To recruit Bastian Hallix, find him south of Deepscorn Hollow on Blackwood’s southwest coast. To recruit Mirri Elendis, find her north of Doomvault Vulpinaz in northern Blackwood. Complete the associated quest for the companion you want, then activate the unlocked collectible in Collections → Allies → Companions.
Where to find Bastian and Mirri in Blackwood

ESO’s Companions support article confirms that each character is unlocked through an associated quest. It does not state the introductory quest titles, so use the quest marker at the character’s location rather than relying on an unconfirmed title.
How to recruit and activate a companion
- Travel to the companion’s location in Blackwood and begin their associated quest.
- Complete the quest. ESO says this grants the respective companion collectible.
- Open Collections → Allies → Companions and activate the collectible.
Only one companion or assistant can be active at a time. Also, the character you are currently playing must have completed that companion’s introductory quest to summon them—even if another character on your account unlocked the collectible. Companions are restricted in PvP areas, solo arenas, housing instances, and some other situations, according to ESO’s Companions System Guide.
Do you need Blackwood to reach them?
ESO Support says access to Blackwood requires owning The Elder Scrolls Online: Blackwood chapter. From the Blackwood zone map, its travel instructions include selecting the Leyawiin Outskirts Wayshrine; boats or carts from Elden Root, Mournhold, or Wayrest are also described. If Blackwood is unavailable on your account, check your current account entitlements, as chapter access can depend on what you own.

Choosing between Bastian and Mirri
Location or character preference may be the simplest way to choose. ESO’s official guide, published May 6, 2021, also describes different non-combat perks for them:

These are the guide’s published descriptions, not a guarantee that the mechanics remain unchanged. Check current in-game behavior before choosing solely for a perk.

What unlocks after recruitment?
Each companion has two personal side quests that become available after you build sufficient rapport, according to ESO’s guide. Completing the second side quest unlocks a houseguest collectible. ESO Support names the houseguest quests as Family Secrets for Bastian and Dead Weight for Mirri.
