esent.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system component. When esent.dll is missing, damaged, mismatched, or loaded from the wrong location, the safest repair is usually Windows Update followed by DISM and System File Checker, not a download from a DLL website.
What esent.dll is
esent.dll is the Windows implementation of the Extensible Storage Engine, or ESE. Microsoft describes ESE as an embedded transactional database engine that supports indexed access, transactions, crash recovery, and ACID-style data consistency.

The file is also identified internally as Server Database Storage Engine and ships as part of the Microsoft Windows Operating System. Windows components and services that use ESE include Windows Search and Windows Update-related databases. Active Directory on Windows Server also uses ESENT through ESENT.dll. Applications can link to esent.dll at runtime when they need ESE database functions.
It is not:
- A Visual C++ Redistributable
- A DirectX runtime
- A .NET runtime
- A normal standalone download for end users
- A DLL that should usually be registered with
regsvr32
A particular game or application may request esent.dll because it uses ESE directly, depends on a Windows component that uses it, or has an incomplete or damaged installation. That does not automatically mean the Windows copy of the file is defective.

Version and location notes
Historical file inventories include several Windows-build-specific versions. They are useful for identifying an old copy, but they are not a universal current version list.
| Architecture | Example historical version | Example size |
|---|---|---|
| 64-bit | 10.0.14393.0 | 2.92 MB |
| 32-bit | 10.0.14393.0 | 2.59 MB |
| 64-bit | 10.0.10586.212 | 2.94 MB |
| 32-bit | 10.0.10586.212 | 2.6 MB |
| 32-bit | 6.3.9600.16384 | 2.27 MB |
| 32-bit | 6.2.9200.16561 | 2.27 MB |
| 32-bit | 6.1.7601.17577 | 1.62 MB |
| 32-bit | 6.1.7601.17514 | 1.62 MB |
The correct file depends on the installed Windows release, build, architecture, and servicing level.
On 64-bit Windows, native system components normally reside under:
%WINDIR%System32
32-bit components are affected by Windows system redirection and are commonly accessed through:
%WINDIR%SysWOW64
This does not mean that System32 always contains only 64-bit files or that SysWOW64 is simply a universal 32-bit replacement folder. Windows redirects access depending on the process architecture. Do not copy files between these folders to solve an error.
Microsoft documents the relevant loading behavior in its DLL search order documentation.
What the error messages mean
“The program can’t start because esent.dll is missing from your computer”
Windows or the application could not find a usable copy at the time it started. The file may have been deleted, quarantined, damaged, or expected by an incomplete application installation.
“The code execution cannot proceed because esent.dll was not found”
The program reached a point where it needed the DLL, but Windows could not locate it or a usable dependency. The message identifies the requested module, not necessarily the original cause.
Recommended Free Tools
“Error loading esent.dll. The specified module could not be found”
The named file may be missing, but this wording can also indicate that a dependency of esent.dll could not be loaded. Replacing the visible DLL is not automatically the correct answer.
“esent.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error”
This commonly indicates corruption, an incompatible architecture, a damaged dependent module, or a file that is not a genuine matching Windows copy. It is not proof that esent.dll itself is the only defective component.
“The procedure entry point … could not be located in the dynamic link library esent.dll”
The application found a DLL, but the DLL does not expose the function that the application expects. Common explanations include an incompatible version, wrong architecture, an application-local replacement, or an application built for a different Windows environment.
First determine whether Windows or one application is affected
Before making changes, check the scope of the failure.
Ask these questions:
- Does Windows start normally?
- Do Windows Search, Windows Update, or other Windows components fail?
- Do several unrelated applications report DLL errors?
- Does only one game or application fail?
- Did the problem begin immediately after a Windows update, application update, antivirus action, cleanup utility, disk problem, or incomplete reinstall?
- Is the affected application 32-bit or 64-bit?
If only one application fails while Windows and other programs work normally, repair that application before assuming that Windows has lost its system DLL. If several Windows components fail, prioritize Windows repair.
Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine a file, but do not assume that happened until Protection History confirms it.
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Under Current threats, select Protection history.
- Review recent detections involving
esent.dll. - Expand a detection to inspect its path, detection name, and action.
- If Microsoft Defender quarantined a genuine Windows copy, use Restore only after checking that the path and file are appropriate.
- If the file came from a download folder, temporary directory, or an unusual application folder, do not restore it automatically.
- Run a full scan before making further changes. If malware is suspected, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan and back up essential files.
Microsoft explains these actions in its Protection History guidance.
A restored file can be removed again if it is genuinely unsafe. In that situation, repair Windows from a trusted source instead of disabling security controls.

A failed or incomplete servicing operation can leave protected Windows components mismatched.
- Open Start > Settings.
- In Windows 11, select Windows Update.
- In Windows 10, select Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Try the affected application again.
If the issue started directly after an update, note the update date and whether other Windows functions changed. Microsoft provides additional Windows Update troubleshooting when updates fail or repeatedly roll back.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the main repair path for a missing, deleted, corrupted, or mismatched Windows copy.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as a repair source.

- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to complete. Do not close the window because progress may pause for a while.
- After DISM finishes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application or Windows component again.
Useful SFC results include:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations. Windows did not find protected-file integrity problems through this scan.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. Restart and test again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Continue with the repair escalation below.
Do not manually replace esent.dll before completing this process. Microsoft’s System File Checker repair procedure explains the supported sequence.
Repeatedly hunting for versions and rerunning SFC or DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting harder. Outbyte PC Repair can show a scan of detected Windows problems, while repairs are performed by its full version; it is optional, and Microsoft’s DISM/SFC path remains the appropriate system repair method.
If DISM cannot find repair files
If DISM reports that source files could not be found, use a matching Windows installation source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with a valid source matching the installed Windows edition, build, and architecture. Do not use an arbitrary folder from another computer.
Run SFC again afterward:
sfc /scannow
If SFC still cannot repair the file, continue to an in-place repair rather than downloading an isolated DLL.
Fix 3: Repair or reinstall the affected application
If only one game or application reports the error, its files or dependencies are more likely to be damaged than the entire Windows installation.
Use the application’s repair option
- Close the application and its launcher.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps in Windows 11.
- In Windows 10, open Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
- Select the affected application.
- Open Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application and test it.
Not every application offers these controls. For a game, use the publisher’s official launcher and select its file verification, repair, or validation command when available.
Reinstall the application
If repair does not help:
- Back up saved games or application data according to the publisher’s documented process.
- Uninstall the application from Settings > Apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it using the publisher’s official installer or launcher.
- Install the application in its supported architecture.
- Test it before adding unofficial modifications or replacement DLLs.
Reinstalling a game repairs the game’s installed files and dependencies. It does not repair Windows’ protected copy of esent.dll, so run DISM and SFC when Windows itself is affected.

A 32-bit program and a 64-bit program can load different system components and dependencies. An incompatible application build can produce a missing-file, entry-point, or “not designed to run” message even when a Windows copy of esent.dll exists.

Check the following:
- Whether the application supports your Windows architecture
- Whether the application was installed completely
- Whether a recent update changed its architecture
- Whether the error appears only from a shortcut or launcher
- Whether a suspicious
esent.dllexists inside the application directory - Whether a copy exists in a temporary folder or download directory
Windows DLL search behavior can allow an application-local file to be loaded before the expected system component. A file in an unusual writable directory deserves additional suspicion. Do not delete a file from a system directory merely because its name matches the error. Verify its Microsoft signature and metadata, then repair Windows or the application through the supported method.

System Restore is appropriate when the error began immediately after a driver installation, Windows update, cleanup utility, or application installation and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next > Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.

Fix 6: Use Windows repair reinstall if normal repair fails
If DISM and SFC cannot repair the component, an in-place Windows repair can replace system components while preserving the installation.
Windows 11 repair reinstall
On supported Windows 11 installations:
- Open Settings > System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
- Allow the computer to restart and complete the repair.
Microsoft says this reinstalls the current Windows version and repairs system files and components while preserving apps, files, and settings. See the official Windows Update repair reinstall instructions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

A matching Windows installation medium can also perform an in-place repair.
- Obtain installation media matching the installed Windows edition and architecture.
- Start Windows normally.
- Open the installation media and run
setup.exe. - Follow the setup prompts.
- Select Keep personal files and apps when offered.
- Complete the installation.
Do not boot from the media when your goal is an in-place repair unless the instructions specifically require it. Microsoft’s installation-media guidance describes the available choices.
Fix 7: Investigate disk damage or malware
If files repeatedly disappear or become corrupted, the problem may extend beyond esent.dll.
First back up important data. Then investigate:
- Storage health warnings
- Repeated filesystem errors
- Unexpected shutdowns
- Malware detections
- Files that change or vanish after reboot
- SFC findings that return after repair
Microsoft includes this disk-check command in its Windows repair guidance:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
chkdsk /f C:
Windows may schedule the check for the next restart because the system drive is in use. Accept that schedule only after saving work and backing up important files.
If malware is suspected and normal recovery tools fail, Microsoft lists clean installation from installation media among the available recovery options. Review the official Windows recovery options before choosing a destructive repair.
Driver troubleshooting is not the normal fix
A driver is not a normal source of esent.dll errors. Update or reinstall a driver only when Device Manager, an application crash report, or a clearly timed hardware change identifies that driver as the likely cause.
To inspect Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories related to the suspected device.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Review the General and Driver tabs.
- Use Update driver or Uninstall device only when the device is actually implicated.
- Restart Windows and install the manufacturer-supported driver if required.
Guessing which of dozens of drivers is stale is inefficient. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues, while driver installation is handled by its full version; it is optional and not a substitute for repairing a damaged Windows component.

Do not download esent.dll from a random DLL site
An arbitrary download can contain malware, the wrong Windows build, the wrong architecture, or a modified file. It can also leave the actual component-store problem untouched. A manually copied DLL may load from an application directory and create a DLL hijacking risk.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, an in-place repair, or the application publisher’s official installer instead.
Do not copy the file from another PC
Even two computers with the same apparent Windows version can differ in edition, build, architecture, and servicing level. Manual replacement is an advanced fallback only after SFC identifies a protected file it could not repair and you have an exact trusted matching source.
Do not run regsvr32 esent.dll
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide the DllRegisterServer entry point. esent.dll is a Windows database engine component, not a normal COM registration DLL. Running the command may produce an error stating that the entry point was not found, and it does not repair the file.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Do not install unrelated runtimes
Installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET solely because an error names esent.dll is not the normal fix. Those packages do not provide the standard Windows copy of this component.
Do not disable antivirus permanently
If Protection History confirms a false positive, verify the file and restore it cautiously. Otherwise scan the computer and repair Windows from a trusted source.
FAQ
Is esent.dll a Windows file?
Yes. It is a Microsoft Windows component implementing the Extensible Storage Engine. It is normally maintained through Windows servicing rather than a separate user-facing redistributable.
Where should esent.dll be?
A legitimate system copy is normally managed in Windows system locations, including %WINDIR%System32 and, through 32-bit system redirection, %WINDIR%SysWOW64. The correct location and architecture depend on the process and installed Windows system.
Recommended Free Tools
Why does a game need esent.dll?
The game may use ESE directly, rely on a component that uses it, or have an incomplete installation. If only the game fails, verify or reinstall the game before replacing a Windows DLL.
Is there a latest esent.dll version?
There is no single universal version that applies to every Windows installation. The correct version is tied to the installed Windows build and servicing system.
What if the file exists but the error continues?
The file may be corrupted, the wrong architecture, loaded from the wrong directory, or dependent on another damaged module. Check the application installation, suspicious application-local copies, Windows Security history, and DISM/SFC results.
Should I use Windows Features?
Usually not. Enabling a random Windows feature does not repair esent.dll. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, application repair, or an in-place Windows repair according to the scope of the failure.
When should I reinstall Windows?
Consider an in-place repair when DISM and SFC cannot restore the component, or when several Windows functions remain damaged. A clean installation is a later recovery option for severe corruption or suspected infection, after backing up essential data.
