Prioritize three things early in Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii: learn when to use each of Majima’s fighting styles, check your crew and ship before sailing, and pursue treasure, challenges, and bounties as complementary ways to build your pirate standing and resources. Ship battles move from steering and cannon fire to boarding, so preparation at sea matters as much as your approach on deck.
Choose Majima’s fighting style for the situation
Majima can switch between two real-time styles: Mad Dog, built around fast close-range attacks, and Sea Dog, which adds cutlasses and pirate equipment. Neither is established as universally strongest; treat them as different toolkits and change styles to suit the encounter.
Mad Dog: speed and close-range pressure
Mad Dog combines punches and kicks with knife attacks for quick strikes and aerial combos. Dealing damage fills the Madness Gauge, which lets Majima summon a shadowy doppelganger. Try this style when you want to stay mobile and keep pressure on enemies at close range. SEGA’s official gameplay overview describes the style and its gauge.
Sea Dog: cutlasses and pirate gear
Sea Dog pairs dual cutlasses with equipment that gives Majima more ways to attack. SEGA names three sidearms: the Cutlass Boomerang for broad damage, a charged Pistol shot that creates explosive blowback, and the Chain Hook, which pulls Majima rapidly toward enemies. Dark Instruments can summon creatures, but their availability depends on story progress. Use Sea Dog when you want to mix weapon attacks and gear rather than relying only on close-range strikes. SEGA’s announcement describes these tools; it does not establish a single best style for every fight.

Prepare the Goromaru before a ship fight
Before setting sail, open Prepare to Sail and review three things: crew formation, ship equipment, and firepower. SEGA says the Goromaru can be reinforced and its weapons changed, with options including flamethrowers and lasers. Upgrades and formation are worth checking before an encounter rather than treating ship combat as an afterthought. See SEGA’s gameplay overview for the ship-preparation features.
- Crew formation: consider who will be useful if the fight moves to boarding.
- Equipment: reinforce the ship and choose weapons to improve its readiness.
- Firepower: check the available weapons before leaving port.
Handle ship battles in phases
Ship combat is a sequence: maneuver to avoid incoming bombardment, return cannon fire against the enemy hull, then board once the target has taken enough damage. The transition matters: cannon volleys weaken the ship, while boarding turns the encounter into a crew fight. SEGA’s official description outlines this flow.

After boarding
Once the enemy ship is weakened enough, boarding shifts the action to a deck battle. Crew members have different skills: SEGA distinguishes offensive specialists from members focused on healing. Build your formation with the kind of support you need, rather than assuming every crew member serves the same purpose.
SEGA says players can recruit over 100 seafarers on its official gameplay page; that is a publisher figure, not a requirement to recruit them all or evidence that one particular crew composition is optimal.

Build pirate rank through several progression routes
Treasure, challenges, and bounties support different parts of progression. Treasure can provide money and reputation, challenges raise reputation and pirate rank, and bounties pay cash that can help strengthen Majima and upgrade the ship. SEGA also says higher pirate rank unlocks benefits. These routes complement one another; the available information does not establish an objectively fastest way to farm progress.
Look for treasure
Use hints from the Treasury of Treasures to discover treasure. Its documented rewards include money and reputation, making exploration a useful route if you want to search while building your pirate standing.
Complete challenges
Challenges raise reputation and pirate rank. Fit them into your play as they become relevant rather than expecting treasure alone to cover every progression goal.

Pursue bounties
Bounties pay cash. That money can go toward Majima’s strength and ship upgrades, connecting bounty hunting to both land combat and sea readiness.
