Before heading into the Zone, choose a destination, prepare at a hub, and leave enough room in your pack to move. On the road, use cover and conserve supplies, treat bleeding and radiation with the right items, and find shelter when an Emission begins. These fundamentals come from GSC Game World’s Beginner’s Guide & FAQs; update-dependent details below are dated because the game has continued to change.
What should you do before leaving a hub?
Pick a destination and mark it
Decide whether the trip is for a quest or exploration. Check the quest log in your PDA, or pick an unexplored location on the map, then mark your destination so the compass can guide you. A clear goal helps you avoid wandering into extra risks without a reason to be there.

Prepare supplies and equipment
At a hub, sort your inventory and stash or sell items you do not need. Stock first-aid kits, bandages, ammunition, anti-rads, food, and energy drinks, and ask a technician to repair or upgrade your equipment. Check which artifacts are installed before setting out so your loadout suits the trip.
Keep your pack manageable
An overloaded backpack leaves less room for anything you find and makes it harder to get away from mutants. Treat carrying capacity as a practical safety margin, not just a limit to fill: take what the expedition needs and leave the rest stored.

How do you handle anomalies and Emissions?
Approach anomalous fields deliberately
Use bolts and a detector when traversing anomalous fields and looking for artifacts. Do not assume a single route works everywhere: GSC’s beginner guide recommends these tools but does not provide a location-by-location route.
Find shelter when an Emission starts
Know where shelter is before you need it. GSC’s guide is explicit: “The only way to survive an Emission is to wait it out in a shelter.” Do not rely on outrunning the event; head for shelter and wait until it passes.
How can you make combat supplies last?
Use cover and match your weapon to the encounter
Take cover, use a weapon suited to the distance, and conserve ammunition and medical supplies. If an encounter is too dangerous, retreat rather than spending scarce resources trying to force a win.
If you run out of ammunition
Search enemy bodies and caches for ammunition, switch to another weapon if you have one, use your knife, or escape. Scavenging, trading, and completing missions can also replenish supplies between encounters.

How do you treat injuries and radiation?
Match the treatment to the condition: use bandages for bleeding, and anti-rads or vodka for radiation. Put useful items in quick-access slots so they are available when needed, rather than buried in your inventory.
How does saving work?
Manual saves are generally available outside combat and story-restricted moments, and the game also autosaves at key points. Save when the game allows it, especially before setting out or after reaching a safe point; do not assume a manual save will be available in the middle of a fight.

GSC announced Update 2.0 on September 1, 2026. The update included an Unreal Engine 5.5.4 upgrade, A-Life improvements, binoculars, weapons and scopes, fog, PDA statistics, custom difficulty rules, and more than 500 bug fixes. The official patch archive search result also surfaced version 2.0.5, dated September 10, 2026. Check the official patch archive for later changes; the available update information does not establish whether a newer hotfix has shipped.
Difficulty advice from the original 2024 beginner FAQ needs context: it says campaign difficulty is chosen at the start and cannot be changed mid-campaign. Later, Update 1.7 added Master Difficulty and Expedition Mode, while Update 2.0 lists Custom Rules difficulty. The 2.0 announcement does not detail those custom settings, so consult the latest in-game options or patch notes rather than relying on the older FAQ as a complete list. GSC describes A-Life 2.0 as the system that lets the Zone live independently of the player’s actions; the 2.0 announcement also lists A-Life improvements.
