Announced on December 12, 2024, Epic Games’ long-term partnership with Telefónica was intended to put the Epic Games Store on new compatible Android devices sold through Telefónica in Spain, the United Kingdom, Germany and Spanish-speaking Latin America. It did not cover every Android phone, every Telefónica customer or smartphones worldwide. The companies described the potential reach as “millions” but did not give an exact device count. (Epic Games; Telefónica)
What Epic and Telefónica agreed to
Telefónica would distribute the Epic Games Store on new compatible Android devices sold through its network in the named markets. Telefónica’s consumer brands include O2 in the UK and Germany and Movistar in Spain and many Latin American markets. That does not mean every phone sold under those brands qualifies: the announcement specifies compatible Android devices, and the model, market and sales channel matter. (Telefónica Colombia)
Epic named Fortnite, Fall Guys and Rocket League Sideswipe as games available through the store, with third-party games planned for the future. The announcement concerned preinstalling the store; it did not say those games themselves would be preloaded onto every phone.
What “millions of smartphones” does—and does not—mean
“Millions” described the potential scale of Telefónica’s device distribution, not a confirmed count of phones already carrying the store. The arrangement was for new compatible devices, rather than a software update sent to existing customers’ phones. A UK government competition report explicitly cautioned that the deal should not be read as covering all 23 million O2 users. (UK government final decision report)

- Unspecified: the announcement did not give a precise number of qualifying devices or a guaranteed rollout date for every market.
“Preinstalled” means the store is made available on an eligible phone before delivery or during setup. It does not establish that the app cannot be removed, that every model gets it automatically, or that the Epic store replaces another marketplace.
Germany’s setup option
Epic’s December 20, 2024 update said O2 customers in Germany could choose to preinstall the store during smartphone setup. That is an opt-in setup choice, not evidence that every German O2 phone would receive a forced preload. (Epic Games announcement and update)

What Android users get—and how to install the store
The Epic Games Store is an alternative Android marketplace for browsing and downloading games. Epic’s Android page promotes mobile free-game offers and Epic Rewards, subject to the program’s terms; offers and availability can change. An Epic account lets players access Epic’s services, but having the store does not guarantee that every game will work on every device. (Epic Games Store for Android)
As of the information Epic published in August 2026, it offered direct Android installation worldwide, subject to legal restrictions. Its technical support page lists SDK 24 as the minimum, SDK 34 or later as recommended, and about 25 MB of storage. Another Epic download page lists Android 8/SDK 26 as the minimum, so Epic’s own pages do not agree on the baseline. These are store requirements, not a guarantee that a particular game will run; hardware, regional availability and device settings may impose further limits. - Go to Epic’s official Android download page and download the Epic Games Store app.
- If Android asks for permission to install apps from that source, approve the browser or file manager in system settings. The exact menu wording varies by manufacturer and Android version.
- Finish installing, open the store and sign in to your Epic account.
- Download a supported game from the store. If you do not expect to install more apps from that source, you can revoke its install permission in settings.
Use Epic’s site rather than an unfamiliar APK mirror. Installing directly may require an additional security permission, and work-managed devices may restrict app installation.
Do not confuse Epic’s two Android apps
The Epic Games Store app is the marketplace. Epic’s separate Epic Games app is a companion app for features such as Epic Authenticator and cross-platform text chat; it does not include the mobile store. (Epic Games app)

Does this replace Google Play?
No. The Telefónica arrangement adds an alternative store; it does not remove Google Play, make Epic the default marketplace on Android generally, or give Epic exclusivity on eligible phones. On Google-certified Android devices, users can continue to use Google Play alongside other available ways to get apps.
The distribution advantage is visibility and convenience: a store already on a phone—or offered during setup—can be easier to find than one a user must install directly. Android installations from outside Google Play can involve additional permissions, though the specific steps depend on the device. Samsung phones may also have security controls such as Auto Blocker. Samsung presents these as security protections; Epic has criticized the feature in its competition arguments, so their competing characterizations should not be mistaken for a settled finding. Why Epic wants a place on the phone
Preinstallation can put Epic’s store in front of players when they first set up a device, making it easier to reach Fortnite players and attract people to other games. It also gives Epic a more direct route to distribute games, promote its store and payment arrangements, and introduce third-party developers to a larger audience. Those are strategic aims, not proof that the store will displace Google Play.
Epic has argued in legal filings that Android’s installation hurdles make alternative stores harder for ordinary users to adopt. Its filings describe a competitive landscape that includes Google Play, Samsung’s Galaxy Store, Amazon Appstore, Aptoide, Epic Games Store and direct downloads. Those are Epic’s advocacy claims, not neutral legal findings. (Epic’s amended complaint against Samsung)
A UK government competition report later cited the Telefónica arrangement as an example of an alternative store securing preinstallation, while emphasizing that it applied to new compatible Telefónica Android devices. The deal illustrates one way an alternative marketplace can gain distribution; it does not by itself resolve Epic’s disputes with Google or establish a change in Android’s overall app-store balance. (UK government investigation document)
What about iPhone and iPad?
The Telefónica deal is for Android, not Apple devices. Epic’s mobile availability page, as listed in August 2026, showed the Epic Games Store on Android worldwide subject to legal restrictions, while iPhone and iPad availability was limited by region: the European Union and Japan for iPhone, and the European Union for iPad. Epic listed a Brazil expansion for later in 2026. Those platform and regional details are separate from the Telefónica agreement and may change. (Epic mobile availability)

The partnership gave Epic a meaningful route to reach some Android buyers without asking each one to find and install the store from scratch. Its significance lies in that distribution foothold, not in a universal change to Android: the deal was geographically limited, applied to new compatible devices, and left Google Play in place. Whether preinstallation leads users to adopt another store depends on device eligibility, setup choices, user interest and the games and services available there.
