Start with the right Wowza tutorial for the product you have: Wowza Video is a hosted cloud service, while Wowza Streaming Engine is a media server you install or run in Docker. For a first OBS stream, follow the Wowza Video RTMP quick start; for a self-managed server, use Wowza’s Streaming Engine trial and choose a source path that fits your setup.
Choose the right Wowza product before you watch
The two products have different setup steps and playback paths, so check the name in your account or trial first.
| Path | What you set up | Typical first-stream source | Playback |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wowza Video | A hosted live stream in Wowza’s cloud account interface | OBS sending an RTMP stream to the connection details Wowza provides | A Wowza-hosted playback page is available |
| Wowza Streaming Engine | A media server installed on a supported system or started through Docker Compose | OBS, FFmpeg, a simulated stream, or webcam over WebRTC, depending on the trial path | Test through a separately configured playback path |
This is a workflow comparison, not a performance test. Wowza’s [Get started with Wowza Video] guide is marked Legacy and was updated February 8, 2024. Its interface references may not match the current account experience. The newer [RTMP live-stream quick start] was updated February 24, 2025. The older guide refers to video.wowza.com, while the newer quick start refers to app.wowza.com; follow the current interface if labels or hostnames differ.
Videos and guides for your first Wowza Video stream
Start with Wowza’s RTMP quick start for OBS
For a typical beginner setup—OBS as the encoder and Wowza Video as the destination—the [RTMP quick start] is the best starting point. OBS is not the Wowza service: it captures or assembles your video and sends it to the server and stream credentials Wowza supplies.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Sign in to Wowza Video and create a live stream using the current account interface.
- Copy the generated connection details, including the server address and stream name or key, along with any source authentication details shown.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose a custom streaming service, and enter the server and stream key/name from Wowza. Add source authentication if the Wowza setup requires it.
- Start the live stream in Wowza first, then click Start Streaming in OBS.
- Check the incoming preview and test playback on the hosted page. If the page or labels differ from the tutorial, use the current Wowza account interface rather than assuming the Legacy guide is exact.
Wowza’s [Legacy getting-started guide] also walks through the hosted playback page and stopping the stream. Wowza’s [Quick live stream guide], updated February 24, 2025, is another current reference for going live.
Stop the stream and check billing behavior
Stop a Wowza Video stream when the event is finished. The Legacy getting-started guide warns that transcoding charges can accrue after a stream is started even when no active input is arriving. It also says idle streams are automatically stopped after 20 minutes; because that timing comes from a 2024 Legacy guide, check current billing guidance before relying on it as present policy.

Videos and guides for Wowza Streaming Engine
Choose an Engine trial route
Wowza’s [Streaming Engine getting-started page] presents Docker Compose and several ways to supply a stream. The option you choose depends on whether you already have an encoder or want to try a camera-free path.
- OBS: Use this if you already have a video source and want a familiar encoder workflow.
- FFmpeg: Choose this for a command-line publishing workflow.
- Simulated stream: Try the Docker Compose trial without a webcam or other camera hardware.
- Webcam over WebRTC: Use this route if you want to publish a live camera source. A USB webcam for live streaming is optional for this path, not a general requirement for trying Engine.
The [Docker Compose trial guide] explains the trial deployment and source choices. For a broader overview, use Wowza’s [Streaming Engine getting-started documentation].

Use the developer walkthrough if you want a local proof of concept
Don Kianian’s Wowza article, [Setting Up Your First Live Stream with Wowza Streaming Engine], published November 12, 2025, is a developer-oriented path combining Engine and Flowplayer in a local Docker proof of concept. It is not the same as a simple hosted Wowza Video tutorial. The article says: “The easiest way to create a source stream is by using a tool like OBS Studio, which is a free and open-source video recording and live-streaming software.”
Install and verify Engine
Before following an installation tutorial, check the current operating-system requirements and firewall setup in Wowza’s [install and configure documentation]. It was updated July 24, 2026, and notes version 4.9.5 added support for ARM-based Linux executables. Version and system support can change, so confirm compatibility for your target system on the current install page.

- Install Engine or start the documented Docker Compose trial, following the current instructions for your operating system.
- Confirm that the server is reachable through the required firewall ports and that you are using the correct server URL.
- Publish from your chosen source, then use Engine Manager to confirm that the incoming stream appears.
- Test playback using the playback path configured for that Engine application; do not assume that Engine automatically provides the same hosted page as Wowza Video.
For conceptual orientation to Manager, Wowza’s [Manager basics and live stream setup] video/article dates to February 6, 2020. Its interface details may be dated, so use it for concepts and verify actual controls in your current Engine Manager.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check source authentication and connection details
When Engine does not receive a source, verify the transport, server URL, application, stream name, and credentials before changing encoder settings. Wowza’s [live-source connection documentation], updated September 17, 2026, says RTMP- and RTSP-based Engine sources require source username and password by default. Make sure the publisher’s credentials match the source authentication configured for the Engine application.

Troubleshoot a first Wowza stream
| Symptom | Likely check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| OBS connects but Wowza shows no incoming video | Stream started in the right order; correct server and stream name/key | Start the Wowza Video live stream before starting OBS; re-copy the connection details from the current account interface. |
| Engine rejects an RTMP or RTSP publisher | Source authentication | Check the configured source username and password; Wowza enables authentication by default for these source types. |
| Engine cannot be reached or playback fails | Server URL, firewall, application and playback configuration | Verify the install requirements and ports, confirm the incoming stream in Manager, and test the Engine playback path you configured. |
| A tutorial’s page or controls do not match | Product and tutorial date | Confirm whether the tutorial is for Wowza Video or Streaming Engine and prioritize the current account interface and documentation over older screen descriptions. |
| No webcam is available for the Engine trial | Chosen input method | Use the simulated stream, OBS, or FFmpeg option instead; a camera is only needed for a camera-based route. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps looping uploaded videos 24/7, that is a different workflow from configuring Wowza as a live-source or media-server platform. StreamNeo is a cloud service for YouTube: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera feed, and your computer can stay off. It supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and includes a free first day with no card required. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo, or start your free day.
