The safest arrangement is deliberately separated: RCon handles people and incidents, configuration files define how the server behaves, and a mod supplies capabilities that vanilla cannot. Each route has different security, restart and compatibility concerns.

The three administration routes
Choosing the right tool prevents common mistakes such as putting an RCon password in the wrong file or expecting passwordAdmin to create an RCon session.

RCon and configuration files are the vanilla foundation. Community Online Tools (COT) and VPPAdminTools are optional examples of the third route; their feature sets and installation requirements can change, so use the documentation shipped with the exact release you install.

Set up BattlEye RCon correctly
Use the BattlEye configuration file
RCon settings belong in BEServer_x64.cfg inside the BattlEye directory, not in serverDZ.cfg. Linux installations may use the lowercase filename beserver_x64.cfg. The file contains the RCon password, RCon port and restriction setting. Keep the file readable only by the account that runs the server where your host allows that level of permission.
Use a long, randomly generated password that is not reused for the game, hosting panel or operating-system account. Do not paste it into public Discord channels, screenshots or support tickets. If the host offers environment variables or a secret store, use that rather than committing the value to a repository.

Choose a separate RCon port
The RCon port must not be the same as a game port. A commonly suggested pattern is game port plus three: with game port 2302, RCon would be 2305. Treat that as a planning example, not a universal default; set the port explicitly in the file and in your firewall or hosting panel. Restart after changing it, then connect with an RCon client using the new port.

Installation sequence
- Stop the DayZ server so the BattlEye file is not overwritten while you edit it.
- Open the BattlEye directory and create or edit
BEServer_x64.cfg(or the lowercase Linux filename). - Set a strong password, an unused RCon port and the restriction value required by your host and BattlEye build.
- Confirm that the launch command points to the intended files.
-config=serverDZ.cfgselects the gameplay configuration, while-BEpath=selects a custom BattlEye directory when you need one. - Open only the RCon port to the administrators who need it; restrict the firewall source addresses when your hosting platform supports allow-lists.
- Start the server, connect from a trusted RCon client and run
playersbefore attempting a kick or ban.

Use player numbers only after checking the current players output; they can change as people connect and disconnect. Record the GUID, reason and duration for disciplinary actions so another administrator can understand the decision.
Restrictions and command differences
The RestrictRCon directive is a frequent source of surprises. CFTools guidance says a value of 1 blocks kick, ban and shutdown over RCon, and that the default when the directive is undefined is 1. Other guides describe the setting differently. Confirm the behavior on your BattlEye version and hosting image before relying on it; never assume a successful login means destructive commands are enabled.
Command spelling also varies in community instructions. Some list hash-prefixed forms such as #kick, #ban and #restart, while other RCon references do not provide a clean restart command and use a scheduler such as BEC for scheduled restarts. Test every command on a private instance, including the exact prefix, before using it on a public server. A restart scheduler is operational tooling, not a substitute for RCon moderation.

Use configuration files for persistent rules
serverDZ.cfg: identity and server behavior
serverDZ.cfg holds the server name, game password, player limit, time settings and network-related options. It is the place for rules that should be applied at every start, not for RCon credentials. Keep a dated backup before editing and change one group of settings at a time so a syntax error is easy to locate.
The setting named passwordAdmin is documented briefly as the password to become a server administrator. Community explanations disagree about what it unlocks, so do not treat it as an RCon password or assume that setting it grants every administrative function. Give it a distinct secret, and verify its actual behavior in the DayZ build and hosting environment you operate.
types.xml: loot economy
types.xml controls every spawnable item, including rarity, quantities and locations. It is therefore an economy tool rather than an access-control tool. Make a copy before changing nominal or minimum quantities, and test a small set of items first; aggressive changes can make a survival server feel empty or flood it with gear.

Whitelist and ban files
To run a private or application-only server, set enableWhitelist = 1 in serverDZ.cfg and maintain profiles/whitelist.txt. Put one Steam64 ID on each line. A malformed ID or an accidental blank-space character can keep an intended player out, so copy IDs carefully and test with a non-admin account.

Use a finite duration when the incident policy calls for a suspension; reserve permanent entries for cases that justify them. Access-file changes are re-read on restart, so schedule a restart during a quiet period. RCon’s loadBans can reload bans without a full restart when your build supports that command, but do not assume it reloads whitelist changes.
Some administration guides state that verifySignatures = 2 is the only supported value and that it requires mod keys. That advice is not consistent across all guides and server versions. Check the current Bohemia Interactive and host documentation for your exact build before changing signature enforcement, particularly when adding mods.

Add an in-game admin mod only when needed
What mods add
Vanilla RCon can identify, warn, kick and ban players, but it cannot give you a cursor-driven in-game control panel. COT and VPPAdminTools are commonly used to add teleportation, item spawning, free camera, ESP, god mode, spectating and weather controls. Those powers are useful for event staff, bug investigation and moderation, but they also make abuse or accidental disruption much easier.
Install and launch safely
- Choose a release compatible with the server’s DayZ version and with the other mods already installed.
- Read that release’s installation notes for key files, permission groups and required dependencies. Do not copy an old permission file into a new major version without checking its format.
- Place the mod where the server host expects workshop content and configure the server-side permission file so ordinary players cannot open the tool.
- Use the appropriate launch parameters. One documented pattern is
-mod=@CF;@VPPAdminTools -servermod=@ServerSideOnly; replace names only with the folders and dependencies required by your chosen release. - Start a private test instance, log in with an administrator account and verify teleport, inventory, spectate and weather actions one by one.
- After validation, announce maintenance, install on production, and keep a rollback copy of the previous mod files and configuration.
Keep high-impact powers limited to a small staff group. Disable or remove permissions that are not needed for a role, and review the list whenever staff change. Mod features change over time, so treat the release documentation as authoritative for that version rather than assuming an older tutorial still applies.

Plan ports, firewall rules and network access
DayZ deployments commonly use ports 2302 through 2306 for game, Steam query and voice or Steam traffic. Open the range required by your host, then set the Steam query and RCon ports explicitly instead of relying on an undocumented default. The exact allocation differs between providers, and there is no dependable universal default for query or RCon.
- Keep the RCon port separate from every game port.
- Allow RCon only from administrator addresses where possible.
- Do not expose file shares, SSH or a hosting-panel account just to provide RCon access.
- Change the RCon secret immediately if an administrator leaves or the credential appears in a log.
- Monitor failed RCon logins and unexpected ban or kick activity.
Operational workflows that avoid mistakes
Handling a suspected cheater
- Run
playersand note the exact player number, name and available identifier. - Observe or obtain evidence according to your server rules; do not punish a similarly named player by mistake.
- Use
say <number>for a private warning when appropriate, or broadcast a neutral maintenance message withsay -1. - Kick for an immediate safety issue. If the evidence supports a ban, use a duration and reason, then record the GUID or Steam64 ID.
- Use
bansto verify the entry. If an appeal succeeds, remove it withremoveBanand document who approved the change.
Preparing a scheduled restart
RCon has no consistently documented universal restart command. Use your host’s scheduler or a restart tool such as BEC, broadcast the time with say -1, and allow players enough warning to leave dangerous situations. Test the scheduler privately because command prefixes and permissions differ between installations.
Recovering from a failed change
- If the server will not start after editing
serverDZ.cfg, restore the last known-good copy and reapply changes individually. - If RCon cannot connect, check the BattlEye path, filename case on Linux, firewall rule, selected port and password before changing other settings.
- If moderation commands are rejected, inspect
RestrictRCon, confirm the command syntax for your build and test on a private server. - If a whitelist player is denied, verify the Steam64 ID, the location and permissions of
whitelist.txt, and restart to reload it. - If a mod causes crashes or missing controls, remove it from the launch line, restore the previous version and confirm dependency and key files before trying again.
A practical tool stack for most servers
Start with RCon, serverDZ.cfg, types.xml, whitelist.txt and ban.txt. This covers live moderation, persistent rules, loot tuning and access control without adding a mod dependency. Add COT or VPPAdminTools only when staff need in-game inspection or event powers that RCon cannot provide. Keep separate secrets, separate backups and a written permission policy, then test every command and configuration change on a private instance before exposing it to players.
