were told to download the server update or restart with their provider. The number is historical, not a current universal build identifier; do not use it as a target for a later patch.

Identify which kind of server you are running
The correct update procedure depends on where the server files live. Determine this before changing anything so you do not update a different installation from the one that actually launches your world.

If you are unsure, look at the process or panel you normally use to start the world. Do not install a second server beside the original just to test an update: that can leave you connecting to a fresh, unconfigured instance while the real server remains old.

Every player who receives the mismatch should first confirm that Steam has completed the client update. A server cannot make an outdated client compatible by itself.
- Open Steam’s Downloads view. Check whether Enshrouded is queued, paused, or still applying files. Leave Steam open until the download and installation stages finish.
- Restart Steam if no download appears. Exit Steam completely, start it again, and check Downloads once more. A client that looks current before a restart can still be waiting for Steam to refresh its state.
- Launch Enshrouded only after the update completes. Close any copy of the game that was already running during the patch, then start it again so the newly installed build is the one used for the connection.
- Clear Steam’s download cache if Steam remains stuck. Use Steam’s Settings, Downloads page, and the Clear Download Cache control documented in the official network troubleshooting guidance. Steam will restart and may require you to sign in again; allow any pending Enshrouded download to resume.
Do not infer that the server is broken merely because your client shows “up to date.” A server-only release is specifically designed to leave the client unchanged, so the next action may be on the server side.

Update a server installed from Steam’s Library
This route applies when the dedicated server was installed through the Steam client rather than through a separate command-line installation.
- Stop the running server. Use the same method you normally use to shut it down and wait for the process to exit. Updating files while the executable is still writing a save can produce an incomplete or confusing result.
- Open Steam Library and select the Tools category. Find Enshrouded Dedicated Server. The game client entry and the dedicated-server tool are separate entries; updating the game alone does not update the server files.
- Run the available update for the dedicated-server tool. Let Steam finish downloading and applying every file. Do not launch the old executable from a shortcut or an alternate folder while this is in progress.
- Start the dedicated-server executable directly. Keen Games’ official guide says the executable should be run directly. On its first launch, it creates
enshrouded_server.json; keep using the configuration belonging to this installation. - Wait for the server to finish starting. The process must reach its normal ready state before a player tests the connection. Starting the game while Steam is still updating, or while the server is still initializing, can preserve the appearance of a mismatch.
If you have more than one copy of the server tool, verify the path of the executable you launch. Updating one copy and starting another leaves the active instance on the old build even though Steam reports a successful download.
Update a self-hosted server with SteamCMD
Steam Support describes SteamCMD as the distribution method for standalone game servers. Use this procedure when your existing Enshrouded installation is maintained with SteamCMD or a script that calls it.
- Stop Enshrouded cleanly. End the server process through your normal service, script, or console method. Confirm that it is no longer running before updating.
- Run the same SteamCMD update and validation workflow used for this installation. Keep the established installation directory and server application configuration. The safe command is the one already associated with your server; do not substitute an app ID, directory, or client installation from a different setup.
- Wait for SteamCMD to report completion. A command window that is still downloading, validating, or writing files is not finished. Let it return to its normal completed state before starting the server.
- Start the existing server installation. Use the same executable and launch script as before so the server reads the correct configuration and save files.
- Check that the updated process is the one listening for connections. If you manage several instances, confirm the service name, working directory, or panel entry rather than assuming the first process you see is the updated one.
SteamCMD can validate files, but it cannot correct an administrator starting the wrong folder afterward. Preserve the existing configuration and saves, and avoid creating a new installation merely to obtain newer files.

Update a rented or managed server
Managed hosts control the server files and may deploy a patch automatically. Keen Games advises renters to wait for automatic updating or try a restart, depending on the provider.
- Check the provider panel for an update, verify, or restart control. Use the panel’s Enshrouded-specific action if one exists instead of repeatedly clicking a generic reboot button.
- Stop or restart once, then wait. A patch can be applied during the stop/start cycle. Wait until the panel reports the server online and, where available, shows current files or a completed task.
- Do not connect during deployment. Testing while the host is replacing files can create a second failure that looks like a persistent version problem.
- Contact the provider if the panel reports success but the mismatch remains. Ask the host to verify that the active instance—not merely a template or stopped container—was updated, and that it was restarted after the patch.
Provider rollout timing can explain a short-lived mismatch immediately after a Keen Games patch. If the client has completed its update and the host has not yet finished deployment, waiting for the provider’s process is more appropriate than changing local network settings.

Synchronize both sides after updating
A successful download is not the same as a synchronized running server. Use this order after either side changes:
- Finish the player’s Steam update, if one is available.
- Finish the dedicated-server update or provider deployment.
- Restart the server so the executable loads the new files.
- Close and relaunch Enshrouded on the player computer if the game was open during the update.
- Join only after the server is fully online.
This clean restart is the synchronization point. It replaces an old server process with one that has loaded the current installation and avoids testing a process that was launched before the patch.

If the mismatch remains after the restart
Work through the checks below in order. Each one tests whether the update actually reached the running installation.
Confirm that Steam finished, rather than only downloading
Return to Steam Downloads and look for a pending, paused, or failed Enshrouded task. Restart Steam and clear the download cache through Settings, Downloads if Steam is not presenting the update correctly. Then allow the client to complete before testing again.
Confirm that the server update completed
For a self-hosted installation, run the established SteamCMD update/validation workflow again and wait for completion. For a rented server, use the provider’s verify or update control and wait for the panel to finish. A restart without a completed update simply relaunches the same old files.
Confirm that you launched the updated installation
Compare the executable path or service entry you start with the location that Steam or SteamCMD updated. Multiple copies are a frequent source of confusion: the library tool can be current while a desktop shortcut still launches an older folder.

Confirm that the server restarted after the update
Updating files on disk does not change a process that is already running. Stop the server, wait for it to exit, and start it again. On a managed host, use the panel’s restart action and wait for the online status before joining.
Separate a version error from a network error
Do not begin with router changes while the builds are still different. Once the client and server are synchronized, use the official network guidance for a separate visibility or connection symptom. That guidance documents query port 15637, clearing Steam’s download cache, and the Windows command ipconfig /flushdns. Those steps address discovery or name-resolution problems; they do not replace the server update required by a genuine version mismatch.
Why publishing a “current” build number is unreliable
Enshrouded updates can change the server and client on different schedules. The documented Hotfix #11 example—server version 511168 in 2024 with no client change—shows why a number copied into a troubleshooting page can become misleading as soon as another patch ships.
Use the number only to understand that server-only releases exist. For a live incident, the dependable test is operational: Steam has finished on the player side, the server installation has finished updating, and the server has been restarted from that updated installation. If those conditions are met, the builds are being synchronized without relying on a stale number.
Self-hosting or managed hosting: what changes after a patch?
Buying managed hosting is not required to fix a mismatch. It changes who performs the maintenance and which controls are available when a patch arrives.

Choose based on control and maintenance preference, not on the assumption that managed hosting eliminates every mismatch. A provider can still be in the middle of a rollout; the practical advantage is having a panel and support path for that deployment.
A repeatable post-patch checklist
- Check Steam Downloads on every player computer.
- Restart Steam if the expected client update is not appearing.
- For a Library installation, update Enshrouded Dedicated Server under Steam Library, Tools.
- For SteamCMD, stop the server and run the existing update/validation workflow against the existing installation.
- For a rented server, wait for automatic deployment or use the provider’s update and restart controls.
- Protect the existing configuration and save files; do not switch to an unconfigured second installation.
- Wait for both update operations to finish before starting the server.
- Restart the server, then relaunch the game if it was open during patching.
- Only after the versions match, investigate query port 15637, download-cache, or DNS symptoms described in the official network guidance.
The reliable sequence is therefore: update the client when needed, update the dedicated-server installation, restart the server, and test again. If the message survives that sequence, verify that the update reached the exact installation and running process you use, then ask a managed provider to verify its active instance rather than changing unrelated network settings first.
