God of War Ragnarök is a complete game on both PS4 and PS5. The PS5 version is the better technical experience, with a 60fps-targeting mode, shorter loading, enhanced visuals and DualSense features. If you already own a PS4 and value matters most, its version remains a sound way to play; you do not need to buy a new console to get the full campaign.

Sony’s advertised PS5 targets and feature list are on the official game page; the Store identifies DualSense support and PS5 Pro enhancement on its product listing.
Are the PS4 and PS5 versions the same game?
Yes, in the way most players mean it: both versions deliver the same principal story, realms, characters, combat systems, gear systems, missions and side content. The PS4 edition is not a trial or a cut-down campaign. The game launched on both platforms on November 9, 2022, and PlayStation’s FAQ lists both versions and their editions: God of War Ragnarök FAQ.
The distinction is hardware and presentation, not a separate PS5 story. New Game+ adds replay features and equipment, but it is not a reason by itself to choose PS5 over PS4; consult the current game listing and update information for the version you play. What looks and feels different on PS5?
Resolution and image quality
On PS5, the resolution-focused mode targets full 4K at 30fps. The performance-focused mode uses dynamic resolution upscaled to 4K while targeting 60fps. Those descriptions matter: the performance mode should not be described as native 4K at a locked 60fps. Dynamic resolution can vary, and the final image also depends on the display and selected settings.
Sony also highlights enhanced reflections, lighting, shadows, geometric detail and deformable snow on PS5. That does not mean every texture or asset has been remade. The improvements are easier to appreciate on a large 4K screen viewed at a reasonable distance than on a small or distant 1080p television. On a 1080p display, the PS5 can still improve smoothness and loading even though the screen cannot show 4K detail.
Frame rate and combat feel
For many players, the largest day-to-day improvement is the PS5’s smoother 60fps-targeting option, rather than the resolution difference. Camera movement, traversal and combat can feel more responsive and fluid. Sony states a target, not a guarantee that every moment holds that rate. The exact behavior on individual PS4 models is not established by the official product information, so avoid assuming a particular locked frame rate for base PS4, PS4 Slim or PS4 Pro.

PS4 Pro may deliver a better image or steadier performance than a base PS4, depending on the selected mode and display. It still does not become equivalent to a native PS5 version: it lacks the PS5 SSD advantage, the PS5 version’s full performance options and DualSense-specific features.
120Hz displays and PS5 Pro
A 120Hz television or monitor matters only for modes that use a higher refresh rate, and compatible console, display and connection settings are required. Sony’s general listing does not establish the exact current labels or behavior for every high-refresh mode. Check the installed game’s graphics settings rather than assuming every PS5 owner has the same options. The Store calls the game PS5 Pro Enhanced, but its listing does not specify a particular Pro resolution, frame rate or rendering configuration: PlayStation Store listing.
Does PS5 load faster?
Yes. Sony promotes shorter loading times on PS5, thanks to its high-speed SSD. That reduces downtime when returning after a death, fast travelling or moving from a transition back into play. It is faster loading, not an assurance that every transition is instant. See the official game page.

What do DualSense features add?
The native PS5 version supports DualSense vibration and adaptive triggers. Haptics can add tactile texture to movement, combat and environmental interactions, while trigger effects provide additional resistance or feedback. They add immersion, not story content or a different combat system, and players who prefer can adjust supported controller effects. The PS5 product listing confirms these features: PlayStation Store.
Is the PS4 version still worth playing?
Yes. It is a complete, playable cross-generation release, and it is the sensible choice if you already own a PS4, want to control spending, or are content with an experience oriented around older hardware. Base PS4 and PS4 Slim owners should expect more limited performance and longer loading than on PS5; PS4 Pro can improve the presentation but does not supply PS5 features. Do not mistake a technical step down for missing core content.

- For a 1080p screen, the case for PS5 is mainly performance, loading and controller features, not 4K resolution.
- For a large 4K or compatible 120Hz/VRR display, PS5’s presentation has a stronger appeal, although the display is not a requirement to play.
Which edition or upgrade should you buy?
PlayStation offers PS4-only and PS4/PS5 product options, so check the platform labels before checkout. The official Store product listing shows the product family; the PS4 product page describes the PS4 version and upgrade path.

- Already own the digital PS4 game? An eligible digital copy can be upgraded to the digital PS5 version for an additional charge. Check the Store account and product page for the current offer and price in your region.
- Own a physical PS4 disc? An eligible disc can be used for the upgrade only on a PS5 with a disc drive. You must keep the disc available to play.
- Have a PS5 Digital Edition? It cannot read a physical PS4 disc, so that disc cannot serve as the upgrade entitlement. Choose a digital option instead.
- Buying a copy now? Compare the live price of the PS4/PS5 product with the PS4 copy plus any upgrade charge. A used disc is worthwhile only if the total works out and your PS5 has a drive.
Upgrade fees and discounts vary over time and by region; the available sources do not establish a universally current price. The official FAQ also says disc and digital retail versions do not differ in game content, apart from how they are acquired and used.

PlayStation supports transfer of PS4 save data to PS5 through its console data-transfer options. The platform guide explains the general process: PS5 Quick Start Guide (PDF). For Ragnarök, make a manual save and follow the game’s current save-transfer prompts before deleting the PS4 installation. Do not assume automatic cloud synchronization; cloud availability can depend on account and service settings.
Which version makes sense for your setup?
If you already own a PS4
Play the PS4 version if you are satisfied with its performance and want to avoid a hardware purchase. If you later move to PS5, compare the eligible upgrade cost with the price of the PS4/PS5 product, and confirm whether your copy is digital or disc.

If you already own a PS5
Use the native PS5 version when available. A PS4 copy running through backward compatibility is not the same as owning the native PS5 version and does not automatically provide its full features. Check the product platform and upgrade eligibility rather than relying on “playable on PS5” wording.
If you are buying a console specifically for Ragnarök
PS5 is the best version of this game, but buying a console for one title may not be cost-effective if you already have a PS4 and are happy with it. The hardware case is stronger if you also want other PS5 games, shorter system-wide loading, or benefits from a 4K/120Hz display. Do not treat an accessory or display upgrade as mandatory for this game.
If you are a digital-only or physical-media buyer
A digital-only PS5 owner should choose a digital PS4/PS5 product or eligible digital upgrade. A disc-drive PS5 owner can consider an eligible PS4 disc upgrade. Before buying a Store version, confirm the platform labels, region and total cost; product options and promotions can change.
