Epic Games connection problems on Windows PC can come from an Epic service outage, the launcher, your router or DNS, a VPN or proxy, security software, Windows networking, or one damaged game installation. Check Epic’s service status first, then use the symptom that matches your failure. Do not reinstall the launcher until the lower-risk fixes have failed.
1. Check whether Epic Games is down
Open the Epic Games Public Status page before changing anything on your PC. Check the individual components, including the Epic Games Store, Authentication, Epic Online Services, game services, matchmaking, and downloads or content delivery.

These services can fail independently. The Store may work while one game’s matchmaking does not, or the launcher may sign in while downloads are degraded. If the status page reports an incident, wait for Epic to restore service and monitor the affected component. Repeated DNS resets, cache deletion, or reinstalls will not repair an Epic-side outage.

2. Identify what is actually failing
The correct fix depends on the symptom:

3. Try the quick, low-risk fixes
- Restart Epic Games Launcher and Windows. Exit the launcher completely from the notification area, then restart the PC.
- Restart the modem or router. Close the launcher, unplug the router or modem according to its instructions, wait briefly, reconnect it, and wait for the connection to return.
- Test a phone hotspot. Connect the PC temporarily to a hotspot and try Epic again. If the hotspot works, focus on the home router, DNS, ISP, firewall, or network policy. If it also fails, the launcher, Windows, account, security software, or Epic may be responsible.
- Use Ethernet temporarily if available. This can help distinguish unstable Wi-Fi from other causes; it does not guarantee lower gaming latency.
- Stop competing traffic. Pause large downloads, cloud backups, streaming, and other traffic while testing.
- Disconnect VPNs and disable proxies temporarily. A VPN or proxy can interfere with authentication, routing, or certificate checks. Re-enable required protection after the test.
4. Check Windows date, time, and time zone
An incorrect clock can interfere with secure connections and authentication.
- Open Settings.
- Go to Time & language → Date & time.
- Turn on Set time automatically.
- Confirm the time zone is correct.
- Select Sync now if it is available.
- Restart Epic Games Launcher and test again.
5. Clear the Epic Games Launcher cache
Cache deletion is especially useful for a blank Store page, login loop, broken launcher display, or launcher connection error. It does not delete installed games; the launcher recreates the cache.
- Exit Epic Games Launcher completely. Click the upward arrow in the Windows notification area, right-click the Epic Games icon, and select Exit.
- Press Windows + R and enter
%localappdata%. - Open
EpicGamesLauncherSaved. - Delete any of these folders that exist:
webcache
webcache_4147
webcache_4430- Reopen the launcher and test the Store, login, download, or game.
Not all three folders will necessarily be present. See Epic’s official cache instructions if the path differs on your installation.
6. Update the launcher and test administrator permissions
If the launcher opens, click your profile icon in the top-right, select Settings, and choose Restart and Update if that option is shown.

To test a permissions problem, close the launcher, right-click its shortcut, and select Run as administrator. This may help with downloading or writing files to a restricted location, but it is not a general internet fix.
7. Reset Windows networking
Use these commands when DNS appears stale or Windows networking may be corrupted. Open Command Prompt as administrator and run:
netsh winsock resetRestart Windows. Then open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdnsnetsh winsock reset resets the Winsock catalog. The release and renew commands refresh the DHCP address, while ipconfig /flushdns clears cached DNS lookups. These commands cannot fix an Epic outage, account problem, blocked firewall rule, or game-server failure. Epic documents this sequence in its Windows DNS guidance.
8. Try another DNS server
DNS translates service names into IP addresses. If your ISP’s resolver is returning stale or failed results, switching DNS may help the launcher find Epic services.

Changing DNS is a troubleshooting option, not a guaranteed way to improve download speed or in-game ping. It cannot repair an outage, damaged files, authentication failure, firewall block, or game-server problem. Managed, school, business, and parental-control networks may require their existing DNS settings.

Windows Defender Firewall, third-party antivirus, endpoint security, web shields, overlays, traffic shapers, download managers, hardware-monitoring utilities, and other launchers can interfere with Epic or a game.
- Confirm the Epic Games Launcher is allowed through Windows Defender Firewall.
- Where appropriate, add the launcher and affected game to the security product’s allowed-app or exclusion list. Use the actual executable paths on your PC; they vary by installation and game.
- If necessary, temporarily disable only the relevant firewall or web-filtering component to test it.
- Re-enable protection immediately after testing, then create an allow rule rather than leaving security disabled.
If the problem started after installing Bitdefender, another antivirus package, a VPN, or filtering software, test that product first. Epic provides a security-software troubleshooting guide.
Advanced users can also perform a clean-boot-style test by temporarily disabling nonessential startup services and applications, then restoring them after testing. Do not permanently disable every startup item without recording what you changed.
10. Verify the affected game’s files
Verify files when the launcher connects normally but one game will not launch, repeatedly patches, reports missing files, or appears damaged.

- Open Epic Games Launcher and select Library.
- Find the game and click the three dots next to it.
- Select Manage.
- Click Verify and wait for validation to finish.
Epic says verification checks for damaged or changed files and repairs differences. Its instructions state that saved data is not affected. See the official verification guide.

A failure that appears connection-related can occur while the launcher is extracting, patching, or writing files. Check that the target drive has enough free space, is accessible, and is not read-only. Also check whether security software is blocking the game folder and whether the Windows account has permission to write there. If only one installation fails, this branch is more relevant than changing DNS.
12. Advanced fixes
Reset the Windows Hosts file
A modified Hosts file can redirect or block Epic domains. Use this only after checking the router, DNS, proxy, and security software. Back up the file first and restore it to Microsoft’s default configuration; do not download a replacement Hosts file from an unknown site. Epic includes this option in its connection troubleshooting flow.
Run System File Checker
If Windows system files may be damaged, open Command Prompt as administrator and run:

Try Offline Mode only for supported offline play
Offline Mode may let some installed single-player games start during a temporary connection problem. It cannot restore sign-in, matchmaking, parties, social features, or other online services, and support varies by game.
13. Do not confuse Epic, Fortnite, and game-server failures
“Epic is down” is not a single condition. The Store, authentication, Epic Online Services, Fortnite matchmaking, and an individual game’s servers can have separate problems. If the launcher works but one game cannot matchmake, investigate that game and its service status rather than repeatedly clearing the launcher cache. Fortnite-specific anti-cheat, matchmaking, and game-server issues may require a different support branch.
Port forwarding is not a first-line fix for ordinary PC connection errors. Reserve it for persistent, network-specific cases after basic diagnostics and follow the router and game service’s documented requirements.

14. Reinstall the launcher only as a last resort
Before uninstalling, confirm there is no outage, clear the cache, test another connection, check VPN/proxy and security settings, determine whether one game or every game is affected, and note your installed-game locations.
Important: Epic’s documented Windows reinstall procedure warns that uninstalling the launcher can remove installed titles. Do not proceed until you understand the consequence for your installation.
- Open an elevated Command Prompt and run
sfc /scannowfirst. - Restart Windows.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps (or Add or Remove Programs) and uninstall Epic Games Launcher.
- Download the installer only from Epic’s official download page.
- Reinstall, sign in, and restore or reinstall games as required.

When to contact Epic Support
Escalate when the status page is operational but the problem persists across multiple networks, or when several Epic games and devices fail in the same account. Record the exact error message and code, date and time with your time zone, whether the Epic website works, whether a hotspot works, whether another Epic game works, the status-page condition, Windows version, VPN/proxy/antivirus/firewall software, and every step already attempted. Include launcher logs if Epic Support requests them. This gives support useful evidence instead of another list of already-tried fixes.
