epndrv01.dll is an Epson application file, not a Windows system DLL. It is associated with EPNDRV01, the EPSON Color Printing Plugin, developed by SEIKO EPSON CORP.
The safest fix is to identify the Epson printer software that is calling the file, then repair or reinstall that complete package for the exact printer model. Do not download epndrv01.dll from a random DLL archive or copy it into System32.

What epndrv01.dll is
| Detail | Identification |
|---|---|
| Filename | epndrv01.dll |
| Internal name | EPNDRV01 |
| Component | EPSON Color Printing Plugin |
| Publisher | SEIKO EPSON CORP. |
| File category | Third-party application component |
| Windows ownership | Not a standard Windows DLL |
| Likely architecture | Public metadata describes it as a Win32, 32-bit component |
Public file records disagree about the DLL’s version and size, so those catalog values should not be used to select a replacement file. Epson also distributes printer software by product model rather than through a universal standalone download for this DLL.

What the error means
You may see messages such as:
epndrv01.dll was not foundThe file epndrv01.dll is missing or corruptedEPNDRV01.DLL cannot be locatedEPNDRV01.DLL cannot be loadedApplication could not be started because EPNDRV01.DLL is missing
These messages mean that a program tried to load the Epson component and Windows could not find or use it. They do not identify the exact Epson product by themselves.
The problem commonly begins after:
- An Epson printer was uninstalled incompletely
- A printer driver update failed
- Epson software was moved or deleted
- Antivirus software quarantined the file
- Disk cleanup removed part of an old Epson installation
- A system image was restored
- A printer package was installed for the wrong model or architecture
- An Epson startup item or scheduled task remained after removal
The error may appear during printer setup, while printing, when opening Epson photo software, or during Windows startup.
First, identify the program calling the DLL
Do this before reinstalling software. It prevents you from repairing the wrong Epson package.
Check the complete error path
If the error dialog includes a path, write it down. A path inside an Epson program folder points to the application that owns the missing dependency.
A path under a printer utility, scanning application, photo application, or vendor-specific Epson folder can identify the affected package. A message that only names epndrv01.dll is not enough to establish the exact product.
Do not assume that the current printer is responsible. Several Epson packages can remain installed for different printers.
Review installed Epson applications
On Windows 11:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for
Epson. - Expand the menu beside each relevant program.
- Record the names of printer utilities, drivers, scanners, and printing plugins.
On Windows 10:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Apps & features.
- Search for Epson software.
- Record each installed Epson program and its associated printer.
Also check Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features. Older Epson packages may appear there even when they do not provide a modern Settings repair option.
Check startup and reliability history
If the message appears immediately after signing in:
- Press
Ctrl + Shift + Escto open Task Manager. - Select Startup apps.
- Look for Epson entries.
- Note the name, but do not disable or delete entries until you know which Epson package they belong to.
For more detail:
- Open Start and search for Reliability History.
- Select View reliability history.
- Look for failures beginning when the DLL error started.
- Open the relevant event and record the failing application.
You can also inspect Event Viewer:
- Right-click Start and select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs > Application.
- Look for an error at the time of the failure.
- Record the application name and faulting module.
Check Windows Security Protection History
Windows Security may have quarantined the file:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an Epson file or an event involving the program that produces the error.
Do not restore the file automatically. Restore it only when it came from a legitimate Epson installation and a current security scan gives you confidence that it is safe. Microsoft notes that Defender may detect a restored file again, and allowing a quarantined file requires confidence that it is not malicious. See Microsoft’s Protection History guidance.
Fix 1: Repair the installed Epson program

- Restart Windows and test the printer or application.
If there is no Repair option:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Right-click the Epson program.
- Choose Repair or Change.
- Complete the Epson maintenance wizard.
- Restart Windows.
How to tell whether repair worked
Repair succeeded if:
- The original Epson program opens without the DLL message
- Printing completes normally
- The startup error no longer appears
- The application can find the printer again
If the same error appears, or the Epson entry has no repair option, continue with a complete reinstall.
Fix 2: Reinstall the complete Epson package
This is the most likely permanent fix for a missing or damaged epndrv01.dll.
Use Epson’s official support site and search by the exact printer model. Do not search only for epndrv01.dll. Download the current Windows printer driver or software package listed for that model and your version of Windows.
Remove the damaged package
- Disconnect the printer’s USB cable if it is connected.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Uninstall the Epson printer software, utilities, and plugins associated with the affected printer.
- If an Epson entry is also listed in Control Panel > Programs and Features, remove it there too.
- Restart Windows.
If the package refuses to uninstall, use Microsoft’s guidance for programs that cannot be installed or removed.

- Return to Epson’s official product support page.
- Search for the exact printer model printed on the device.
- Select the correct Windows version and architecture when offered.
- Download the complete printer driver or software package.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Follow the installer instructions.
- Connect or power on the printer only when the installer requests it.
- Restart Windows after installation.
Test from the Epson application first, then print a Windows test page.
If the package installs successfully but the same error returns, confirm that you selected the exact model. A similar Epson model may use a different utility or plugin.
Fix 3: Update or reinstall the printer driver through Windows
Windows may be using a damaged or incomplete printer driver even when Epson software appears installed.
Update from Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, and, if present, Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Right-click the Epson printer.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.
If Windows finds no useful update, use the model-specific Epson package instead. Windows Update does not always install the vendor’s complete utilities and plugins.

Manually comparing driver packages, architectures, and printer models can be tedious when several Epson devices have been installed. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan shows what it finds, while the full version handles driver installation. Reinstalling the correct Epson package remains the definitive fix when epndrv01.dll belongs to a specific Epson application.
Remove and reinstall the device
If Device Manager shows an error symbol:
- Right-click the Epson printer.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers to remove the driver package, select that option only when you are sure it belongs to the affected Epson printer.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the exact Epson package from the manufacturer’s support page.
Do not remove unrelated printers or generic Microsoft print components while troubleshooting this file.
Fix 4: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Public metadata describes epndrv01.dll as a Win32, 32-bit Epson component. That does not mean you should copy it into a Windows system folder.
A 32-bit Epson application normally loads its own 32-bit dependencies from its application directory or an associated vendor directory. A 64-bit replacement DLL is not interchangeable. The reverse is also true.
To check Windows architecture:
- Open Start > Settings > System > About.
- Read System type.
- Note whether Windows is 64-bit or 32-bit.
Then check the Epson download page for the exact printer model and Windows architecture. If the installer offers separate packages, choose the one matching your system and the Epson application’s requirements.
If the printer is old, the vendor may provide only an older 32-bit utility. That is a reason to use the complete supported package, not to mix individual DLL files from different sources.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine before restoring anything
If Windows Security shows that the file was quarantined:
- Confirm the detection’s file path.
- Compare that path with the Epson installation you identified.
- Run a current Windows Security scan.
- Update the Epson package from its official support source if a clean installer is available.
Restore the quarantined file only when you can verify that it came from a legitimate Epson installation and the scan does not indicate malicious behavior. If the file is detected again, do not repeatedly whitelist it. Remove the old package and reinstall it from the official Epson installer.
A filename containing Epson is not proof that the file is safe. The file’s location, publisher information, installation source, and security results all matter.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
epndrv01.dll is not identified as a protected Windows component, so Windows repair commands are not the primary fix. Use them when other Windows files are also failing, Windows Update is damaged, or system corruption began at the same time.
Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run these commands in order:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
Wait for each command to finish before starting the next one. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. These commands repair Windows component and protected system-file problems; they do not recreate a missing Epson application file.

- Archival photos last more than 200 years in an album
- Sharp text
- Use with Epson Premium XP-530, XP-630, XP-830
Success means DISM completes without an unrepaired error and SFC reports that it repaired corruption or found no integrity violations. Restart Windows and test again.
If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, restart and run the commands again. If the Epson error remains unchanged while other Windows functions work normally, return to the Epson repair or reinstall procedure.
Repeating DISM and SFC without knowing whether Windows itself is damaged can waste time. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader system issues; its free scan identifies what it finds, while repair is handled by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the Epson program remains the definitive fix for this third-party DLL.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 7: Use System Restore only for a recent change
System Restore is appropriate when the error started immediately after a driver installation, software update, or other system change and a restore point exists from before the failure.
- Press
Win + R. - Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the changes.
- Start the restore if the affected programs and drivers are acceptable.
- Restart Windows and test the Epson software.
System Restore does not replace a complete Epson installer, and it may remove a recently installed driver or application. Microsoft’s System Restore documentation explains the process and limitations.
What not to do
Do not download the DLL from a random website
Standalone DLL archives can provide:
- The wrong version
- The wrong architecture
- A file intended for a different Epson package
- A file that is digitally unverifiable
- A modified or malicious file
Even when the copied DLL removes the first message, the application may still fail because its other files, registry entries, services, or dependencies are missing.
Use Epson’s official product support site for the printer software and Microsoft’s official pages for Windows repair procedures.
Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64
Those folders are not general-purpose storage for application DLLs. Copying an Epson component into them can create path conflicts and make future troubleshooting harder.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not run regsvr32 as a default fix
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A missing application dependency is not repaired by registering it.
For example, this is not a valid default solution:
regsvr32 epndrv01.dll
It may produce an error such as DllRegisterServer was not found, or it may register a component without fixing the application that called it. Only use regsvr32 when the software vendor’s instructions specifically identify that DLL as a self-registering component and provide the correct path and command.
Do not use registry cleaners
A registry cleaner cannot reconstruct a missing Epson installation. It may remove references that are still needed or make the remaining problem harder to diagnose.

Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET blindly
There is no verified evidence that epndrv01.dll belongs to Microsoft Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET. Install one of those runtimes only if the actual error names a separate missing runtime file or the Epson installer explicitly requires it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf you no longer use the Epson printer
If the printer is obsolete, you do not need to restore the DLL merely to silence an orphaned startup entry.
- Uninstall the Epson applications associated with the old printer.
- Remove the old printer from Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Check Task Manager > Startup apps for a clearly identified Epson entry.
- Disable the obsolete entry.
- Check Reliability History after restarting.
Do not delete arbitrary registry values or scheduled tasks unless you can identify the Epson program that created them. If the error continues, reinstalling the old Epson package temporarily may expose the correct uninstaller or allow you to remove the orphaned component cleanly.
FAQ
Is epndrv01.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with the Epson EPSON Color Printing Plugin and is published under SEIKO EPSON CORP. It is not a standard Windows component.
Is epndrv01.dll safe?
The filename alone does not prove safety. A legitimate copy should come from an Epson installation and should match the expected application path. Check Windows Security and avoid files obtained from unofficial DLL archives.
Which Epson printer installed it?
There is no verified universal printer-model mapping for this filename. Identify the calling executable and inspect installed Epson applications, then reinstall the package for the exact printer model.
Will SFC repair it?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while epndrv01.dll is an Epson application component. Use SFC when Windows itself may be corrupted, but repair or reinstall the Epson package first.
Should I install a Visual C++ Redistributable?
Not as a first step. Microsoft Visual C++ packages provide Microsoft runtime libraries, not Epson’s proprietary DLL. Install a runtime only when another error or the Epson installer specifically requires it.
Should I register the DLL with regsvr32?
No, not by default. A missing Epson dependency is not fixed by registration, and this command may report that the DLL has no registration entry point.
