Battlestate Games reversed course in stages after players objected to the Unheard Edition’s paid PvE mode being unavailable to owners of Escape from Tarkov’s Edge of Darkness edition. The dispute turned on whether PvE counted as downloadable content promised to those owners, while Battlestate also said server capacity prevented immediate access for everyone. By May 23, 2024, Forbes reported that all Edge of Darkness owners had access to PvE. These are historical terms, not confirmation of today’s prices or edition benefits.
Why Tarkov players objected to the Unheard Edition
When Battlestate Games introduced the Unheard Edition in April 2024, it included access to a PvE mode and was reported at the time to cost $250. Owners of the pricier Edge of Darkness edition objected that PvE should be included for them: they understood their edition to promise access to subsequent downloadable content. Video Games Chronicle reported on the price and the studio’s initial position that PvE was a feature or game mode, not DLC. Video Games Chronicle’s April 29, 2024 report documents the initial dispute.
That disagreement was about more than the existence of a new paid edition. It concerned what Edge of Darkness owners had been led to expect from their purchase, and whether Battlestate’s distinction between a “game mode” and DLC changed that promise.
How Battlestate’s position changed
The first response: future free access, but not yet
In its initial update, Battlestate maintained that PvE was not DLC under its definition. It also said the mode used separate network infrastructure and that it did not have the resources to admit all Edge of Darkness owners immediately. The company promised free access for those owners when the game released and when infrastructure had enough capacity. For players who wanted access earlier, it proposed selling PvE early access separately, with a 70% discount for Edge of Darkness owners. Battlestate’s update, mirrored by DevTrackers, records those statements.

The capacity explanation and the DLC disagreement were separate parts of the response: the former was offered as a reason access could not be opened to everyone at once; the latter was the studio’s answer to why it did not consider PvE an existing Edge of Darkness entitlement.
An apology and changes to edition perks
On April 30, 2024, GameSpot reported that COO Nik Buyanov apologized for failing to anticipate the reaction. “Unfortunately, I somehow did not foresee the fact of such a reaction and now I have drawn conclusions for my future decisions,” he said. GameSpot also reported that Edge of Darkness access would be delivered in waves, Battlestate planned to balance edition perks, and prioritized matchmaking would be removed. GameSpot’s April 30 report covers the apology and planned changes.

The later clarification
A subsequent edition clarification listed co-op PvE with persistent progression for Edge of Darkness owners, with access to be provided in waves. It also listed PvE as separately purchasable for owners of the Standard, Prepare for Escape, and Left Behind editions. Battlestate said the PvE ping limit would be removed across editions. The clarification set out the revised access arrangements; it did not make every edition’s PvE access identical. The edition clarification, mirrored by DevTrackers, lists those terms.

Forbes reported on May 23, 2024, that all Edge of Darkness owners had received PvE access alongside Unheard Edition owners. That reported rollout was the practical resolution to the staged-access promise—not the same thing as the earlier statement that free access would come at release once the infrastructure could support it. Forbes’ May 23, 2024 report also noted that the PvE mode, despite being a single-player experience, still required connections to online servers.

What the controversy established—and what it did not
- The core backlash: Edge of Darkness owners challenged the exclusion from a mode included in the new Unheard Edition, citing their expectation of access to subsequent DLC.
- Battlestate’s response: The studio classified PvE as a game mode rather than DLC, cited infrastructure capacity as a barrier to immediate access, and changed its stated access plan over several announcements.
- The eventual reported outcome: Forbes said all Edge of Darkness owners had PvE access by May 23, 2024; the mode still depended on online servers.
- What cannot be inferred today: The historical reports do not establish current edition pricing, regional availability, edition contents, or present-day PvE purchase terms. The reported $250 price and proposed 70% discount describe the April 2024 controversy, not verified current offers.
