Ernest Gary “Ernie” Gygax Jr., an early Dungeons & Dragons player and playtester whose first character, Tenser, became part of the game’s lore, died on February 27, 2025, according to reporting published the next day. He helped shape the game’s formative playtesting, but the available accounts distinguish that role from D&D’s co-creation, attributed to his father Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson.
When did Ernie Gygax Jr. die?
James Whitbrook reported for Gizmodo on February 28, 2025, that Gygax had “passed away last night,” placing his death on February 27. Whitbrook said Gygax’s brother Luke confirmed the news on Facebook. A friend’s memorial, published the same day, also reported his death.
Whitbrook described Gygax as having battled health problems. The contemporaneous accounts cited here do not establish a specific medical cause of death.
How did Ernie Gygax help shape early D&D?
Gygax was among the early players and playtesters, not one of the two people credited with co-creating Dungeons & Dragons. In his 2013 first-person account, he recalled his father asking him for input and having him help arrange playtest sessions. He said he took part in the first playtest with his sister Elise and Rob Kuntz, followed by other gamers.

“Often, he would bounce ideas off of me, or play-test some of his most recent inventions,” Gygax wrote in the Gygax Magazine #2 sample. That firsthand account describes a practical role in trying out and discussing early ideas; it does not make him a co-creator.
Was Tenser based on Ernie Gygax?
Tenser was Gygax’s first D&D player character, and the name is an anagram of Ernest. The character entered Greyhawk lore and lent his name to spells including Tenser’s Floating Disk and Tenser’s Transformation, as Gizmodo’s report notes. The 2024 Player’s Handbook also connects the character to the game’s continuing presentation of its world and history.

An A.N.D. Magazine profile credits Gygax with more specific mechanical contributions, including Cone of Cold’s level and Haste’s aging effect. Those detailed attributions are claims made by that profile rather than an independently established official credit record.
What did Gygax do after D&D’s early playtests?
Gygax’s later work continued in tabletop role-playing and publishing. Whitbrook’s account reports that he was the first manager of the Dungeon Hobby Shop in Lake Geneva, later published Gygax Magazine with his brother Luke, and helped establish a later TSR venture with Justin LaNasa and Stephen Dinehart.

In a February 28, 2025, Sanctum Secorum memorial, writer Gatekeeper recalled Gygax’s proposed Hobby Shop Dungeon and Crossroads to Adventure work, and said the planned books were never published. The memorial also recounts the writer’s personal memories of Gygax’s final hospitalization and conversations; those are the writer’s recollections, not an official family account.

In October 2024, a press release from the 50 Years of Fantasy project announced an interview with Gygax about D&D’s early history. It quoted him saying, “It’s an honor to share my father’s story and the early history of Dungeons & Dragons with ’50 Years of Fantasy.’” The announcement documents the planned interview, but does not establish the project’s current availability.
