Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before replacing anything, establish which program is requesting plotui.dll.
- Does the error appear while printing, adding a printer, launching CAD software, or starting Windows?
- Is the file under a Windows or printer-driver directory, or inside a third-party application folder?
- Does the file identify Microsoft Corporation or another publisher?
- Did the problem begin after a Windows update, printer-driver update, antivirus quarantine, disk cleanup, system restore, cloning, or CAD-software update?
- Is the affected application 32-bit or 64-bit?
- Is the printer a legacy plotter that uses an older driver?
These details determine whether you need a printer-driver repair, Windows component repair, or a repair of the application that owns the file.
What plotui.dll does
plotui.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows printer-driver component when its path and signature identify Microsoft. Microsoft describes it as the plotter driver user interface DLL, providing shared interface code for printers supported by the MSPlot system.
MSPlot is part of Windows’ older plotter-driver architecture. It can work with:

Microsoft also included Plotui.dll source code in the Windows 7 Driver Kit sample under the MSPlot printer-driver sources. The technical description is available in Microsoft’s Plotter Driver Components documentation.
This is a legacy printing component, not a normal Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET runtime file. A missing copy is most plausible when the error occurs during printer setup, printing, plotting, or software that uses a plotter driver.
The filename alone is not proof of ownership. Some third-party applications, including CAD-related software, have also used a separate plotui.dll with different vendor metadata. A file inside an application directory may belong to that application rather than Windows.
Fix 1: Identify the file and the program loading it
Do this before downloading or copying a DLL.
Check the error source
Note the name of the program shown in the error. A printer utility, CAD application, plotter driver, or print-related process points toward MSPlot. A game or unrelated utility is unusual for Microsoft’s plotter component and requires extra verification.
Recommended Free Tools
If the message does not show a path, check the likely locations:
- Open File Explorer.
- Search for
plotui.dllon the system drive. - Right-click each result and select Properties.
- Open the Details tab.
- Record File description, Product name, Company, Original filename, and File version.
- Open Digital Signatures and inspect the signer.
A legitimate Microsoft copy should identify Microsoft-related product information and a Microsoft signature. A copy attributed to another publisher should be repaired through that publisher’s application or driver package.
Do not assume that every Microsoft copy is always located in System32 or SysWOW64. Windows editions, driver packages, and application layouts differ, and there is no universal current location or version table for this file.
Check whether the process is 32-bit or 64-bit
Architecture matters when the loader reports that a file is missing or invalid.

- A 64-bit application normally needs compatible 64-bit components.
- A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows runs through Windows’ compatibility layer and can use components in the appropriate 32-bit system area.
Use the application’s documentation or Task Manager to establish its architecture where available. Do not copy a DLL from one architecture area to another. A file with the correct name but the wrong architecture can produce a bad-image or load error instead of solving the problem.
Fix 2: Remove and reinstall the printer or plotter driver
This is the most likely repair when plotui.dll appears during printing, printer installation, or CAD plotting.
Remove the printer in Windows 11
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Open Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected printer or plotter.
- Choose Remove and confirm.
- Restart Windows.
After restarting:
- Return to Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Allow Windows to search for the printer.
- Install it if Windows offers a suitable driver.
- Print a test page or open the CAD program and test a plot.
Microsoft recommends checking Windows Update for current printer drivers. Its printer-driver installation guidance explains the supported process.
If Windows cannot find a suitable driver, download the package only from the printer or plotter manufacturer’s official support channel. For an older plotter, the required package may be archived or designed for an earlier Windows release. Compatibility with current Windows versions is not guaranteed.

Remove an older driver package when necessary
A printer can be removed while its driver package remains installed. If reinstalling the same device changes nothing:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
printui /s /t2. - Press Enter.
- On the Drivers tab, select the driver associated with the affected printer.
- Select Remove.
- Choose the option to remove the driver and driver package if Windows presents it.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current manufacturer package or the driver supplied through Windows Update.
Only remove a driver when you can identify it as belonging to the affected printer. Removing a shared driver can affect other printers.
If the printer is managed by a server, remove and reinstall the shared printer from the organization’s approved print server instead of forcing a local package.
When you are tired of hunting through old printer packages and checking which drivers are stale, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver problems; its free scan shows what it finds, while driver installation and repair require the full version. It is optional, and the printer manufacturer’s package remains the preferred source for a specific legacy plotter.

Do not expect an update to provide every legacy plotter driver. Modern Windows printing increasingly uses the IPP printing platform, while older MSPlot packages may require a manufacturer-supported driver or a compatible older Windows environment.
Fix 4: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Use this path when Windows reports that plotui.dll is missing or damaged, the file is identified as a protected Microsoft component, or the problem affects more than one printer-related operation.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for the operation to complete. Do not close the window while it is working.
Run SFC
In the same elevated window, run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after the scan finishes and test the operation that produced the error.
SFC may report that it found no integrity violations, repaired corrupted files, or could not repair some files. A successful scan does not prove that plotui.dll was the file repaired. If the error remains, the application may be loading a different copy, may have a missing dependency, or may have a damaged printer-driver registration.
Microsoft’s complete procedure is documented in Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files.
If SFC cannot repair files, save its relevant details:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log >"%userprofile%Desktopsfcdetails.txt"
Open sfcdetails.txt from the desktop and check whether plotui.dll is named. If it is not, SFC did not identify this file as the damaged component.
Running DISM and SFC manually can make it difficult to tell which repair changed the system. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it detects; its free scan identifies issues, while repair requires the full version. It is not required, and DISM followed by SFC remains Microsoft’s direct repair procedure.

If plotui.dll is inside a CAD program, viewer, printer utility, or another application directory and its signature names that application’s vendor, do not replace it with Microsoft’s plotter DLL.
Use the application’s own repair option:
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
- If Repair does not help, choose Reset only if you understand that it may remove application data or settings.
- If no repair option exists, uninstall the application, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the vendor’s official installer.
For a CAD program, reinstalling that program is the definitive repair when its own signed plotui.dll is missing. Microsoft’s similarly named plotter component is not a substitute.
If the failure occurs only when opening a drawing or sending a job to a plotter, also check the application’s configured printer, plotter driver, and output device. A broken configuration can remain after a driver update or software uninstall.
Fix 6: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may quarantine a legitimate but old driver component, especially after a scan or cleanup operation.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Open Protection history.
- Look for an action involving
plotui.dll. - Compare the quarantined file’s path, publisher, and product information with the printer or application that needs it.
Restore a file only when its path and digital signature establish that it belongs to the expected Microsoft driver or trusted application. If the file is restored, reinstall the owning driver or application afterward and run another security scan.
If the file has an unexpected path, lacks a trusted signature, or is requested by an unrelated program, do not restore it automatically. Investigate the program and run an approved security scan.
Fix 7: Check driver architecture and compatibility
Legacy plotter drivers can fail on current Windows even when the DLL is present.
Confirm:
- The driver supports your Windows edition.
- The driver matches the application’s 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- The printer or plotter model is supported.
- The package came from Windows Update or the manufacturer.
- Old driver remnants were removed before reinstalling.
If the device requires an obsolete driver, possible supported paths include a vendor-compatible print server, a manufacturer-approved replacement driver, or an appropriate older Windows environment. Do not force an unrelated printer driver merely because it has a similar model name.

Fix 8: Roll back a recent change
Use rollback only when the timing is clear.
Roll back a device driver
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant printer or device category.
- Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Choose Roll Back Driver if available.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Printer-driver details may instead be managed through Printers & scanners, the manufacturer’s utility, or a print server.
Use System Restore
If the problem began immediately after a driver or software change and no current package works:
- Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the change.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Complete the restore and restart.
System Restore is not a replacement for reinstalling a current, supported driver. It is most useful when the failure clearly follows a recent system change.
Why you should not download plotui.dll
Random DLL repositories are an unsafe and unreliable repair source. A downloaded file may contain malware, use the wrong architecture, be incompatible with the calling program, or have the same filename but a different vendor.
Manually copying a DLL into System32 or SysWOW64 can also break driver ownership, servicing, and signature integrity. It does not recreate the printer-driver package, its minidrivers, registry configuration, or dependencies.
Use Windows Update, the printer or plotter manufacturer’s official driver package, or the official installer for the application that owns the file.
Why regsvr32 normally does not apply
regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command. Microsoft documents it as a utility that calls a DLL’s DllRegisterServer or DllUnregisterServer entry point.
A printer-driver user-interface DLL is not automatically a self-registering COM component. Running a command such as this usually does not repair an MSPlot installation:
regsvr32 plotui.dll
It can produce another error if the DLL does not export the required registration function. Reinstall the owning printer driver or application instead. Microsoft’s regsvr32 reference explains the command’s actual purpose.
If the error still appears
If DISM and SFC complete successfully but the error continues:
- Recheck the exact path shown by the error.
- Confirm which executable is loading the DLL.
- Verify the DLL’s signer and product information.
- Check whether another dependency is missing.
- Remove and reinstall the affected printer driver package.
- Repair or reinstall the application if the DLL is in its directory.
- Review antivirus quarantine and recent Windows or software changes.
- Check disk health and run an approved malware scan if the file appeared unexpectedly.
A plotui.dll message during game startup is unusual for Microsoft’s plotter subsystem. Treat it as an identity problem until the path, signer, and calling program are verified.
FAQ
Is plotui.dll a genuine Windows file?
Yes, Microsoft documents a plotui.dll used by the legacy MSPlot plotter-driver architecture. Not every file with that name is Microsoft’s copy, so verify its path and digital signature.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Does plotui.dll belong to a printer driver?
Microsoft’s documented file is a plotter-driver user-interface component. It is associated with older pen, raster, and HP-GL/2-style plotter support rather than a general application runtime.
Will reinstalling Visual C++ fix it?
There is no verified basis for treating Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET as the normal repair for Microsoft’s plotter-driver plotui.dll.
Should I register it with regsvr32?
Normally, no. regsvr32 applies to DLLs that provide the required registration entry point; it is not a general printer-driver repair tool.
What if the file is inside my CAD program?
Check its Company and Digital Signatures information. If it belongs to the CAD vendor, repair or reinstall that application from its official installer rather than copying Microsoft’s similarly named file.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCan Windows 11 still use an old plotter?
Possibly, but compatibility depends on the device and driver. Windows’ modern printing direction favors IPP, while legacy MSPlot packages may need a supported manufacturer driver, a compatible print server, or an older Windows environment.
What if SFC says everything is fine?
SFC may not be repairing the file involved. Recheck the path and calling program, then repair the printer driver or third-party application that actually owns plotui.dll.
