Error 0X8700017: Fix the Xbox App Not Downloading on Windows

By VGSources Team 7 min read

Error 0X8700017 is an Xbox app or Microsoft Store download/install failure, not a code with a publicly documented single cause. The most reliable fix is to work through Microsoft’s supported recovery path in order: confirm the Microsoft Store session, update the Store and Windows, reset the Store cache, repair the Xbox app, then repair Gaming Services. Use Reset only after Repair fails, and escalate to Microsoft’s Gaming Services repair or reinstall procedure if the dependency still will not install.

You do not need a controller, console accessory, or other physical product to resolve this error. The failure occurs in Windows software delivery or in the Gaming Services dependency used by the Xbox app.

What error 0X8700017 means—and what it does not tell you

The code appears when the Xbox app or Microsoft Store cannot complete a download or installation. Microsoft’s published troubleshooting material covers the surrounding Store, Windows, app-package, and Gaming Services failures, but it does not publish a unique root-cause definition or prevalence statistic for 0X8700017 itself. Treat the code as a symptom that identifies the failed operation, not as proof of one particular corrupted file or account problem.

That distinction matters because several layers participate in an Xbox app installation. The Store account authorizes the transaction and delivers the package; Windows Update supplies current servicing components; the Xbox app maintains its own local state; and Gaming Services provides a shared Windows dependency. A failure at any of those layers can present as the same download error. The sequence below starts with the least disruptive checks and moves toward dependency recovery only when earlier steps do not work.

1. Confirm the Microsoft Store account and update state

Begin in the Microsoft Store, even if you normally launch downloads from the Xbox app. Store sign-in and update checks are part of Microsoft’s app-install troubleshooting flow, and the account used here should be the one intended for Xbox use.

  1. Open Microsoft Store from the Windows Start menu.
  2. Select the account icon and sign in with the Microsoft account you intend to use with Xbox. If another account is shown, switch to the correct one before retrying.
  3. Open Library and check for available app updates. Allow Store updates to finish.
  4. Search for the official Xbox app listing in Microsoft Store and start the installation from that listing.

If the download now starts, the problem was confined to the Store session or its update state. If the same code returns, continue without repeatedly clicking Install; the next step refreshes the Store’s local cache.

2. Reset the Microsoft Store cache

A stale or damaged Store cache can prevent a package request from being created or completed. Microsoft documents a built-in Store-cache reset rather than requiring registry edits or a replacement installer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.
  2. Enter wsreset.exe and press Enter. Allow the cache-reset process to finish; a command window may appear briefly before Microsoft Store opens again.
  3. When Store is available, verify that the intended Microsoft account is still signed in.
  4. Open the official Xbox app listing and try the download once more.

The cache reset does not replace the Xbox app and does not remove your Windows account. It refreshes Store delivery data, so it is an appropriate step before changing the Xbox app’s own state.

3. Install pending Windows updates and restart

Store-delivered applications depend on Windows servicing components. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance therefore places Windows Update and a restart in the recovery path. An update that is downloaded but waiting for a reboot can leave the Store and its dependencies in an inconsistent state.

  1. Open Settings > Windows Update.
  2. Select Check for updates and install the updates Windows offers.
  3. Restart Windows after installation, even if the Store itself did not request a restart.
  4. After signing back in, open Microsoft Store and retry the official Xbox app listing.

Do not judge the result until the restart has completed. If Windows reports that it is up to date and the code remains, move to the Xbox app’s Advanced options.

4. Repair the Xbox app without deleting its state

Repair is the lower-impact app recovery option. It attempts to correct the installed Xbox package while preserving the app’s local state. Use it before Reset whenever the button is available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Find Xbox in the list. Use the search box if necessary.
  3. Open the Xbox entry’s menu, choose Advanced options, and select Repair.
  4. Wait for Windows to complete the operation, then reopen Microsoft Store or Xbox and retry the download.

Repair is intended for an app that is present but cannot update, launch, or complete an operation. It does not address every Gaming Services failure, so a continuing 0X8700017 result is a reason to check that dependency rather than repeatedly running Repair.

5. Reset the Xbox app only if Repair fails

Reset is more disruptive than Repair because it clears the Xbox app’s local state. Microsoft includes it as the next step when Repair does not resolve the problem.

  1. Return to Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Xbox > Advanced options.
  2. Select Reset and confirm the warning.
  3. Open the Xbox app or Microsoft Store and sign in again if Windows asks for your account.
  4. Start the Xbox app installation from the official Microsoft Store listing.

Reset does not mean that a physical Xbox device or game library has been erased; it resets the Windows app’s stored state. The practical consequence is that the app may forget its sign-in session and preferences, which is why the account check should be repeated after the operation.

6. Repair or reset Gaming Services

Gaming Services is a Windows component used by Xbox. If the Xbox app itself repairs successfully but installation still stops, this shared dependency is the next supported target.

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Search for Gaming Services, open its menu, and choose Advanced options.
  3. Select Repair first and wait for Windows to finish.
  4. Retry the Xbox app installation from Microsoft Store.
  5. If Gaming Services Repair does not help, return to the same screen and choose Reset, then retry the installation.

Keep the order deliberate: repairing Gaming Services preserves more state, while resetting it clears that component’s local data. A successful Xbox-app Repair does not prove that Gaming Services is healthy, because the two entries have separate Advanced options.

7. Escalate with Microsoft’s Gaming Services recovery procedure

If the Store cache, Windows restart, Xbox Repair/Reset, and Gaming Services Repair/Reset have not restored downloads, use Microsoft’s own Gaming Services Repair Tool or Microsoft’s documented Gaming Services reinstall procedure. These are the supported escalation paths for a dependency that will not install or register correctly.

  1. Run the Microsoft-provided Gaming Services repair or reinstall procedure for your Windows installation.
  2. Allow the procedure to finish rather than cancelling a package-removal or re-registration step.
  3. Restart Windows after the procedure, even if no restart prompt appears.
  4. Open Microsoft Store, confirm the intended account, and reinstall the Xbox app from its official Store listing.

Avoid repacked Xbox installers, unofficial download mirrors, and unverified registry scripts. They can change package provenance, update integrity, and supportability while leaving the underlying Gaming Services problem unresolved. Microsoft-hosted recovery keeps the package source and update chain consistent.

Choosing the right recovery step

Situation Preferred action Impact and expectation
Store opens, but the Xbox download fails or does not begin Check Store sign-in and Library updates, then reset the Store cache Refreshes delivery and session data without changing Xbox app state
The Xbox app is installed but behaves incorrectly Xbox app Repair Lower-impact correction that attempts to preserve local app state
Xbox Repair does not change the result Xbox app Reset Clears app state; signing in again may be required
Xbox installation still fails after app recovery Gaming Services Repair Targets the shared Windows dependency used by Xbox
Gaming Services Repair fails Gaming Services Reset, then Microsoft’s repair or reinstall procedure Progressively stronger dependency recovery, followed by a Windows restart
A third-party installer or registry script is suggested Do not use it; return to Microsoft’s Store and Gaming Services procedures Preserves official package provenance and supportability

How to interpret the result after each attempt

The error appears immediately when you select Install

Start with the Store account, Library updates, and cache reset. An immediate failure points first to the Store delivery layer, so changing Xbox app state before refreshing Store is unnecessarily disruptive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Store download starts, then stops during installation

Complete Windows Update and restart before trying again. If the failure persists, use Xbox Repair and then inspect Gaming Services. This pattern is consistent with a package or dependency state problem, but Microsoft has not assigned 0X8700017 a single confirmed cause.

Xbox Repair completes but Gaming Services will not install

Use Gaming Services Advanced options separately. Repair it, retry, and use Reset only if Repair fails. The Xbox app and Gaming Services are separate installed entries, so repairing one does not repair the other.

The error returns after Gaming Services Reset

Do not keep repeating the same Reset. Restart Windows, then use Microsoft’s Gaming Services Repair Tool or documented reinstall procedure and reinstall Xbox from Microsoft Store afterward.

You are asked to buy hardware

Decline that detour. A controller, console accessory, storage device, or other physical product does not repair a Microsoft Store cache, Windows app state, or Gaming Services registration. The supported remedy is software recovery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to stop troubleshooting and contact Microsoft

If the official Store listing still fails after the full sequence, record the point at which it fails: Store sign-in, cache reset, Windows restart, Xbox Repair or Reset, Gaming Services recovery, or the final reinstall. Also note whether the failure occurs before any download begins or while installation is registering. That information distinguishes a Store-delivery symptom from a dependency-recovery failure when you seek Microsoft support.

Because Microsoft does not publish a unique definition for 0X8700017, a persistent error is not evidence that one hidden registry value or one physical component must be replaced. Keep the troubleshooting within Microsoft’s documented Store, Windows, Xbox, and Gaming Services paths.
