Assume the password is compromised. Stop using the fake store, secure the email account linked to PlayStation Network (PSN), then change your PSN sign-in method through official PlayStation Account Management. Turn on 2-step verification (2SV), save the backup codes, and inspect transactions, subscriptions, and payment methods. If your sign-in details changed or you see an unfamiliar charge, use PlayStation’s recovery tools and contact Support immediately.
First 15 minutes: contain the phishing incident
A page can copy PlayStation logos, colors, product names, and checkout screens and still be controlled by a scammer. Treat any password entered there as exposed, even if the page looked genuine and even if you did not receive an error.

Close the fake page
Do not enter another password, payment-card number, recovery code, SMS code, authenticator code, or any other account detail into the page. Do not return to it to “check” whether your account works. If you downloaded a file or browser extension from the page, stop using it and remove it only after you have secured your accounts.

Secure the email account connected to PSN
Change the email account’s password first, or do it in parallel from the email provider’s official site or app. That mailbox is usually the route used to reset a PSN password or approve a security change. Use a new password that has never been used on another service. Review the email account’s recovery address, phone number, active sessions, and forwarding rules for changes you did not make.

Open official PlayStation Account Management
Navigate there yourself using a trusted bookmark, the official PlayStation site, or the console’s account settings. Do not use a link from the suspicious message, advertisement, pop-up, or fake store. In Account Management, open Security. PlayStation lists the sign-in ID, passkey, password, mobile number, and 2-step verification settings in this area.
-
Replace the exposed PSN credential
Change the PSN password, or change the sign-in method if your account uses a passkey. Choose a long, unique password. PlayStation warns that using the same password across multiple accounts increases your risk if one account is compromised.
-
Enable 2-step verification
Choose SMS or an authenticator app in the Security settings. Complete enrollment from the official account page, not from the phishing page. Record the backup codes and keep them somewhere safe and offline. They are needed if you lose access to your phone or authenticator.

Inspect account activity
Open PlayStation Store transaction history and subscription settings. Look for purchases, renewals, or other activity you do not recognize. Review the payment methods stored on the account and note any change. If anything is unfamiliar, contact PlayStation Support promptly.
-
Check whether the sign-in details changed
Confirm that the sign-in ID (email), online ID, mobile number, and security settings still belong to you. If you cannot change the sign-in method, or any of these details were altered without permission, move to the recovery process below instead of repeatedly guessing passwords.
-
Change reused passwords everywhere else
If the password entered on the fake store was used on another service, replace it there immediately. Change every account that shared it, beginning with email and accounts that can store payment information. Use different passwords going forward; a password manager can generate and store them.
Why the linked email account is the priority
Someone who obtains your PSN password may try to reset it, but control of the linked email account can make that takeover permanent. An attacker with mailbox access can intercept password-reset messages, change the PSN sign-in ID, or delete alerts before you see them. That is why PlayStation’s compromised-account guidance specifically says, “Change the password on your email account.”

Change the email password from a device you trust. Then inspect the email provider’s security page for unfamiliar sessions, recovery details, app passwords, forwarding rules, and filters. Remove access you do not recognize and enable the email provider’s own 2SV if available. These checks protect the reset channel while you repair PSN.
Changing the PSN password or sign-in method safely
Use only official PlayStation Account Management. If you normally reach it through a browser, type the address yourself or use a bookmark you created before the incident. On the account page:
-
Open Security.
-
Select Password and create a new, unique password. If your account offers a Passkey sign-in, review or replace that method as appropriate.
-
Check Sign-in ID and Mobile Number. Make sure neither was replaced.

Sign out of other sessions if Account Management presents that option, then sign in again with the new credential.
-
Return to Security and confirm that 2SV is enabled.
Never share your account details. PlayStation’s security guidance states that if someone signs in to your account, they can change your sign-in information and lock you out. A password change made on an unofficial page does not protect the account; it may simply give the attacker your replacement password.

Setting up 2-step verification and keeping backup access
2SV adds a second proof of identity after the password. PlayStation documents two methods:
- SMS: a sign-in code is sent to the mobile number on the account.
- Authenticator app: a time-based code is generated in an authenticator application.
Choose the method you can reliably access, complete the setup in Account Management, and store every backup code in a secure location. Do not paste backup codes into a message, save them in an unprotected public note, or give them to anyone claiming to be Support. A person who has your password and a backup code may be able to bypass the protection.
If you receive an unexpected 2SV message, do not approve a sign-in you did not start. If codes do not arrive, your phone number changed, or your authenticator is unavailable, follow PlayStation’s 2SV troubleshooting guidance. When the problem persists, use the Online Assistant or contact Support.
Checking purchases, subscriptions, and payment methods
Open your PlayStation Store transaction history and examine entries made after the phishing event. Check subscription settings separately because a recurring renewal may not appear as an obvious one-time purchase. Review the payment methods saved to the account and look for additions, replacements, or a method you do not recognize.
Document unfamiliar activity with the transaction date, amount, and item name before contacting Support. Do not assume that a missing purchase means the account was untouched: an attacker may have changed security details first or may be waiting to use the account. If you cannot access transaction history, tell Support that access was obtained through a fake storefront and that you need the account secured.
Choose the recovery path that matches your situation
| What you can see now | Correct route | Escalate when |
|---|---|---|
| You can still sign in, the email is yours, and no details changed | Use Account Management’s Security settings to replace the password or sign-in method, enable 2SV, save backup codes, and inspect activity. | Contact Support if a transaction, subscription, payment method, or security setting is unfamiliar. |
| The linked email remains accessible, but the PSN password, sign-in ID, or online ID changed | Start PlayStation account recovery and use the Online Assistant for an unrecognized change. | Escalate to Support if recovery cannot restore your sign-in method. |
| You cannot access the linked email account | Recover the email account through its provider first, then begin PSN recovery. | Contact PlayStation Support if the email account cannot be restored or PSN details were changed. |
| You receive unexpected 2SV messages or cannot receive codes | Use PlayStation’s 2SV troubleshooting guidance and verify the mobile number or authenticator setup. | Use the Online Assistant when codes still fail or the second factor was changed. |
| An unfamiliar charge appears | Record the transaction, check subscriptions and payment methods, and stop further account changes until you have documented the issue. | Contact PlayStation Support promptly for the transaction and account review. |
If the scammer changed your email, password, or online ID
Do not keep trying random passwords. Use PlayStation’s account-recovery flow and the Online Assistant, which PlayStation directs users to when an unrecognized sign-in ID, online ID, or password change prevents normal access.
Have the account information you can still verify ready, but do not send passwords or 2SV backup codes to people who contact you unexpectedly. Support should be reached through PlayStation’s official channels. Explain that you entered credentials on a fake PlayStation Store and identify every detail that changed, such as the sign-in ID, online ID, password, mobile number, or 2SV method.

If the attacker changed the email address, securing your original mailbox is still important: it prevents further compromise and may help with recovery notices. Once access is restored, repeat the Security review, enable 2SV, save new backup codes, and inspect transactions and subscriptions.

Attackers commonly test a stolen password against other sites. The risk is not limited to PSN if the same password was used for email, social accounts, gaming services, shopping accounts, or cloud storage.

PlayStation recommends different passwords and keeping a password manager. That advice matters after a phishing event because a single exposed password can otherwise become a key to several accounts.
How to recognize the fake store next time
Branding is not proof of authenticity. A convincing page may arrive through a search advertisement, social-media post, direct message, email, or a misspelled domain. Check the address bar before signing in, avoid links that create urgency about a sale or account suspension, and open the store from a bookmark or the console interface instead of a message.
Legitimate support will not ask you to disclose your password, full recovery codes, or an unsolicited 2SV code. PlayStation’s security guidance says, “Never share your account details.” If a page asks for more information than the normal sign-in or checkout requires, close it and reach the service through an independently opened official channel.
What to monitor after the password change
For the next several days, watch the email account for password-reset notices, new-device alerts, and messages about a changed sign-in ID. Check PSN transaction history and subscriptions again if an alert arrives. Treat any unexpected 2SV prompt as a warning that someone is attempting to sign in; deny it and review the account from Account Management.
Keep the incident details—when you entered the password, which details you submitted, and what changed—in one private record. This timeline helps Support distinguish the phishing event from later activity. The available PlayStation guidance explains the recovery procedures but does not establish a reliable statistic for how common fake-store credential theft is or an average financial loss, so do not use an online percentage or dollar figure to judge your own risk. Your account activity and security settings are the evidence that matters.
When the account is secure
You can consider the immediate response complete when the linked email is protected, the PSN password or sign-in method has been replaced through official Account Management, 2SV is active with backup codes stored safely, and transaction history, subscriptions, payment methods, and security details show no unauthorized change. If any one of those checks fails, keep using the appropriate recovery route and involve PlayStation Support rather than returning to the fake page.
