The Epson message “Non-printing features are available” is a hardware-service warning, not a normal low-ink notification. Epson’s status guidance says the product may be damaged, printing is unavailable, and functions such as scanning may still work. Stop sending print jobs, preserve any queued work, use only the non-printing function that your model confirms is working, and contact Epson support or an authorised Epson service provider. The precise failed component and the functions that remain available depend on the model.
What the Epson message means
Epson uses this wording when its printer detects a condition serious enough to disable printing while leaving at least some other functions available. In Epson’s Product Status Messages guidance, the explanation is: “The product may be damaged, but features such as scanning are still available. Contact Epson for support.” A guide for the WF-7820 and WF-7840 gives the same practical interpretation: “The printer may be damaged. Contact Epson for support. Non-printing features such as scanning are still available.”

That makes this a potential hardware-fault or service message, not an instruction to replace an empty cartridge. The wording can appear across several WorkForce and business-printer families, but it does not identify one universal failed part. A mechanical, electrical or other model-specific fault could be involved; Epson’s published message does not establish which one for every printer.
The word “code” in searches can be misleading. Some models may show an additional numeric code, but the quoted status itself is the important information. Epson’s documentation does not provide one reset sequence or one repair for every model carrying this message.

What to do first
- Stop trying to print. Repeatedly resubmitting documents will not restore a print mechanism that the printer has disabled and can make the queue harder to sort out.
- Save your queued work. Keep the original files and note which jobs were waiting when the warning appeared. Do not assume a job that looks complete actually printed.
- Check the functions shown as available on the printer’s display or in its software. Scanning is the example Epson explicitly identifies. Do not assume that copying, faxing or another function works merely because scanning does.
- Use a confirmed working non-printing function only if you need continuity. If scanning responds normally, save the resulting files to your usual destination and verify that each file opens. If the scanner also fails, stop using the unit and record that symptom for support.
- Contact Epson support. Epson’s M15180 guide directs owners to Epson support or an authorised Epson service provider to request repairs. The WF-4830/WF-4820 guide gives the same direction.
A power cycle may be suggested by a support representative for your specific model, but the cited Epson guidance does not publish a universal reset procedure for this message. Do not treat an unsourced reset combination as a repair.
Which functions might still work?
“Non-printing features” is deliberately broader than “scanner.” Epson specifically names scanning, while the remaining functions vary by model and by the fault detected. Treat the table below as a decision guide, not a guarantee.

If scanning is your immediate need, make a small test scan first. Confirm that the preview appears, the scan completes without another error, and the saved file can be opened. This verifies the function without assuming that the printer has recovered.

The same wording appears in documentation for different Epson families, including WorkForce multifunction models and business printers. A status table can therefore describe the consequence—printing is disabled because the product may be damaged—without naming a common part that owners can replace themselves.
WF-7820 and WF-7840
The user guide for these models states that the printer may be damaged, directs the owner to Epson support, and says that non-printing features such as scanning remain available. It does not turn the message into an ink or paper-maintenance warning.
M15180
The M15180 guide gives a more specific service route: contact Epson support or an authorised Epson service provider to request repairs. It again says that non-printing features such as scanning are available. The wording supports using a working scanner while arranging service; it does not identify a universal replacement part.
WF-4830 and WF-4820
The guide for these models also directs owners toward Epson support or service. Because the exact internal condition is model-dependent, instructions for another WorkForce model should not be applied automatically.

What information to give Epson
Support can narrow the diagnosis more quickly when the report contains the complete context rather than only the phrase “non-printing features.” Prepare the following before contacting Epson:
- The exact model designation, including the regional suffix if it appears on the label or display.
- The message exactly as shown, including capitalization, punctuation and any additional text.
- Every numeric error code displayed alongside the message.
- What happened immediately before the warning: for example, a print attempt, a paper movement, a power event or another on-screen error. Report only what you observed.
- Whether the printer starts normally, whether the display responds, and which non-printing functions you tested.
- Whether a scan completed and where its output was saved, if scanning still works.
- Any jobs that were in the queue and whether the computer or mobile device reported them as completed.
Keep the model’s user guide available during the call or service request. Epson’s own guides are the controlling source for model-specific procedures, warnings and service eligibility.
Actions that can waste time or money
There is no Epson-documented universal remedy in this message for a cartridge, printhead cleaner, waste-ink pad, maintenance box, paper-jam tool or generic repair kit. Buying one of those items before the model and failed component are confirmed risks treating the wrong problem.
Do not assume it is an ink warning
An ink warning normally identifies ink status. This message instead says that the product may be damaged and that printing is unavailable. Replacing cartridges without a confirmed ink-related message does not address that documented condition.
Do not force a print through another device
Changing drivers, resubmitting from another computer or repeatedly restarting the print application cannot establish that the printer’s disabled print hardware is safe to use. Preserve the files and move to the support route.
Do not open the printer without model-specific instructions
Because Epson does not identify one failed part for all models, disassembly can create additional damage or remove information a service technician needs. Use an authorised service provider when Epson directs you to do so.

The scanner works and you need documents now
Use scanning only for the immediate task. Test one page, check the resulting file, and preserve the original paper or digital source. Keep the printer out of print workflows while the warning remains. A successful scan demonstrates that scanning is available; it does not demonstrate that printing has been repaired.

The scanner works but copying is essential
Copying generally combines scanning with a print step. Since Epson only promises that non-printing functions such as scanning may remain available, do not infer that a copy will complete. Scan to a file and use another confirmed-working printer for the output, or ask Epson whether copying is supported on your exact model while the warning is present.

The scanner, display or controls also fail
Record the additional symptom, stop operating the unit, and include it in your support request. The general message does not tell you whether the wider failure is related to the same component, so avoid diagnosing it from the wording alone.
The warning disappears after a restart
Note that it disappeared, when it returned, and what operation preceded each occurrence. Do not assume that a temporary disappearance proves the hardware is healthy. Epson’s documentation still treats the message as a possible damage condition and directs owners to support.
How to read the message in plain language
Three conclusions are justified by Epson’s wording. First, the print function should be treated as unavailable while the status is present. Second, scanning is an example of a function that may continue to operate. Third, the printer may be damaged, so the proper remedy is a model-specific support or service assessment rather than an unverified consumable purchase.
Those conclusions apply more safely than a generic online reset recipe because Epson documents the message across multiple model families. The exact cause, the list of remaining functions and the repair decision must come from the guide and service path for your printer.

Return the printer to normal print use only after Epson support or an authorised service provider has cleared the condition, or after a model-specific procedure has explicitly confirmed that the fault is resolved. Before sending an important job, run the test Epson or the service provider specifies and verify the output. Keep the original error details with your records in case the status returns.
