The dispute turned on whether that mode counted as downloadable content (DLC) covered by EoD’s promised access to subsequent DLC. Director and COO Nikita Buyanov defended the studio’s classification, then apologized as Battlestate changed its offer and later clarified how access would be granted.
Why Tarkov players objected to the Unheard Edition
The controversy was about more than a new premium edition. EoD owners had bought an edition associated with access to subsequent DLC, and many understood that promise to cover new substantial game content. Battlestate initially treated the persistent co-op PvE mode as a feature or mode rather than DLC, leaving EoD owners without the access they expected.
The Unheard Edition also bundled gameplay-related advantages and other benefits. Insider Gaming reported on April 26, 2024, that the edition had been unveiled at $250 at the time. That is a historical reported price, not a current price. The combination of a high-priced new edition, exclusive benefits, and initially limited PvE access for EoD owners intensified the objections. Insider Gaming’s April 26 report described continued criticism of both the temporary PvE offer and gameplay advantages.
What Battlestate first offered EoD owners
In its initial response, Battlestate offered EoD owners six months of access to co-op PvE, alongside additional edition benefits. The April 26 account listed insurance returns, daily task replacements, increased basic PMC karma and charisma, a hideout craft, higher personal trader limits, a quest line, and expanded pockets. That package did not settle the argument: for players who believed PvE was covered by the DLC promise, six months of access did not meet the expectation of lasting access.

How Buyanov explained the DLC dispute
In an April 2024 statement reproduced by Dev Trackers, Buyanov argued that “First of all, PvE gamemode this is not DLC.” The studio described the mode as relying on separate network infrastructure and limited server resources, and said EoD owners would receive it free at game release when capacity improved. Buyanov also proposed separate early access for owners of other editions and a 50% discount for EoD owners upgrading to Unheard. These were explanations and proposals made during the 2024 dispute, not confirmation of a current rollout schedule. The reproduced statement and proposed changes set out the studio’s position.
What changed after the backlash
April 30 apology and access in waves
On April 30, GameSpot reported that Buyanov apologized to players and said the Unheard Edition would remain but be modified. He wrote: “First of all, I would like to say that I am very sorry that fans and the game community in general are experiencing these feelings”. Battlestate said free PvE access for EoD owners would be delivered in waves because server capacity could not support immediate access for everyone. GameSpot’s April 30 coverage reported the apology and the capacity-related change.

Later entitlement clarification
A subsequent Battlestate clarification, reproduced by Dev Trackers, described persistent co-op PvE access for EoD owners in waves and listed changes to EoD and Unheard entitlements. It also said owners of other editions could earn certain Unheard-associated items—the Mark of The Unheard and Distress signal device—through in-game quests. Those statements clarify what the studio announced during the dispute; they should not be read as proof of any player’s present-day access or the current availability of a particular benefit. The later clarification contains the entitlement details.
