Escape from Tarkov’s first Hardcore Wipe launched on July 9, 2025, with Patch 0.16.8.0. It sharply restricted trading, quests and map access, making progression more demanding. The launch rules are historical, not a reliable description of the live game today: Battlestate Games later announced multiple balance changes to the event.
What was the Hardcore Wipe?
It was a special Escape from Tarkov wipe built around restricted access to the game’s usual progression systems. Patch 0.16.8.0 was scheduled for installation on July 9, 2025, the date the first Hardcore Wipe began, according to Insider Gaming’s launch report.
Rather than treating the initial restrictions as a permanent mode specification, it is important to distinguish the launch setup from later changes. Battlestate Games’ official Telegram feed announced adjustments to trader loyalty levels, restock times, sale and purchase prices, available tasks, repair costs, spawn chances and repair-kit mechanics. The feed does not reliably expose the individual dates of those changes, so their exact timing cannot be established here.
What changed at launch?
Trading and progression
The Flea Market was closed and access to traders was restricted, according to Insider Gaming. PC Gamer’s July 10, 2025 report adds that most tasks were initially unavailable. Crafting was also restricted, while insurance and repair costs were substantially higher than usual.

Map access
At launch, players could directly access only two of the game’s eleven maps, PC Gamer reported. Other maps could be reached by transiting through Customs or Factory. That distinction matters: limited direct access did not mean every other location was completely inaccessible.
AI and difficulty
Insider Gaming’s launch summary also described tougher AI as part of the event. The available reporting does not establish a precise numerical change in AI difficulty, so it should be understood as a qualitative description of the launch conditions.

What is known about player participation?
Battlestate Games said more than 200,000 players took part in its in-game feedback survey about the Hardcore Wipe. The developer described it as: “This new survey is aimed at collecting player feedback on the Hardcore Wipe.” That figure counts survey participation; it does not show what participants thought, establish that respondents represented all players, or measure the event’s overall popularity.

No. “Today” in the original headline referred to July 9, 2025. As of October 8, 2026, the first Hardcore Wipe is a historical launch, and the launch restrictions should not be presented as the current live ruleset. Battlestate’s later balance announcements confirm that mechanics changed, but the latest live rules and game version are not established by the cited material.
