Start with four habits: protect enough stamina to dodge, spend Focus when an enemy is vulnerable, use Keeper’s Shrines as route anchors, and invest Sparks in problems you are actually facing. Black Myth: Wukong is an action RPG rooted in Chinese mythology and based on Journey to the West; its staff techniques, spells, abilities, weapons, and equipment are tools to combine, not a single required build. What should you learn first?
Learn to manage stamina before trying to maximize damage. Attacks and dodges both draw on your ability to keep acting, so an extended combo can leave you unable to respond when an enemy strikes. Pair that with deliberate Focus use: build pressure, watch for a real opening, then spend Focus on a heavy attack rather than using it simply because the meter is ready.
Make Keeper’s Shrines part of your route, too. Activate each one you reach and notice the branches and enemy groups between it and the next encounter. If the approach to a boss repeatedly costs you healing, practice that stretch before treating the boss itself as the only problem.
Use a repeatable combat loop
- Attack briefly. Use a controlled light-attack string rather than committing to every possible hit.
- Keep stamina for the response. Stop the string while you can still dodge. If you regularly finish an exchange with no stamina, shorten it.
- Watch the enemy. Look for a committed attack, stagger, spell effect, or recovery animation. These are clearer chances to act than an enemy who is still pressuring you.
- Dodge, then punish. Use the opening after a successful dodge or recovery to build pressure or spend Focus on a heavy attack.
- Reset your position. Avoid turning one safe opening into a long exchange that drains the stamina you need for the next attack.
Focus timing is part of this loop. Xbox Wire notes that a Perfect Dodge restores a portion of the Focus Points used for heavy attacks; treat that as a reward for timing, not a reason to dodge recklessly. How to spend early Sparks and practice in the first hour
Use early Sparks to make ordinary fights and repeated attempts more manageable. Broad improvements to survival, stamina comfort, and basic staff reliability are sensible starting points; add narrower skills when a particular failure shows what you need. There is no established mathematically best build in the cited guidance, and a skill that suits one player’s style may not solve another player’s bottleneck.
- Activate the shrine before moving on. Note the route back to it and any branch you have not explored.
- Practice on ordinary enemies. Learn how long a light string feels safe, how far your dodge carries you, and how much stamina you need left to respond.
- Shorten the combo when stamina runs low. Preserve a dodge rather than forcing one more hit.
- Learn the early Immobilize opportunity. In the Bullguard sequence, wait until the enemy has committed and is close enough for a short punish before casting.
- Choose upgrades in response to a problem. Start with broadly useful comfort, then spend on a more specific skill when an encounter repeatedly exposes a weakness.
- Plan resources before a boss. Decide what you want to conserve—Focus, mana, medicine, Spirit, or gourd uses—and heal before a likely lethal hit rather than waiting for a panic moment.
PlayStation’s description emphasizes combining techniques and equipment around your own approach; Xbox Wire’s author says he personally favored Smash Stance after upgrading it. That preference is an individual play note, not proof that Smash Stance is objectively best.

Should you explore Chapter 1?
Spoiler-light: Explore selectively for useful rewards and route knowledge rather than clearing every branch by default. Xbox Wire highlights Chapter 1 Yaoguai Chiefs, Meditation Spots—which its advice says each grant a Spark—and a three-bell route leading to a secret area and the Fireproof Mantle. These are optional goals to weigh against the time and risk of exploring.
If you want the Wandering Wight Spirit, pay attention to the bell-route order: an independent first-hour checklist advises resolving the Wandering Wight before completing the secret area reached through the three bells. This is route-sensitive optional content, so do not treat the timing as a universal requirement for every player or objective. How to decide what to improve next
After a difficult fight, identify the repeated problem before spending Sparks or changing your approach. These are useful decision checks, not a ranking of builds:
- You run out of stamina during exchanges: shorten the attack string and prioritize stamina comfort.
- You take damage while trying to attack: wait for a clearer commitment or recovery before punishing.
- You have Focus but cannot use it safely: focus on creating openings through dodges, stagger, spells, or visible recovery.
- You reach a boss already low on healing: practice the route and enemy group between the shrine and the arena.
- You are considering optional exploration: compare the reward you want with the time and risk of the detour.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I fight Wandering Wight right away?
Only if you want to tackle it then. If you want its Spirit, the March 10, 2026 first-hour checklist advises resolving the encounter before completing the three-bell secret-area route; the timing is route-sensitive.
