His objection was specific: the unofficial project was using Fortnite’s name and imagery to market a separate product. That was Sweeney’s characterization, not a reported court ruling about the project.
What Tim Sweeney said
Sweeney posted his warning on June 6, 2022. Contemporary reports published June 7 and 8 reproduced his statement: “There isn’t a Fortnite cryptocurrency. The Twitter accounts promoting such a thing are a scam. Epic’s lawyers are on it. Also, shame on the cryptocurrency marketplaces that enable this kind of thing.”
He also addressed the project’s use of Fortnite branding: “That’s not how trademarks and copyrights work though. You can’t use the Fortnite name and images without permission to market an unrelated product.” His earlier, shorter reply was reported as: “This is a scam.”
What Fortnite Token claimed to be
Contemporary coverage described Fortnite Token as an unofficial cryptocurrency project. Its account characterized it as a fan-created, community-driven project and described it as a fair launch, without identifying a specified owner or company structure. Those were the project’s own claims; they do not establish Epic’s authorization or endorsement.

Game Developer also reported that the project used Fortnite branding and invited people to mint NFTs for resale. That describes what the outlet reported at the time, not a verified account of the project’s current website, listings, or availability.
Why Sweeney objected—and what is not established
Sweeney’s stated objection was that the project could not use Fortnite’s name and images without permission to market an unrelated product. The cited contemporary coverage does not report a court finding or final legal judgment on that claim, nor does it establish the outcome of Epic’s announced legal response.

The reports also do not establish Fortnite Token’s later price, trading status, availability, or legal outcome. They do not support a claim that the project was shut down.

No. Sweeney’s disavowal of Fortnite Token is separate from Epic’s broader position on blockchain games. TechSpot reported that on October 15, 2021, Sweeney said the Epic Games Store would accept blockchain games if they complied with relevant laws, disclosed their terms, and received age ratings. The same report said Epic was not using cryptocurrency in its own games at that time. That is historical context, not confirmation of current store policy.
