Epic Games announced plans to rebuild the Epic Games Store Launcher’s underlying architecture, targeting faster loading, greater responsiveness and improved stability in summer 2026. The same roadmap outlines community spaces and a broader social layer, but it does not confirm a complete storefront redesign or explain exactly what community spaces will include. As of August 18, 2026, the announced targets are not proof that each feature has shipped.
What Epic announced for the Store
In its February 3, 2026 2025 year-in-review and roadmap, Epic described a rebuild of the launcher’s underlying architecture, with improvements to loading, responsiveness, usability and stability targeted for summer 2026. That is a technical foundation project, not confirmation that Epic is replacing the whole storefront or giving it a new visual design.

The roadmap groups several distinct projects: launcher performance, social features, library and storefront infrastructure, and mobile expansion. Epic’s stated timing is a set of targets; the announcement does not establish that the milestones were delivered by those dates.

What are Epic’s “community spaces”?
Epic has described community spaces as a planned social layer inside the Store, but the announcement does not spell out their design. It does not say whether they will be game-specific discussion boards, developer announcement feeds, groups, event hubs, or something else. Nor does it confirm user reviews, guides, screenshots, mods, or a Reddit- or Discord-style service.
That distinction matters: “community spaces” is a broad label, not a feature specification. Their value will depend on where users can participate, what they can post, how content is discovered, and how moderation and privacy work. Until Epic defines those details, it is more accurate to call them planned spaces for community activity than to treat them as Steam-style forums or a finished product.
Epic’s social roadmap goes beyond community spaces
Epic separately named avatars, player profiles, private messaging and cross-platform text chat, with voice chat and game-independent parties targeted for Q2 2026. The longer-term plan also says social capabilities may be made available through Epic Online Services (EOS) for other developers. That could extend some Epic social tools into games beyond Epic’s own storefront, but the announcement does not establish that third-party integrations are already available.

Text chat is a separate, earlier step. Epic announced a unified chat experience connecting Fortnite, the Epic Games Store and its mobile applications, with conversations syncing across those parts of its ecosystem. The company’s text-chat announcement also says users can report messages through the conversation interface using its three-dot control when reporting is enabled.

They have different functions and their own rollout and safety questions. The text-chat reporting option is a useful starting point, but a larger social network will also need clear blocking, privacy, parental-control and enforcement tools.
Why Epic is investing in the launcher and social tools
Epic’s 2025 figures show a platform with meaningful reach and a mixed engagement picture. The company reported $400 million in spending on third-party PC games, up 57% year over year, and 2.78 billion hours played in third-party games, up 4%. Total PC player spending reached $1.16 billion, up 6%, while total gameplay hours fell 14% to 6.65 billion.

Epic also reported a record 78 million PC monthly active users in December 2025, alongside 67 million average monthly active users and 31 million average daily active users. It said the Store had more than 317 million PC players and a catalog of over 6,000 games. These are company-reported figures, not an independent measurement of market share. The 78-million December record and the lower average figures describe different measures, so they do not cancel out the decline in total playtime.
The free-games program remains a major acquisition feature: Epic reported 662 million titles claimed in 2025. A claim is not the same as a purchase, regular play or lasting loyalty. Taken together, the numbers suggest that Epic has grown third-party commerce while still facing the challenge of getting players to spend more time across the wider platform.

How Epic’s pitch compares with Steam
Steam has a mature PC community and discovery ecosystem, including discussion, reviews and mod distribution. Epic’s planned profiles, messaging and community spaces address some of the expectations that come with an established storefront, but Epic has not said that it will match Steam feature-for-feature. Independent coverage has also noted the historical gap in areas such as reviews and built-in mod support (Thurrott’s coverage).

The more useful comparison is about platform strategy. Epic is trying to join its PC store to Fortnite, mobile apps, EOS and cross-platform account services. Steam’s established PC community tools are a point of comparison; Epic’s cross-product ecosystem and developer terms are a different part of its pitch. Whether that mix makes Epic a more useful everyday storefront will depend on what actually ships and how well it works.

Epic is pairing player-facing improvements with commercial incentives. Under the company’s stated policy, developers keep 100% of the first $1 million in annual net revenue per product, per year before its standard 88/12 revenue split applies. Epic also says developers can use their own payment systems for in-game purchases without Epic taking revenue from those transactions, and offers Epic Web Shops for selling in-game content through its commerce infrastructure. These terms are described in Epic’s 2025 review; a studio should check the applicable terms for its product and territory.
For developers, economics and player experience solve different problems. A more favorable revenue model may help attract a game to the Store, while faster storefronts, better discovery and useful social features could help players find and stay with it. The infrastructure rebuild may also benefit catalog, account or API experiences, but Epic has not published engineering details or performance benchmarks that demonstrate those outcomes.

Epic also plans to use Fortnite’s audience to promote participating games. Buyers of eligible titles were to receive a Fortnite cosmetic and a matching Epic account avatar. Initial named partners included Capcom, miHoYo, Pearl Abyss, S-Game, MintRocket and Kakao Games, with availability announced for the first half of 2026. The idea is a cross-product funnel: Fortnite can put a participating game in front of its players. Epic has not disclosed conversion or retention results, so the promotion’s lasting value to developers remains unproven.
What players should check as features roll out
- Launcher performance: Look for practical improvements in startup, storefront responsiveness and stability rather than assuming a rebuild guarantees them.
- Community-space scope: Check which games or users can access the feature and whether Epic has defined posting, moderation and discovery tools.
- Privacy and safety: Review controls for profiles, messages, presence and voice, along with blocking, reporting and parental options.
- Party compatibility: Confirm which platforms and games support voice or game-independent parties; a roadmap mention does not guarantee universal support.
- Library meaning: A shared PC/mobile library does not by itself mean a game can run on every device, a purchase transfers between platforms, or cross-save and cross-play are supported.
- Mobile availability: Epic’s roadmap also named iOS expansion to Japan for March 2026 and Brazil for June 2026, but those were announced targets; current regional availability is not established by the roadmap alone.
- Developer integration: Studios considering EOS or new APIs should verify that the required tools are released and documented, rather than basing a launch plan on a future target.
The strategic test for Epic
Epic’s announcement is best understood as platform modernization and catch-up, not a confirmed new storefront launch. The launcher rebuild addresses performance and reliability; community spaces and social tools aim to give players reasons to browse and communicate; library, regional-storefront and mobile plans extend the ecosystem. The open question is whether these pieces become reliable, well-moderated services that people use habitually—not merely a longer feature list.
