Microsoft began previewing mouse-and-keyboard controls for Xbox Cloud Gaming on March 26, 2024. The first rollout was a test for Xbox Insiders enrolled in the PC Gaming Preview—not a universal feature for every Game Pass subscriber or every cloud game. It initially worked through Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, and the Xbox app on Windows PCs. Microsoft later said that more than 130 cloud games had active mouse-and-keyboard support as of December 16, 2025, but compatibility remains title-specific.
What Microsoft announced
The March 2024 rollout added native mouse-and-keyboard input to a limited Xbox Cloud Gaming preview. Microsoft documented the feature in its Xbox Insider release notes and confirmed the rollout context in its March 26 Omega notes.
At launch, access required an Xbox Insider account enrolled in the PC Gaming Preview. A Game Pass entitlement and preview eligibility were separate requirements; having one did not automatically provide the other. Browser access used Edge or Chrome, while Windows users could also try the Xbox app. Availability could also vary by region, account, device and current Xbox program rules.
How to enable the original browser preview
- Open xbox.com/play and sign in with the eligible Microsoft/Xbox account.
- Select your profile picture, open Settings, then enable Preview features.
- Launch a game that supports the input method.
- Put the browser stream into full-screen mode.
- Click inside the game stream to capture the pointer.
- If controller prompts remain, move the mouse or press a key so the game detects the new input.
Press F9 to leave mouse-and-keyboard mode. Press Esc to exit browser full-screen. Clicking outside the stream can return focus to the page and stop the game receiving mouse input. These browser behaviors are described in Microsoft’s release notes.

How broad is support now?
Microsoft reported on December 16, 2025, that more than 130 cloud games had active mouse-and-keyboard support. That milestone makes the 14-game list historical rather than definitive. Check the current Xbox catalog for the exact title, region, Game Pass entitlement and access method you plan to use.

These categories are not interchangeable:
- A game can be cloud-playable without accepting mouse and keyboard.
- Touch controls are a separate input option.
- “Stream your own game” availability does not guarantee mouse-and-keyboard support.
- A title’s support can differ by cloud implementation, platform, region or catalog status.

What the feature does—and does not do
Cloud Gaming streams the Xbox version of a game. Mouse input does not turn that stream into a native Windows PC version. You may still see console menus, controller prompts, fewer key-binding options, different graphics settings and no PC-only mods or features. The game itself must support mouse and keyboard, and Microsoft must expose that support in its cloud version.

Support also does not remove streaming latency. Cursor aiming can make network delay more noticeable, and a premium mouse cannot compensate for an unstable connection or server-side delay. A reliable wired or strong 5 GHz/6 GHz Wi-Fi connection matters more than high polling rates or RGB hardware.
Does it work on Xbox consoles?
The original test covered Edge, Chrome and the Windows Xbox app; it did not establish mouse-and-keyboard cloud streaming on every Xbox console. Xbox separately supports wired USB mice and keyboards for navigation in selected games and apps, but connecting peripherals to a console does not guarantee cloud support for a particular title.

Troubleshooting

Choosing peripherals
You do not need specialist esports hardware for this feature. A basic wired USB keyboard and reliable wired mouse are the lowest-risk starting point because they avoid Bluetooth pairing, receiver, battery and device-switching problems. Choose for comfort, key noise, mouse shape and cable length. Expensive polling rates, macros and proprietary software add little if the browser or app receives only standard input events.
Wireless devices are convenient for laptops and shared desks, but introduce batteries, receivers, Bluetooth permissions and possible switching issues. Keep an Xbox Wireless Controller as a fallback for controller-only games and menus. What to check before subscribing or buying
- Your account has the required Xbox Cloud Gaming entitlement and, where applicable, preview access.
- Cloud Gaming is available on your device and in your region.
- Your chosen title is cloud-playable and currently lists mouse-and-keyboard support.
- The game does not require a controller for a specific menu or mode.
- Your network is stable enough for streamed input and video.
