What Epic Games Launcher cloud syncing does
Cloud Saves copies a supported game’s save data between the devices where you sign in to the same Epic Games account. It is useful when you change computers, reinstall a game, or play on a second machine, but it is not a universal backup system: support is enabled on a per-game basis, and an offline session can leave two devices with different local saves.

The launcher setting only controls whether Epic attempts to synchronize. A title must also implement Cloud Saves. If a game does not support the feature, no amount of launcher troubleshooting will make its local files appear in the cloud. Publisher guidance for CONTROL Resonant, for example, tells players to verify title support as well as the launcher setting.
Enable Cloud Saves
Standard Epic Games Launcher
- Open Epic Games Launcher.
- Open Settings from the launcher menu.
- Find the Cloud Saves section.
- Select the Enable Cloud Saves checkbox.
- Close Settings and allow the launcher to remain online long enough to synchronize.
After enabling the option, check the game’s own support information before interpreting a missing save as a launcher fault. If you use more than one computer, sign in to the same Epic account on each one and leave Cloud Saves enabled consistently.

The labels and location differ in Early Preview, but the requirement is the same: the feature must be enabled in the launcher and supported by the specific game.
Why cloud conflicts happen
Epic identifies playing on more than one device while one device was offline as a common cause. The offline device can continue writing a local save while the online device has already uploaded a different version. When the launcher reconnects, it cannot safely assume which file represents the progress you want, so it presents a conflict dialog.

Conflicts can also be created by changing the Cloud Saves setting while moving between machines. Epic warns that disabling and re-enabling the feature without first deciding which local copy is authoritative can produce additional conflicts. Treat the setting as a deliberate recovery control, not a switch to flip repeatedly.

Use the file’s recency and the device on which you made the progress as your decision criteria. Epic’s guidance is to select the newer file so the latest progress is retained. Selecting an older file can lose progress, and Epic warns that progress lost this way is not recoverable.

| Decision factor | What to check | Preferred choice |
|---|---|---|
| File recency | Compare the timestamps or dates shown for the local and cloud files. | The newer file, provided it contains the session you want. |
| Intended progress | Identify which device has the campaign, character, settings, or other work you intend to keep. | The copy on that device, even if you need to verify its date before choosing. |
| Offline play | Ask whether either device was played without an internet connection. | Usually the offline device’s newer local save, if that is where the latest progress was made. |
Before you click
- Stop launching the game on both devices until you have made the choice.
- Do not select an older file merely because it is labeled “cloud”; cloud status does not prove that it contains your latest session.
- If the timestamps are unclear, identify the last device and approximate time at which you played, then choose the file that matches that session.
- Once you select a file, allow synchronization to finish before opening the game elsewhere.
Fix Epic error CS-01 without discarding progress
Epic describes CS-01 as typically related to network configuration. Its documented recovery sequence creates a fresh local save, reconnects Cloud Saves, and then uploads that save when the conflict window appears. It is support guidance, not a guarantee for every title or network, so make a backup first when possible.
- Disable Cloud Saves. Open launcher Settings and turn off the Cloud Saves option.
- Launch the affected game. Play past the previous save point so the game has a distinct, newer state to write locally.
- Save and exit. Use the game’s normal save command, then quit the game completely.
- Re-enable Cloud Saves. Return to launcher Settings and turn the option back on.
- Launch the game again. Wait for the launcher to detect the local and cloud versions.
- Choose Upload in the conflict window. This sends the newly created local save to the cloud.
If the game does not reach a new save point, does not save normally, or never displays the conflict window, stop rather than repeatedly repeating the cycle. Preserve the local files and continue with the checks below.

Additional troubleshooting when syncing is stuck
Confirm the account and title support
Verify that the launcher is signed in to the Epic account that owns the game and that the game installation is associated with that account. Then confirm from the publisher’s support information that the title supports Cloud Saves. A correct setting cannot synchronize a game that lacks the feature.
Restart the launcher and game
Exit the game and restart Epic Games Launcher. A clean restart can clear a stalled synchronization session. Do not launch the game simultaneously on another device while the first device is still resolving its save state.

Check the network path
Confirm that the computer has a stable internet connection. If a VPN is active, temporarily disable it and try again; publisher troubleshooting guidance specifically recommends checking the network and temporarily disabling VPN software when syncing fails. Restore the VPN afterward if you need it for other activity, but test Cloud Saves on a connection that permits the launcher’s normal services.
Clear the Epic Launcher web cache
If the account, title support, restart, and connection checks do not help, clear the Epic Launcher web cache using the cache-clearing procedure for your operating system, then reopen the launcher and test synchronization again. Clearing cached launcher data can sign you out or reset temporary interface state, so have your Epic account credentials available.
Allow the operation to complete
Keep the launcher open while it uploads or downloads. Suspending the computer, terminating the launcher, or starting the game before the transfer finishes can leave the local and cloud copies out of step. If a conflict returns, use the recency and intended-progress checks rather than guessing.
Back up local saves before restoring or replacing files
Copy the game’s local save folder to a safe location such as a USB flash drive or another external storage device before restoring, replacing, or deleting anything. This separate copy gives you a rollback option if the chosen cloud file is not the one you expected.
- Exit the game and launcher so save files are not being written.
- Locate the game’s save folder using the title’s publisher support instructions or the game’s documented PC save location.
- Copy the entire folder, preserving its internal structure, to external storage.
- Label the backup with the game name and date, and keep it disconnected after the copy completes.
- Only then restore or replace the working save files.
- Temporarily disable Cloud Saves during the restore so the launcher does not overwrite the files while you are working.
- Start the game offline or with synchronization still disabled, verify that the restored progress loads, and exit normally.
- Re-enable Cloud Saves after verification and resolve any resulting conflict by selecting the verified, newer intended file.
Choosing backup media
| Criterion | What matters for game-save backups | Practical check |
|---|---|---|
| Capacity | Save folders are normally small, but capacity also determines whether you can keep multiple dated copies. | Choose enough space for several backups rather than only the current folder. |
| Read/write reliability | A backup is useful only if the copy completes and can be read later. | Safely eject the device and open a sample file or folder to confirm the copy. |
| Disconnected storage | A device left connected can be affected by accidental deletion or an unwanted overwrite. | Disconnect it after verifying the backup and store it separately. |
The available support guidance does not establish product benchmarks or prices for USB or external drives. The important safeguard is maintaining an independent copy before manipulating the active save.
Quick Recap
A reliable multi-device routine
Before switching computers
- Finish the game’s save operation and exit normally.
- Wait for the launcher’s synchronization to finish while online.
- Do not disable Cloud Saves just before moving to the other device.
When the second device is offline
- Understand that progress made offline will remain local until the device reconnects.
- Avoid playing the same title on another device in the meantime.
- When back online, let the launcher detect the difference and compare the files before choosing.
When you return online
- Reconnect to the internet before launching the game if possible.
- If a dialog appears, select the newer file that contains your intended progress.
- Wait for the upload or download to finish before starting another session.
Common mistakes and their consequences
| Mistake | Why it causes trouble | Safer alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Choosing the older file because it is labeled as cloud | The older copy may overwrite your latest session; Epic warns that the resulting lost progress is not recoverable. | Compare recency and intended progress first, then keep the newer file. |
| Repeatedly toggling Cloud Saves | Switching the feature during device changes can create more conflicts and makes the authoritative copy unclear. | Choose a source file, back it up, and use the documented CS-01 sequence only when needed. |
| Restoring files while Cloud Saves is active | The launcher may upload or download over the files you are trying to restore. | Disable Cloud Saves during the restore and re-enable after verification. |
| Launching on two devices during a conflict | Both sessions can write new local states before one version is selected. | Close the game on other devices until synchronization is settled. |
| Assuming every game supports Cloud Saves | The launcher cannot synchronize a title that has no Cloud Saves implementation. | Check the game publisher’s support information. |
