Microsoft announced a web-based Xbox mobile game store for July 2024, but it did not launch publicly on that timetable. As of August 18, 2026, Microsoft offers mobile Xbox purchases and cloud gaming, but has announced no replacement launch date for the standalone store originally described.
What Microsoft announced in May 2024
Xbox president Sarah Bond said Microsoft would begin launching a mobile game store on the web in July 2024. The plan was to start with Microsoft-owned mobile properties, including Candy Crush and Minecraft, then expand to games from outside publishers. The proposal was presented as another route to reach players beyond Apple’s App Store and Google Play. TechCrunch reported the announcement.
“Xbox mobile game store” is a descriptive label, not a confirmed final product name. Microsoft did not announce a finished launch catalog: Candy Crush and Minecraft were named examples, not proof that a complete storefront or a particular set of games would be available on day one. Call of Duty: Mobile and Diablo Immortal were also discussed in contemporary coverage, but that did not establish them as confirmed launch titles. MobileSyrup covered the announcement and examples.
What a web-first store would—and would not—do
A web storefront could let customers browse and pay in a browser on different devices. It would not automatically be an iPhone or Android marketplace, nor would it necessarily install native games directly. A purchase might instead cover an in-game item, currency, add-on, game entitlement, or access to a Microsoft service. Whether an item bought on the web works inside a particular game depends on that game’s account and billing setup.

The web-first plan was meant to reduce Microsoft’s reliance on Apple and Google for distribution and commerce. Those platforms’ fees vary by developer, transaction, program, and region, so the often-cited figure of “up to 30%” should not be read as a universal rate. Microsoft did not publish a final storefront fee schedule or establish that the proposed store would enable unrestricted iPhone sideloading.
Why the July 2024 launch did not happen
By late July 2024, coverage described a “coming soon” page but no full public storefront with the promised catalog and publisher ecosystem. A teaser page was not the launch Microsoft had outlined. Windows Central reported on the page and the missing public rollout.

Later reporting tied the delay to uncertainty around Apple’s and Google’s mobile platform rules and related legal and regulatory developments. Xbox chief Phil Spencer confirmed a delay, but the available public accounts do not establish a complete internal explanation or a single cause. Windows Central’s coverage of Spencer’s comments discusses that context.

- Xbox mobile app: Browse and buy Xbox console and PC games, add-ons, and Game Pass, and use other Xbox account and console features. The app’s Store tab is for Xbox ecosystem purchases; buying a console game on a phone does not mean downloading a native iPhone version. Microsoft lists compatibility as iOS 15.1 or later and Android 8.0 or later on its Xbox mobile app page.
- Cloud gaming: Stream supported games through xbox.com/play where the service, plan, region, device, and network support it. Streaming a game is not the same as downloading a mobile game, and not every Xbox title is available to play this way. See Xbox’s mobile gaming overview for its current options.
- Remote play: Stream from your own Xbox console to a supported mobile device. This is distinct from cloud gaming and from purchasing or installing a native mobile game.
Microsoft’s December 2025 update described a dedicated Store tab in the Xbox mobile app and mobile purchases. That is evidence of an improved way to shop for Xbox content, not evidence that the separate mobile-game storefront launched. Xbox’s update details the app changes.

The July 2024 rollout did not materialize, and later reporting in 2026 described the standalone project as stalled or apparently inactive. Microsoft has also been reported as saying the broader idea is “not dead.” Those positions do not amount to a public launch commitment: Microsoft’s current official mobile pages describe app shopping, cloud gaming, and remote play, and do not announce a replacement date for a separate mobile-game store. Windows Central reported on signs of inactivity; PocketGamer.biz reported Microsoft’s “not dead” position.
Quick Recap
What to do if you want to play Xbox on mobile
- Install or update the official Xbox mobile app from your device’s usual app store, then sign in with the Microsoft account associated with your Xbox library.
- Use the app’s Store tab to browse supported Xbox games, add-ons, or Game Pass. Check the product and platform details before buying; a console or PC entitlement is not automatically a mobile-game download.
- For streaming, visit xbox.com/play and check that the game, plan, location, device, and connection are supported.
- If a web purchase does not appear in a game, check which account you used to buy it and which account is signed in within the game. Some purchases remain tied to a particular platform or game account.
