In the default puzzle state, shoot the entrance orb, go through the left-hand doorway, turn around and shoot the entrance orb again, then shoot the orb in the room you entered. Follow the doors this opens without activating unrelated orbs. The Esoteric Ruins are west of Old Lumiere; beyond the maze, collect the Wood Boards and take them back to Portier for the Protecting Heal Picto. Gameranx and Kotaku describe the route and quest outcome.
Where to find the Esoteric Ruins
Look west of Old Lumiere for the Esoteric Ruins and enter the maze. The location is described in the Gameranx guide and the GameFAQs walkthrough.

Default-state maze route
This sequence assumes you have not already changed the maze’s switches. Glowing orbs operate energy-field doors, and an orb can affect a door somewhere else in the ruins; you can also shoot an orb from another room. Follow the revealed openings rather than treating each orb as a local door switch.
- At the entrance, shoot the glowing orb. This opens the doorway on the left.
- Enter the left-hand room and turn around. Shoot the entrance orb a second time.
- Shoot the orb in the room you entered. This is the initial A-A-B sequence described by both Gameranx and Kotaku.
- Continue through the doors that open. Avoid shooting other orbs unless the route requires them. Later room labels differ between the guides: Kotaku’s account has you reach Room 4 and shoot orb C in Room 3 from there, while Gameranx describes additional interactions as you move through the central rooms. Use the open doorways and the orb positions in your game as your guide; do not assume the two guides’ room numbering matches.
- At the far side, collect the Wood Boards. A grapple shortcut back toward Portier is described in the Kotaku walkthrough and GameFAQs walkthrough.
If the route does not work
The sequence above is for the default state, not a universal reset code. The puzzle does not reset simply because you leave the ruins, and the GameFAQs walkthrough says using an Expedition Flag does not reset it either. If you previously shot different switches, the doors may be in another configuration; the available guides do not establish a complete recovery sequence for every possible state. Check which doors are currently open rather than repeating the default sequence blindly.

Return the Wood Boards to Portier
Give the Wood Boards to Portier to receive the Protecting Heal Picto. Kotaku describes its effect as applying Shell for one turn when an ally is healed. If you choose to attack Portier instead, Kotaku reports a different reward: 3 Colour of Lumina and 1 Polished Chroma Catalyst. That is an alternate outcome, not the reward for completing the Wood Boards handoff.
