What critics think of Esoteric Ebb
The critic excerpts available are strongly positive overall, particularly about how the game gives players room to shape a character and story. Gamereactor UK calls it a lovely RPG that puts player agency first and praises its immersive world. DualShockers recommends it to D&D fans looking for unusual writing and humor, while Console Creatures highlights its blend of CRPG and tabletop role-playing mechanics. Another Metacritic excerpt says the game draws on major genre influences but reshapes them into something fresh. These are individual review assessments, not a reported aggregate critic score.
The most pointed artistic reservation is that Esoteric Ebb can wear its Disco Elysium influence too openly. One Metacritic excerpt argues it would benefit from developing a more distinct voice and shedding some of those conspicuous traits. That is a question of originality and style, rather than a claim that the game lacks its own premise or systems.
What makes the game distinctive
Steam describes Esoteric Ebb as an isometric, “Disco-like,” TTRPG-turned-CRPG set in a bizarre post-Arcanepunk fantasy world. You play a cleric and government investigator in the days before the first election, beginning with an exploded tea shop. The game is single-player, and its official store description puts branching dialogue, choices, character stats, dice rolls, and voices that chime in during encounters at the center of play. That mix helps explain the critical response: the game is not simply a point-and-click investigation or a dialogue-heavy story. Its tabletop-derived checks and character attributes are part of how role-playing decisions play out. Readers comparing it with other narrative RPGs should consider how much they enjoy dense conversations, dice-and-stat systems, comic writing, and exploration—and whether they prefer playing with a controller or mouse and keyboard.
Critic reservations: interface and review-build polish
PC Gamer’s review was enthusiastic but noted a cluttered interface, difficult inventory management on gamepad, occasional gamepad UI and pathfinding glitches, typos, and two feats that were bugged in the review build. The reviewer still recommended the game, describing it as a worthwhile on-the-go experience. Those observations are tied to that review build; they do not establish that every issue remains in the current version.

For players planning to use a Steam Deck or another controller-based setup, the review’s inventory and interface criticism is worth weighing. It is evidence of friction reported by one reviewer, not a controlled comparison of input methods or confirmation of current bugs.
Critic reviews versus Steam user reviews
Steam’s user-review snapshot, accessed in 2026, showed 95% positive from 7,034 English-language reviews; recent reviews were 93% positive from 397 reviews. Those are dynamic player ratings, separate from critics’ reviews, and can change as more reviews arrive. Steam’s store page displays the current user-review information.

The critic excerpts and Steam ratings point in a similar positive direction, but they measure different things: critics publish individual assessments, while Steam percentages summarize player recommendations. Neither number alone tells you whether its talk-heavy style, dice-driven checks, or interface will suit you.
How long is Esoteric Ebb?
Developer Christoffer Bodegård estimated in a 2026 announcement that a “decently completionist” run takes over 40 hours of continuous playtime; he also said some playtesters reported more than 50 hours for a hardcore deep dive. These are developer estimates and playtester reports, not independently measured averages. Actual time will depend on how much you explore and read. The developer announcement also says the game has 89 soundtrack tracks, many longer than 30 minutes, and that the first soundtrack volume runs over an hour and a half; those figures are the developer’s descriptions.

Is Esoteric Ebb worth playing?
The critical case is strongest if you enjoy narrative RPGs built around conversation, character choices, humor, and tabletop-style rules. Its cleric-investigator premise and fantasy setting give those systems a distinct context, while the reviews praise the agency and writing they enable. If you are wary of games that visibly borrow from Disco Elysium, or if controller interface comfort is a priority, the reported reservations deserve attention. Steam’s highly positive player snapshot adds encouraging context, but it cannot settle those personal fit questions.
