Erista vs. Mariko: What’s Different in the Nintendo Switch?

Erista is the original standard Switch and Mariko the revised version. Check the model number—HAC-001 or HAC-001(-01)—to tell them apart; Nintendo estimates longer battery life for the revision.

Erista and Mariko are common names for the original and revised standard Nintendo Switch hardware. The easiest way to tell them apart is the model number: the original is HAC-001; the revised model is HAC-001(-01). Nintendo’s estimated battery life is longer for the revision, but the two models use the same battery according to iFixit’s teardown.

What is the difference between Erista and Mariko?

The main practical difference is battery life. Nintendo estimates 2.5–6.5 hours for the earlier HAC-001 and 4.5–9 hours for the revised HAC-001(-01). The revision’s longer runtime is attributed to more efficient internal components, not a larger battery.

“Erista” and “Mariko” are commonly used hardware codenames; Nintendo identifies these standard Switch models by their HAC numbers rather than those names. Nintendo’s support page lists the following distinctions:

Nintendo says actual battery duration varies with the model, software, and functions in use. The ranges are estimates for each model, not guaranteed playtime for every game or every used console. Nintendo’s battery-life and model guidance

How do I tell if my Switch is Erista or Mariko?

Check the model marking on the console itself. HAC-001 identifies the earlier standard model; HAC-001(-01), including the “(-01),” identifies the revised model. Nintendo also associates serial numbers beginning XAW with HAC-001 and XKW with HAC-001(-01). These prefixes are a useful secondary check, but the console’s model marking is the direct identifier.

When buying second-hand, ask to see the marking on the console rather than relying only on the listing or box description. A serial prefix can help confirm the model, while battery runtime alone cannot reliably identify it.

Why does the revised Switch last longer?

In an August 19, 2019 teardown, iFixit reported a new CPU and updated memory chips in the revised Switch, and said those changes improve efficiency and battery life. The teardown found the same battery in both versions, so the runtime difference is not due to a larger battery.

iFixit described the updated component as Tegra X1-based and said it was “pretty sure” it was a Nintendo variant of T210B01; its identification of a 16 nm process was conditional. Those details are teardown-era analysis, not official Nintendo chip specifications. iFixit’s 2019 Nintendo Switch teardown

Does Mariko mean the Switch OLED model?

No. HAC-001(-01) is the revised standard Switch, which still has an LCD screen. Nintendo lists it with a 6.2-inch display and 32 GB of system memory. The OLED Switch is a separate model, HEG-001, with a 7-inch OLED display and 64 GB of system memory. Nintendo lists both HAC-001(-01) and HEG-001 with an estimated battery life of 4.5–9 hours. What to know about battery condition on a used Switch

A revised model’s higher published estimate does not tell you the condition of a particular used console. Nintendo says lithium-ion battery capacity declines with use. Its general guidance estimates that after about 800 charge cycles, a console battery will have about 80% of the capacity of a new one. That figure is not a way to determine an individual console’s cycle count or remaining capacity.
