Co-streaming is an authorized live rebroadcast of an esports event with a creator’s own commentary, video, and community layered onto the main feed. It can put a tournament in front of audiences that may not watch an official channel, but it is not a blanket right to restream whatever is on screen. The event owner, platform, territory, invitation status, sponsor rules, and reporting requirements determine who may co-stream and what the resulting audience numbers mean.
What co-streaming actually is
In a co-stream, a creator receives permission to carry a current live event feed while adding original material such as spoken analysis, reactions, a face camera, graphics, or community chat. Twitch describes its co-streaming feature as a way for an approved creator to add their content and rebroadcast a main broadcaster’s live event to their own community, particularly for large special broadcasts such as esports tournaments.

Riot’s event-specific Teamfight Tactics (TFT) qualifier policy uses a similar boundary: co-streaming means rebroadcasting current live content while adding commentary and/or video. Uploading a recording after the fact, or showing another creator’s stream without meaningful original contribution, is not the same activity. A creator who simply captures an official feed without authorization is running an unapproved restream, not a legitimate co-stream.
Permission is always specific
There is no universal “co-streaming license.” Access can depend on the rights holder, an invitation or allowlist, the platform, the country where the creator is located, language rights, and the individual event’s rules. The TFT policy cited above applied to League Partner Program members and invited partners; it was not a general rule for every Riot competition. Other publishers can use different application processes, embargoes, feeds, or territory exclusions.

Why the creator layer matters
The official feed supplies production, observers, statistics, and rights-cleared pictures. The creator supplies context and a social reason to stay: explanations for new viewers, tactical disagreement, humor, fan rituals, and an active chat. That combination turns a broadcast into a community event without requiring the creator to produce a separate match.
Why publishers are investing in co-streaming
Reach beyond the official channel
A publisher can reach a creator’s established audience without expecting every fan to discover the tournament’s main channel. This is especially useful when a creator serves a particular language, region, game community, or viewing style. A creator can also explain unfamiliar formats and teams in real time, reducing the knowledge barrier that often keeps casual viewers away from esports.
More distribution, more measurement questions
Co-streaming puts the same event in many channel environments. That expands distribution, but it also makes the phrase “the audience” ambiguous. A person may watch ten minutes on an official channel, switch to a creator, and appear in several channel counts. A combined concurrent figure, a total-hours figure, and a survey response are measuring different things.

The commercial reason
Riot Games President of Publishing & Esports John Needham wrote that “Most of this revenue has historically come from sponsorship and, to a (much) lesser extent, media rights.” That context explains why rights holders care about extending an event’s reach while protecting the visibility and value of event sponsors. More creator distribution can make an event easier to find, but it does not automatically create a revenue share for every participating creator.
What the available audience evidence shows
The strongest public figures point to substantial co-streaming activity, while stopping short of proving that co-streaming alone caused the increases. Riot’s 2024 reporting connected audience growth to new formats and deeper co-streaming integrations. Stream Hatchet’s 2026 report provides a broad industry estimate for 2025. A Monitor Deloitte survey supplies a country-specific platform-use snapshot. These figures should not be added together.

| MSI 2023 average minute audience (AMA) | 58% year-over-year growth, reported by Riot Games in 2024 | Riot associated the increase with new formats and deeper co-streaming integrations; it does not isolate co-streaming’s independent effect. |
| Worlds 2023 average minute audience (AMA) | 65% year-over-year growth, reported by Riot Games in 2024 | The same combined explanation applies. AMA is an average-minute audience, not cumulative hours watched. |
| Co-streaming share in Stream Hatchet’s 2025 analysis | 50% of esports hours watched, totaling 1.4 billion hours | This is the report’s scope and methodology, not universal telemetry for every esports service or event. |
| Most-watched co-streamer in that report | Caedrel with 83 million hours watched in 2025 | A channel-level result identified by Stream Hatchet; it is not a claim that every creator sees comparable scale. |
| Saudi Arabia esports-content survey | In 2024, 64% of respondents used YouTube Gaming and 47% used Twitch for competition-related content | Monitor Deloitte’s 2025 survey finding for Saudi Arabia. It measures reported service use, not a global co-streaming share. |
AMA describes the average number of viewers present during each minute. Hours watched accumulate viewing time, so a long event can generate many hours without having a larger simultaneous audience. A survey percentage describes respondents who used a service. Keeping those denominators attached prevents a striking percentage from being treated as a universal ranking.
How platforms count and display collaborative audiences
Twitch Shared Viewership
Twitch’s Shared Viewership feature is designed for live collaborations in which two or more streamers share audio and/or video and enable Shared Chat. Twitch says the feature displays the total unique concurrent audience across participating channels, while each channel’s individual concurrent-viewer count remains visible. It can also affect popularity-based discovery sorting.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteShared Viewership is a platform collaboration tool, not automatically the same as the approved co-stream analytics Twitch describes for special events. Twitch says Shared Viewership does not affect a channel’s Path to Partner progress or the number of viewers served ads on that channel. Therefore, a combined number should not be read as a change to every channel’s monetization or qualification metric.
Approved co-stream analytics
For approved event co-streamers, Twitch says analytics can provide the main broadcaster with aggregated reach data. Aggregation helps an organizer understand distribution across authorized channels, but it still does not answer every commercial question. It may not reveal how many people were genuinely incremental, how many watched on another service, or how many saw a particular advertisement.
What a combined number cannot prove
- It does not prove that all viewers are unique across platforms.
- It does not establish how many people would have watched the official channel without a co-stream.
- It does not show whether a viewer watched an entire match or only a short segment.
- It does not, by itself, establish sponsor impressions, conversion, or a payment owed to a creator.

- Identify the rights holder and event policy. Look for the tournament’s current co-stream, watch-party, or creator-program announcement. Do not rely on a rule from a different game, season, or qualifier.
- Check eligibility. The policy may require an invitation, an allowlist position, membership in a partner program, geographic eligibility, a minimum audience, or a completed application.
- Confirm the permitted platform and territory. A permission for one service or country may not transfer to another. Verify language, regional feed, blackout, and simulcast restrictions.
- Read sponsor and ad provisions. Some policies require event sponsor segments to remain visible and prohibit covering, replacing, or muting them. Determine whether your own ads, overlays, or endorsements are restricted during those segments.
- Accept reporting and data duties. An event may request viewership data, channel details, or post-event reporting. Use the method and deadline specified by the organizer.
- Prepare an original commentary layer. A microphone is an optional creator-side tool for clear spoken analysis; it is not a viewing requirement and does not itself increase reach. Make the commentary substantive enough to distinguish the co-stream from an unattended feed.
- Plan moderation and failure handling. Assign chat moderators, know how to pause your relay if the rights holder changes instructions, and keep an approved backup statement ready for feed interruptions.
If a rule is silent, silence is not permission. Ask the rights holder or use the event’s stated application route rather than assuming that a public broadcast can be copied.

Do co-streams bring new viewers or split the audience?
They can do both, and the cited evidence does not establish a single outcome. A creator may bring people who would not have opened the official channel, creating incremental reach. Other viewers may move from the official broadcast to the creator because they prefer the commentary, leaving total event viewing higher while the official channel’s count falls. Many people may overlap across channels or services.
Riot’s 58% AMA increase for MSI 2023 and 65% increase for Worlds 2023 were attributed to new formats together with deeper co-streaming integrations. Because those elements changed at the same time, the figures are evidence of an association, not a controlled test of co-streaming alone. Stream Hatchet’s estimate that co-streaming channels represented half of esports hours in its 2025 analysis describes the scale of viewing routed through those channels, not a counterfactual showing what would have happened without them.
How an organizer could measure incrementality
- Compare official-channel and authorized co-stream audiences minute by minute, including simultaneous drops and gains.
- Deduplicate authenticated viewers where platforms and privacy rules allow, while documenting the method.
- Use post-event surveys to ask whether viewers discovered the event through a creator and whether they also watched the official feed.
- Separate reach, average concurrency, watch time, retention, and sponsor exposure instead of presenting one total as the answer.
Revenue, ads, and sponsor treatment
No universal co-streamer revenue split is established by the cited Twitch, TFT, or Riot materials. A creator might receive no direct event payment, a negotiated fee, platform advertising revenue, or another arrangement, but those terms are deal-specific. Do not infer a commission from permission to co-stream.
Sponsor protection is a recurring rule. Riot’s TFT policy said event sponsor segments could not be altered or covered. That condition can limit overlays, scene changes, commentary timing, or competing commercial messages. Twitch’s statement that Shared Viewership does not change the number of viewers served ads on a channel is likewise a platform rule, not proof that every event’s sponsor inventory is counted identically.

For organizers, the practical contract questions are: which feed is authorized, who owns ad inventory, whether creator overlays are allowed, what happens during sponsor segments, what data is shared, and whether any payment is tied to reach, hours, or a fixed fee. Put those terms in writing before the broadcast.
Platform expansion and regional limits
Riot announced that KICK would join its streaming platforms beginning with MSI 2026, carrying global and regional events across League of Legends Esports, VALORANT, and TFT. The announcement described China and Korea as excluded from that rollout and said the partnership would create additional creator and partner-program opportunities on KICK.
This is evidence of distribution expanding across platforms, not a promise that every event, country, language, or creator will have the same access. Platform availability can change by event and date. Check the current announcement and event policy before scheduling a co-stream, especially when a tournament has separate regional rights.

Before going live
- Save the written permission, event schedule, approved feed details, and sponsor instructions where the whole production team can see them.
- Set the stream title and category exactly as requested, and disclose that the broadcast is an authorized co-stream when the policy asks for that label.
- Test the microphone, camera, commentary mix, delay, and chat moderation without placing graphics over protected sponsor material.
- Prepare short explanations of teams, rules, and format changes so new viewers can follow without interrupting critical plays.
During the match
- Keep adding analysis or reaction rather than leaving the event feed unattended.
- Honor the event’s delay, spoiler, language, and sponsor requirements.
- Moderate harassment, spoilers from other matches, spam, and unauthorized links in chat.
- Watch for rights-holder messages. If permission is revoked or the feed changes, stop or adjust the relay as instructed.
After the event
- Submit the requested viewership or channel report by the stated deadline.
- Record what worked: discovery source, average concurrency, retention points, chat activity, and technical failures.
- Do not upload a replay or clip package unless the policy separately permits it; live co-stream permission may not cover later use.
What organizers should specify
A clear policy prevents both accidental infringement and misleading audience claims. It should state the eligible creator groups, application or invitation process, approved platforms, territories and languages, feed and delay rules, commentary expectations, sponsor and advertising treatment, data-reporting format, moderation standards, clip and replay rights, and the consequences of violating the terms.

Measurement language deserves equal precision. Define whether “viewers” means average concurrent viewers, peak concurrent viewers, unique accounts, cumulative hours, or an aggregate across authorized channels. State whether cross-platform deduplication is possible and whether the published number is an estimate. Without those definitions, a large combined total can be technically accurate yet commercially misunderstood.

Common edge cases
“The official stream is public, so can I mirror it?”
No. Public availability describes access for viewers, not redistribution rights. Use the event’s authorization process.
“If I add a webcam, is any rebroadcast allowed?”
Adding video alone does not override a rights restriction. Co-streaming requires both authorization and the original contribution described by the policy.
“Does appearing in a combined audience count make me a partner?”
No. Shared audience displays and approved event analytics are measurement features. They do not automatically change partner status, advertising eligibility, or payment terms.
