Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallep24res.dll is an Epson 24-pin printer-driver resource DLL, not a general-purpose runtime for games or ordinary applications. If Windows reports that ep24res.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair the Epson printer package or the Windows component store instead of downloading a loose DLL.
The file is associated with Microsoft Windows printer-driver packaging and is described as an Epson 24-pin printer driver component. Historical Windows inventories list it with other Epson printer resources, while older Epson packages include it alongside printer INF and resource files. That does not establish one universal current version, path, size, or hash for every Windows release.
The safest repair order is:
- Identify what triggered the error.
- Install Windows updates and the correct printer driver.
- Remove and reinstall the affected printer.
- Repair Windows with DISM and SFC.
- Check antivirus quarantine and recent system changes.
- Escalate to System Restore or an in-place Windows repair if the driver still fails.
First, identify what is actually failing
Before changing files, note exactly when the message appears:
- While printing
- While adding or removing a printer
- When opening Printer Properties
- When starting the Print Spooler
- When launching a printer utility
- When opening an unrelated application or game
A printer-related failure strongly suggests an incomplete, damaged, incompatible, or removed Epson driver. An unrelated program requesting ep24res.dll is unusual. It could contain an old bundled printer component, reference an incorrect dependency, or have been installed incorrectly.

- Whether the file exists anywhere under the Windows directory
Possible messages include “ep24res.dll was not found,” “The program can’t start because ep24res.dll is missing from your computer,” or “Error loading ep24res.dll.” If the message says “The specified module could not be found,” the named file may be present while another dependency is missing.
Do not assume that the application named in the dialog owns the file. Printer-driver failures can surface through print dialogs, shell extensions, vendor utilities, and spooler processes.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and the correct printer driver
Time needed: 10–25 minutes, plus any download and restart time
This is the most likely fix when the error appears during printing, printer setup, or access to printer properties. Microsoft distributes some printer drivers through Windows Update, but the exact Epson package still depends on the printer model and Windows architecture.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCheck Windows Update
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart Windows if requested.
- Return to Windows Update.
- Select Advanced options.
- Open Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates.
- Install an Epson printer driver if one is listed.
- Restart again.
Microsoft explains that Windows Update can provide recommended hardware drivers, including printer drivers. If no Epson driver appears, that does not mean the printer is unsupported. Continue with the model-specific installation.
Use the exact Epson model package
Find the model number from the printer itself, its control panel, or an existing printer entry. Then use the official Epson support page for that model and select the package for your Windows release and architecture.
Do not install a generic “24-pin” package merely because its name resembles ep24res.dll. Epson has historical 24-pin driver families, but an older Windows 3.1 or Vista-era package is not automatically suitable for Windows 10 or Windows 11.
During installation:
- Disconnect the USB cable if the installer tells you to do so.
- Run the Epson installer with the correct model selected.
- Accept the driver and catalog installation.
- Connect the printer only when prompted.
- Select the correct USB, TCP/IP, or shared-printer connection.
- Complete the installation.
- Print a Windows test page.
If the installer reports that a newer driver is already installed, do not immediately overwrite random files. Remove the affected printer and its old package using the procedure in the next fix, then install the matching package again.
Manually comparing dozens of driver versions and finding stale packages can be tedious. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention; its repair or driver installation features require the full version. It is optional, and the official Epson model package remains the preferred source when you know the printer model.
Check whether the driver installed successfully
After installation:
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Choose the Epson printer.
- Select Printer properties.
- Select Print Test Page.
If the test page prints and the original application opens normally, the driver package was the problem.
If the test page fails, continue. A successful installer does not prove that the model, port, language monitor, INF, or architecture is correct.
Fix 2: Remove the damaged printer and reinstall it
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
A driver can remain partly installed after a failed update, printer removal, disk cleanup, or interrupted setup. Reinstalling the printer through Windows can restore the resource references without copying individual DLLs.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

- Press Windows + I.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.

- Select Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
After restarting:
- Open Settings again.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Choose Add device.
- Wait for Windows to discover the printer.
- If it is not found, select the option to add it manually.
- Choose the correct USB, network, or shared-printer method.
- Install the exact Epson driver when Windows requests one.
- Print a test page.
Remove an old driver package when necessary
Use this step carefully because removing the wrong shared driver can affect other printers.
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter:
text
printui.exe /s /t2
- Press Enter.
- Select the Drivers tab.
- Locate the Epson driver matching the affected model.
- Select Remove.
- Choose Remove driver and driver package if Windows offers that option.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current model-specific Epson driver.
If the driver is not listed, do not delete files from System32, SysWOW64, or DriverStoreFileRepository manually. Windows protects these locations because the driver package includes catalogs, INF files, dependencies, and installation metadata.
You can also inspect the device entry:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers or Print queues.
- Right-click the Epson device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If offered, select the option to remove the driver package.
- Restart.
- Reinstall the correct driver.
Only remove the affected Epson entry after confirming the printer model. Do not uninstall unrelated printers or generic print components.
Fix 3: Check whether Windows still has the file
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
The file may be present in Windows’ driver store but missing from the location expected by the installed printer package. This is a packaging or installation problem, not a reason to copy the file by hand.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Open Terminal or Command Prompt as administrator:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin).
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
text
where /r %windir% ep24res.dll
If a path appears, record it. A path under a Windows driver repository indicates that some package still contains the file, but it does not prove that the active printer installation is correct.
If no path appears, the file may not be installed, may have been quarantined, or may belong to an Epson package that was never installed for this model.

Do not copy a result from one directory into another. System32 and SysWOW64 have counterintuitive names, and a 32-bit file cannot be substituted for a 64-bit driver resource. Let the proper INF-based installer place the file.
If you know that the file is supposed to be a protected Windows file at a specific path, you can verify that path with:
sfc /verifyfile=%windir%System32ep24res.dll
SFC may report that the file is not protected or is not present at that location. That result does not prove the Epson driver is broken, because SFC repairs protected Windows components, not every third-party printer package.
Fix 4: Repair the Windows component store and protected files
Time needed: 15–45 minutes
Use this when the problem began after Windows Update, a failed driver installation, system cleanup, unexpected shutdown, or other Windows corruption. Run DISM before SFC.
Open Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin) and run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for the operation to finish. It may appear to pause at a percentage for a while. Do not close the terminal during the repair.

sfc /scannow
Restart Windows when both commands finish.
Interpret the results
- No integrity violations: Windows’ protected files appear intact. Reinstall the Epson driver anyway, because SFC does not validate every third-party driver package.
- Corrupt files were found and repaired: Restart and test the printer again.
- Some files could not be repaired: Run DISM again, confirm that Windows Update is working, then run SFC again.
- DISM cannot find source files: Windows may need access to Windows Update or a matching repair source. Do not use an arbitrary ISO or copied DLL.
Microsoft documents DISM as a repair mechanism for the Windows image and SFC as a tool for scanning protected system files.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing which component changed can make troubleshooting slow. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for Windows problems and show what needs attention; its repair features require the full version. It is optional, and it cannot replace reinstalling the correct Epson driver when that package is the real source of the missing file.
After the repair, reinstall the Epson printer if the error remains. DISM and SFC may repair Windows dependencies without rebuilding a damaged printer package.
Fix 5: Check Windows Security Protection History
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Antivirus software may quarantine a legitimate driver resource after a false detection, or it may remove a malicious file that merely has a familiar name. The filename alone is not enough to decide.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Look for an entry referring to
ep24res.dll, an Epson driver, or the printer installer. - Expand the entry and inspect its original path and detection details.
Restore a quarantined file only if all of the following are true:
- The original location belongs to the expected Windows driver package.
- The file came from an official Microsoft or Epson installation.
- The package has a valid digital signature or can be reinstalled from the official source.
- You are confident the detection is a false positive.
If any of those conditions is unclear, leave the file quarantined and reinstall the driver from the official source. Restoring a genuine threat can put Windows and personal data at risk.
After reinstalling, run a full Windows Security scan if the file was found in a temporary folder, a random download directory, or an unrelated application folder.
Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent driver change
Time needed: 20–45 minutes
System Restore is useful if printing worked until a driver update, printer removal, cleanup utility, or other system change.
Recommended Free Tools
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter:

rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore may roll back drivers and system files, but it does not substitute for identifying the correct Epson package. After restoration, pause before reinstalling the same driver update that caused the problem.
If no suitable restore point exists, return to Windows Update and the official Epson model package rather than attempting manual DLL replacement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why downloading or registering ep24res.dll is unsafe
A standalone DLL download is not a complete printer-driver repair. It can provide:
- The wrong Windows-generation version
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- A modified or malicious file
- A file without its matching INF and catalog
- A resource that depends on other missing components
- A file placed in the wrong directory
Manual copying can also bypass driver signing, catalog validation, dependency installation, and printer configuration.

Do not copy ep24res.dll into System32, SysWOW64, an application folder, or the printer utility’s directory. Do not replace it with a file from another computer unless you are rebuilding the exact matching signed package through a supported installation source.
regsvr32 normally does not apply. It is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by COM or ActiveX components. A printer resource DLL is normally referenced by the printer INF or minidriver rather than registered as a standalone COM server. Running commands such as these is therefore not a normal repair:
regsvr32 ep24res.dll
regsvr32 /u ep24res.dll
If one fails, the failure does not identify the underlying driver problem.
Visual C++, DirectX, and .NET are also not the normal fixes for this file. Install those components only when the exact application documentation or error identifies them as a dependency. The name ep24res.dll points to Epson printer-driver resources, not to a general runtime library.
Windows Features are usually irrelevant here. Enabling or disabling items such as .NET Framework or legacy components will not rebuild an Epson printer package.
Common causes and the corresponding fix
| Likely cause | What usually works |
|---|---|
| Incomplete Epson driver installation | Reinstall the exact model package |
| Windows Update changed or damaged the printer driver | Install updates, remove the printer, then reinstall |
| Wrong architecture or legacy package | Use the package matching the Windows architecture and model |
| Antivirus quarantine | Verify provenance, then reinstall from an official source |
| Printer removal left stale package references | Remove the old driver and add the printer again |
| Windows component-store corruption | Run DISM, then SFC |
| Recent system change | Use System Restore |
| Disk or file-system damage | Scan the system, check disk health, and reinstall the driver |
| Unrelated application requests the file | Investigate that application’s installer and dependencies |
Historical records include different versions and package layouts, including a Windows 2000 inventory version and a Vista-era Epson package containing EP24RES.DLL. Those records are useful for identifying the file, but they are not universal Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation instructions.
32-bit and 64-bit checks
To check your Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Find System type.
Use the Epson package intended for that architecture. A 32-bit printer component cannot simply be substituted into a 64-bit installation, and a 64-bit package may not work on 32-bit Windows.
The presence of a file under DriverStoreFileRepository also does not prove that the active printer uses it. Windows can retain packages for devices that are no longer installed, while the current printer may reference a different INF or architecture.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →When to consider an in-place Windows repair
Use an in-place repair only after:
- The exact Epson driver has been reinstalled
- The printer has been removed and added again
- DISM and SFC have completed
- Windows Security has been checked
- System Restore is unavailable or unsuccessful
- Other Windows components also show corruption
An in-place repair refreshes Windows while preserving personal files and installed applications when performed correctly, but it should be treated as a Windows repair procedure, not an Epson driver installation. Back up important files first and use installation media that matches the installed Windows edition and language.
FAQ
Is ep24res.dll a legitimate Windows file?
It is a genuine Epson 24-pin printer-driver resource associated with Windows printer-driver packaging. A legitimate file should still be judged by its path, signature, package origin, and printer context.
Is it made by Microsoft or Epson?
The file is cataloged in a Microsoft Windows context, while its function belongs to Epson printer-driver support. Windows may deliver the driver, and Epson may provide the model-specific package. The exact ownership and package layout can vary by Windows release and driver generation.
Which Epson printer model uses it?
No single current model can be assigned safely from the filename alone. Identify the printer model and install its exact supported package. Historical packages include Epson 24-pin resources, but old package listings should not be treated as universal modern compatibility information.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Usually no. Those are not the normal dependencies for an Epson printer resource DLL. Repair the printer driver first.
Should I run regsvr32 ep24res.dll?
No. A printer resource DLL is normally loaded through the printer INF or minidriver and is not normally registered with regsvr32.
What if SFC says everything is fine?
That means protected Windows files passed its check. It does not prove that the Epson driver package, printer INF, port, language monitor, or architecture is correct. Reinstall the printer driver.
What if the file exists but Windows still reports it missing?
The active printer package may reference a different path, version, dependency, or architecture. Remove the affected printer and reinstall the matching driver instead of copying the existing file.
What details should I provide when asking for help?
Provide the exact error text, printer model, Windows version, 32-bit or 64-bit architecture, the action that triggers the error, recent driver or Windows changes, and the output of the file search. Do not upload a DLL from an untrusted source.
The reliable endpoint is a complete, model-specific Epson printer installation. If the error appeared in an unrelated application and remains after printer repair, treat that application as a separate problem and inspect its installer rather than forcing ep24res.dll into its folder.
