The design replaces an earlier multi-chip prototype with an ESP32 and a small set of connections. It was not made to work with the GBA SP.
How does the GBA Bluetooth adapter work?
The adapter plugs into the GBA link port and supplies the ESP32 with 3.3 V from the console. With the cartridge slot empty, powering on the GBA starts the multiboot process: the ESP32 sends a small ROM to the handheld over the link connection. That program lets the GBA communicate with the ESP32, which manages Bluetooth and sends the handheld’s button input to a paired host as a gamepad.
The project README says the saved Bluetooth device address can be reused on a later launch by pressing A. The listed hosts include a PC, phone, or Android TV. This is a controller project for a GBA, not a general-purpose wireless modification for Game Boy Color or other Game Boy models.
What changed in the ESP32 redesign?
Hackaday’s April 21, 2020 report describes Shyri Villar’s redesign as a reduction from the earlier Atmega/HC-05 prototype to an ESP32 connected to the GBA link-cable connector. The report says five wires are enough for transferring the small ROM and carrying input between the GBA and Bluetooth hardware.

In a Hackaday discussion on April 23, 2020, Villar identified the module used as an ESP32-WROOM-32 and directed readers to the project page for build instructions.
What parts do you need?
At minimum, the project requires an ESP32-WROOM-32 module, a way to connect it to the GBA link port, and firmware built or flashed onto the ESP32. The related open-hardware implementation provides a more specific PCB bill of materials:

The listed module is the hardware choice documented by the project; the sources do not establish that every ESP32 board or module is a drop-in substitute. Check that the physical module and its connections match the build you follow.
How do you connect it to the GBA?
The adapter needs a male GBA link-port connector. Hackaday’s report notes that a third-party GBA-to-GameCube link cable can serve as a compact donor: its cable can be opened and the connector salvaged for the build. This is one enclosure route, rather than a requirement to use that specific cable.

The related open-hardware implementation takes a different route, using a custom 1 mm PCB and providing Gerbers for fabrication. These are alternative physical approaches: a salvaged cable connector may simplify the enclosure, while the PCB design gives builders a documented board layout and component arrangement. The available description does not specify a complete enclosure design for the PCB route.
Will it work with a GBA SP?
The author reports that the project did not work with the GBA SP and suspects the SP does not supply enough current through its port. That explanation is a suspicion, not a demonstrated diagnosis. The documented target is the traditional GBA; do not assume SP compatibility from the fact that both consoles have link ports.

What firmware environment does the project require?
The project README records ESP-IDF v3.3.2 as the tested environment and identifies a particular btstack commit as the newest revision proven to work with that project. Those details describe the historical, tested combination rather than a guarantee that the firmware builds unchanged today.
Current Espressif documentation describes the ESP32 as supporting Dual-Mode Bluetooth 4.2 and provides Bluetooth Classic stack and application APIs. That current platform documentation does not establish that this 2020 project firmware remains source-compatible with present-day toolchains. For a reproducible build, use the project’s recorded ESP-IDF and btstack revisions first; treat upgrading either dependency as a separate porting task.

What should builders check before starting?
- Confirm that you have a traditional GBA, rather than assuming the GBA SP is supported.
- Use the documented ESP32-WROOM-32 module and a compatible GBA link-port connector.
- Choose either the donor-cable enclosure approach or the supplied PCB implementation; they are distinct hardware routes.
- Plan to compile or flash the firmware, and account for the project’s historical ESP-IDF and btstack versions if current build tools do not reproduce the documented setup.
