“An error occurred while unpacking: does not match checksum” means the unpacker calculated different bytes from the checksum or CRC stored with the archive. The first fix is to preserve the original file, download it again from the publisher’s trusted source, and verify its published hash if one is available. Only after the download is proven good should you investigate the destination drive or Windows itself.
What the checksum error actually means
A checksum is an integrity value calculated from a file’s contents. An archive or installer stores an expected value, then the unpacker calculates a new value while reading or extracting the data. If the two values differ, extraction stops because the output cannot be trusted.

Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance describes “does not match checksum” as extracted data that does not match the expected value. In practice, the archive is usually damaged, incomplete, or changed between download and extraction. The same condition may be reported as “Unarc.dll returned an error code: -12” or “failed CRC check.” Those messages identify an integrity failure; they do not prove that one particular hardware component is defective.

What usually causes it
A damaged or incomplete download
A transfer can finish with a success notification while still containing altered or missing bytes. An interrupted connection, a bad mirror, or a corrupted source copy can all produce a file that opens but fails when a later archive member is unpacked. Because the available evidence most directly supports a bad download, this is the first possibility to eliminate.

Errors on the destination volume
If a fresh copy repeatedly fails while being read or written, the volume that stores the installer, temporary extraction files, or destination may have logical file-system errors or physical disk problems. A checksum failure alone cannot tell you whether the source file or the storage path is at fault.
Windows component or protected-file corruption
Unpacking software depends on Windows components and protected system files. If other applications also show unexplained corruption, crashes, or missing system files, repair Windows with DISM and then System File Checker. These tools address Windows corruption; they do not repair a bad archive.
Things the message does not prove
Repeated failures can justify testing memory, storage hardware, or other system conditions, but the error by itself does not establish that RAM, processor temperature, antivirus software, or the page file is responsible. Treat those as hypotheses only after the file has been re-downloaded and the built-in checks have been performed.
Follow this repair order
Change one variable at a time. This preserves useful evidence and prevents a speculative tweak from hiding the real cause.
1. Preserve the evidence
- Write down the exact archive or installer filename.
- Record the percentage at which extraction stops and the complete text of any Unarc.dll or CRC message.
- Keep the original download unchanged while diagnosing. Copy it to another location if you need a working copy; do not overwrite the only copy with a partial download.
The failing percentage and member name can show whether every attempt stops at the same point. That observation becomes important if a verified replacement still fails.

2. Download a clean copy from the original source
Obtain the installer or archive again from the software publisher’s trusted download page. Use the official source when one exists rather than relying on an unofficial mirror. Save the new file under a different name so you can distinguish it from the preserved copy, then retry the installation before changing Windows or hardware settings.
A successful browser download is not proof that every byte is correct. A publisher-provided hash is stronger evidence because it lets you compare the file’s contents independently of the transfer notification.

3. Verify the publisher’s hash
When the publisher lists a hash, calculate the value locally before extracting. Microsoft’s Windows download instructions demonstrate this PowerShell method:
Get-FileHash 'C:Pathtodownload.iso'
Run the command in PowerShell, replacing the path with the actual file. The default algorithm is displayed with the resulting hash. Compare the complete value, character for character, with the value posted by the publisher.
- Values match: the downloaded file has the expected contents. Continue with a local extraction retry and then check the destination volume if the error remains.
- Values differ: discard that copy and download it again from the trusted source. Do not attempt to repair the archive by renaming it or disabling unrelated security settings.
- No publisher hash is available: you can still retry the download, but you cannot establish the same level of file-integrity evidence. Keep that limitation in mind when deciding whether to escalate.
Hash verification is read-only: it examines the file without modifying the archive or your drive.

4. Retry extraction to a simple local path
Use a destination on a local drive with adequate free space. A short path such as a dedicated folder near the drive root avoids permission and path-length complications while you test. Do not move the archive between several drives or change multiple installer settings at the same time. If the clean, hash-verified file extracts successfully there, the original location or destination path was part of the problem.
Make sure the destination has enough room for the unpacked files and temporary data. There is no universal free-space threshold established for this error, so check the installer’s stated requirements and leave practical headroom rather than relying on a fixed number.
Check the drive after a verified file still fails
If the same hash-verified archive fails again, inspect the volume used for the source, temporary files, and destination. Back up important data before running repair operations.
Run CHKDSK from an elevated terminal
- Open Windows Terminal or Command Prompt with administrator privileges.
- Identify the affected drive letter. Replace
X:in the commands below with that letter. - Start with a logical file-system check and repair:
chkdsk X: /f
Microsoft describes CHKDSK as checking a volume’s file system and file-system metadata for logical and physical errors. The /f option repairs logical errors.
If physical media errors are a concern, use:
chkdsk X: /r
The /r option checks for physical disk errors and attempts recovery. A surface scan can take considerably longer than a normal file check, particularly on a large or busy drive. Allow it to finish and review the report before retrying the installer.

Do not interrupt a repair casually, and keep a current backup. CHKDSK is a volume repair tool, not a way to make a corrupt download valid.
Repair Windows components only when symptoms point there
Use Windows component repair when other software also reports damaged system files or Windows behavior is unstable. Running these commands will not fix a checksum mismatch in an otherwise bad archive.
Run DISM first
- Open an elevated Command Prompt or Windows Terminal.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Microsoft Support explains that DISM provides the files required to repair corrupted Windows files. Let the operation complete before starting the next command.
Follow with System File Checker
After DISM finishes, run:
sfc /scannow
System File Checker scans protected system files and replaces corrupted copies when a repairable version is available. Restart Windows if the tool requests it, then retry the installation using the preserved, hash-verified download.
When the same verified file fails repeatedly
A repeatable failure at the same archive member after a clean download, hash match, simple local destination, and volume check warrants broader diagnosis.

The table below keeps the troubleshooting proportional. Start with the action that can most directly confirm or reject a bad download.
| Action | Evidence strength | Scope | Risk | Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Re-download from the trusted source | Directly tests the most supported explanation: corrupted or incomplete transfer | Single archive or installer | Low; preserves the original when saved separately | Usually quickest |
Compare a publisher hash with Get-FileHash |
Strong file-integrity evidence | Single downloaded file | Read-only verification | Short, depending on file size |
| Retry extraction to a local path | Shows whether the original path or destination contributes | One extraction attempt | Low when adequate space is available | Depends on archive size |
chkdsk X: /f |
Checks and repairs logical volume errors | Whole selected volume | Repair operation; back up first | Varies by volume |
chkdsk X: /r |
Checks physical sectors and attempts recovery | Whole selected volume | Repair operation; back up first | Can be lengthy |
DISM followed by sfc /scannow |
Addresses Windows component and protected-file corruption | Windows installation | System repair; use an elevated terminal | Varies with system state |
| Memory, storage, or vendor diagnostics | Useful when verified files fail repeatedly | Hardware or platform | Depends on the diagnostic; follow its instructions | Varies |
Use the failure pattern to decide whether to continue
Only one download fails
Preserve the failing copy, re-download from the trusted source, and compare the publisher hash if available. A successful installation from the replacement is a complete resolution; no system repair is justified solely by the original bad file.

Several downloads from the same source fail
Keep the filename, hash results, and failure point for each attempt. Try the publisher’s alternate official download method if one is offered, then test the destination volume. Repeated failures can reflect a source-side problem or a local storage path, so the recorded evidence matters more than changing unrelated settings.
Many unrelated archives fail
After verifying that each file is downloaded correctly, check the volumes involved and repair Windows components if other corruption symptoms exist. Escalate to storage and memory diagnostics when failures persist across independent files.
The error disappears after moving the destination
That result implicates the original destination or its path, not necessarily the archive. Check the original volume with CHKDSK and keep backups before using repair options.
When you can stop troubleshooting
Stop escalating when a clean download matches the publisher’s hash and installs or extracts successfully on the intended system. The checksum warning is then explained by the earlier damaged or incomplete copy. Continue investigating only when a verified file still fails, failures affect unrelated software, or CHKDSK and Windows repair report additional problems.
