Epic ended distribution of its mobile games through Samsung’s Galaxy Store in 2024; it did not stop supporting Samsung phones. Epic’s current guidance directs players to download its Android store from Epic or, for Fortnite, use Google Play where the listing is available. Cloud play is another option in supported regions.
What Epic removed—and what it did not
Epic announced on July 25, 2024, that Fortnite and its other mobile games would leave the Galaxy Store. The change concerns the store used to distribute Epic’s games, not whether those games can run on Samsung devices. Epic’s support page specifically says Fortnite and Rocket League Sideswipe are no longer available for download through the Epic Games app distributed via the Galaxy Store, and directs users to Epic’s website instead. Epic’s announcement and current support guidance establish the change. Epic’s broader 2024 announcement referred to its other games, but the support page names Fortnite and Rocket League Sideswipe specifically.

Epic’s Samsung page currently lists the Epic Games Store for Android and Google Play as Fortnite installation routes, plus Xbox Cloud Gaming, GeForce NOW and Amazon Luna in supported regions. Store listings and cloud-service availability can vary by country and device.
Why Epic left the Galaxy Store
Epic said it was protesting Samsung’s decision to enable Auto Blocker by default. Epic argues that the security feature makes sideloading and installing competing app stores harder, and tied its concerns to allegations raised in the Epic v. Google litigation about Google’s relationship with Samsung. These are Epic’s stated position and allegations, not a finding here that Samsung violated antitrust law. Samsung disputed Epic’s characterization in its response reported by The Associated Press.

Auto Blocker is a Samsung security feature intended to block installation of apps from unauthorized sources and other activity Samsung considers risky. Epic’s Samsung FAQ includes instructions for disabling it on phones running One UI 6.1.1, but menus and controls can differ across models and software versions.
How to install Fortnite or another Epic game on a Samsung phone
Use Epic’s Android store
- Open Epic’s official Android download page on the Samsung device and download the Epic Games Store app.
- If Samsung blocks the installer, review Auto Blocker and the setting that controls installation from unknown sources in the device’s security settings. The exact menu path varies; consult Epic’s Samsung FAQ for its One UI 6.1.1 guidance.
- Only change the setting if you are installing the app downloaded from Epic’s official site. Install the Epic Games Store, open it, then select the game you want.
- Re-enable the security protection afterward if you do not plan to install other apps outside an official store.
Epic lists Android 8 (SDK 26) as the minimum for its Android store and recommends Android 14 (SDK 34) or later for optimal performance. Its approximately 25 MB figure is for the store app, not the full storage space needed by Fortnite or another game. Epic says the store is available worldwide except where prohibited by U.S. law, including North Korea and Iran; individual games may have additional regional restrictions.

Use Google Play for Fortnite
Epic currently lists Google Play as a Fortnite download option for Samsung users. This avoids sideloading, but do not assume the listing is available in every territory or for every device. Check that the listing and publisher are genuine before installing. Epic’s page identifies this route; it does not establish that every Epic game is available on Google Play.
Use cloud streaming
Epic lists Xbox Cloud Gaming, GeForce NOW and Amazon Luna as Fortnite options in supported regions. Streaming avoids a native game installation and can help if storage, device compatibility or security restrictions are a barrier. It depends on a reliable, low-latency connection and may involve queues, session limits, subscription costs or different input and image quality from native play. NVIDIA says its Android app supports Fortnite streaming with touch controls and Epic-account linking.

If Fortnite is already installed
Do not uninstall a working copy just because Galaxy Store distribution ended. Epic says existing players should follow the in-game prompt to update through the Epic Games app. If the update fails, install or update that app from Epic’s official site and follow the game’s prompt. Avoid APK mirrors and unofficial download pages.
- Epic’s installer is blocked: Check Auto Blocker and unknown-source installation settings; menu labels vary. Do not attempt to override a work, school or administrator policy.
- The setting is locked: A managed-device policy may prevent sideloading. Ask the device administrator or use an available official store or supported cloud service instead.
- The store or game will not install: Check Epic’s Android version requirements and available storage. The store app’s approximately 25 MB size is not the game’s storage requirement.
- A listing or cloud service is missing: Availability may depend on region, device or account. Use the route Epic currently shows for your location; do not assume a VPN or another workaround will make a service available.
Choosing an installation route
| Route | Best suited to | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Epic Games Store for Android | Players who want Epic’s direct storefront and mobile titles | May require sideloading and a security-setting change |
| Google Play | Players who prefer conventional store installation and updates | Fortnite availability can vary; Epic does not list every game there |
| Cloud gaming | Players avoiding native installation or with limited storage | Requires a strong connection; regional availability, queues, limits or paid membership may apply |
For frequent play, native installation avoids the connection dependence of streaming but uses storage and requires a compatible device. Cloud play avoids downloading the full game, but network quality and provider conditions shape the experience. A subscription is not inherently required to install Fortnite: Epic lists direct Android installation and Google Play as routes, subject to compatibility and availability.

Why the dispute matters beyond Fortnite
The disagreement is about control over Android distribution as much as a single game: which storefront reaches users, how much friction accompanies installation outside the default store, and who controls payments and store terms. Epic’s objection is that Samsung’s default security setting disadvantages competing stores; Samsung’s security rationale is that Auto Blocker helps prevent risky installations. The practical consequence for Galaxy owners is narrower: the Galaxy Store is no longer Epic’s distribution route, while Epic’s Android store remains separate and its listed alternatives remain available subject to their own requirements.
