After completing Monoco’s Station, take the portal west of Old Lumière, climb the cliff route, and work through the maze by changing which barriers are open with the glowing braziers. Along the approach, you can find one Paint Cage and three locks; a separate optional quest begins with a blue orb near the Lumière’s Wrecks Expedition Flag.
How to get to Esoteric Ruins
Esoteric Ruins is an optional location west of Old Lumière. Neoseeker’s route guide says access becomes available after completing Monoco’s Station: use the portal west of Old Lumière to reach a courtyard with the Lumière’s Wrecks Expedition Flag and a floating blue orb. From there, follow the handholds and rope up the cliff toward the ruins. Neoseeker’s Esoteric Ruins walkthrough gives this route and the area’s pickup details.
The approach leads past a Paint Cage before the maze. Neoseeker lists the cage reward as 4,990 Chroma and describes a Colour of Lumina pickup near crates on a lower side path. These are guide-reported location and reward details.
Where are the Paint Cage and locks?
Push Square’s collectible guide reports one Paint Cage and three locks near it. Follow the path beyond the cage and check the surrounding ruins:

How the Esoteric Ruins maze puzzle works
The maze is not a single open corridor: rooms connect through barriers whose states change as you interact with the glowing objects inside. The Clair Obscur Wiki describes shooting the fire braziers with ranged attacks to open or close adjacent doors. Treat each brazier as a way to alter the route between chambers, rather than assuming a barrier that is closed will remain that way.

- EXPLORE THE WILDERNESS: The Queen has tasked you with scouting new territories in the World of Ulos, first introduced in the hit game Roll Player!
- DRAW YOUR MAP: 100 double-sided map sheets challenge players to draw unique terrain shapes on their maps over the course of four “seasons.”
- BEWARE OF MONSTERS: It’s an Ambush! Draw these beastly attackers, but be sure to surround them swiftly before they cost you dearly…
- UNIQUE SCORING: Goals are randomly selected each game, creating different scoring challenges and combos each time you play.
Look for a glowing brazier or orb in each room, use a ranged attack, then inspect the doors around that chamber to see which connections changed. Continue through the newly available passage and repeat the process as needed. The Clair Obscur Wiki’s Esoteric Ruins page describes this mechanic, while Game8’s Esoteric Ruins maze puzzle guide covers the maze and approach. Exact chamber sequences are not included here because the available guides differ in detail; focus on the room-to-room state changes rather than following an unverified turn-by-turn route.
How to start and finish the Portier quest
The Portier quest is optional and separate from collecting the cage and locks. Speak with the floating blue orb near the Lumière’s Wrecks Expedition Flag to begin. The Clair Obscur Wiki identifies it as an Unfinished Portier and says the maze route leads to Wood Boards beyond the cliff. Bring the boards back to the orb; handing them over reveals the Portier’s true form.
