Start by identifying whether the problem is a missing capture-card device, a black or stuttering card feed, poor image quality, or missing audio. A capture card normally appears in Streamlabs Desktop as a Video Capture Device; Game Capture is a different source and needs a different troubleshooting path. The steps below follow Streamlabs’ capture-card guidance, last updated April 22, 2025, with platform- and model-specific directions called out where they apply.

First, identify the source and symptom

In the Sources list, check which source is failing before changing settings. If the source is a Video Capture Device fed by your card, use the capture-card steps below. If the source is Game Capture and only a game is black, skip to the separate Game Capture section. Window Capture and general desktop audio are also separate from a capture card’s video and audio inputs.

  • Device missing: The card does not appear in the Video Capture Device properties.
  • No video: The card is selected, but its preview is black or empty.
  • Stuttering or poor image: Video appears but is unstable or lower quality than expected.
  • No audio: The capture card’s sound is absent, or you cannot hear it through headphones. Those are not necessarily the same problem.

Exact steps can vary by card model, operating system, console or second-PC setup, and cabling. Change one thing at a time so you can tell whether a step affected the issue.

Fix a missing capture card or a black card feed

1. Close other apps and remove duplicate device sources

Close the card maker’s utility and any other streaming, recording, or video app that might have the capture card open. Streamlabs’ guidance is: “Close out of any other software that could be using the device.” — Kevin, Streamlabs.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

In Streamlabs, avoid creating a separate capture-card source in every scene. Remove duplicate capture-card sources from your scenes, add the card once, then use Add from existing in other scenes to share that source. If the card still appears unavailable, restart the computer to release a device that a background process may still hold.

2. Select the actual capture-card device

  1. In the Sources panel, add or open a Video Capture Device source.
  2. Open its properties and choose the entry corresponding to your capture card or its vendor driver.
  3. Do not select a similarly named webcam or unrelated device. Some models require a vendor utility or a particular device entry; follow the model-specific instructions rather than assuming every card is listed the same way.

For example, Streamlabs’ instructions for the Elgato 4K60 Pro are specific to that card. Do not apply them to a different Elgato model or another manufacturer’s hardware without confirming compatibility.

3. Verify the signal path and source device

Check that the console or second computer is connected to the card’s input, and that the card is connected to the streaming computer through its intended interface. Confirm the source device selection again after reconnecting cables or changing ports.

If you are capturing PS4 gameplay, Streamlabs’ guide says to disable HDCP in Settings > System on the PS4. This is a PS4-specific step, not a universal fix for capture cards or other consoles.

4. Check the card maker’s driver or utility

If the device is still absent or not producing a signal, check the card manufacturer’s current support page for the correct model, driver, or utility. Streamlabs links to resources for AVerMedia, Elgato, and Razer, and describes a Device Manager reinstall path for Magewell or Blackmagic devices. Download only from the manufacturer and confirm that the instructions match your model and operating system; vendor downloads and interface steps may change.

5. Consider USB power settings only when relevant

For USB-connected Elgato capture cards, Streamlabs suggests trying the Windows High Performance power mode and disabling USB selective suspend. These are model-context troubleshooting options, not settings every capture-card user needs to change. If using them, note the original power settings so you can restore them if they do not help.

Fix stuttering or poor capture-card video

If the picture stutters

  1. In the Video Capture Device properties, confirm that the selected device is the actual card.
  2. Try setting Buffering to Disable in that source’s properties, then check whether the feed becomes steadier.
  3. If there is no improvement, restore the original setting and continue checking the signal path and the card’s model-specific guidance.

Disabling buffering is an option to test, not a guaranteed cure. Avoid changing unrelated audio-monitoring settings to fix a video-only stutter.

If an Elgato feed looks poor

Streamlabs’ image-quality suggestions are Elgato-oriented. If you use an Elgato card, close Streamlabs and inspect the Elgato software’s settings: Streamlabs suggests setting the Quality slider to Best, reviewing standard-definition conversion and stretch options, and trying a custom 1920×1080 resolution when appropriate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before selecting 1920×1080, confirm that the card and incoming signal support that resolution. A custom resolution cannot make an unsupported input or card produce a higher-quality signal.

Fix missing capture-card audio

First determine whether audio is missing from the stream or only from your own headphones. A moving mixer meter means audio is reaching the mixer; it does not by itself mean your chosen monitoring device is playing it.

Check whether audio reaches the mixer

  1. Confirm that the console or other source is producing sound.
  2. Watch the relevant capture-card channel in the Streamlabs mixer while sound is playing.
  3. If its meter does not move, inspect the Video Capture Device source properties, including Audio Output Mode and any custom audio-device selection.
  4. Check that the mixer channel is not muted.

If the meter moves but you cannot hear audio

Check the Windows playback output and Streamlabs’ Audio Monitoring Device selection. Monitoring controls what you hear locally; it is separate from whether audio is captured for the stream. Enabling Monitor and Output can cause an echo if the same sound reaches your headphones through another route, so use it only when needed and check for duplicate monitoring paths.

Use console-specific audio routing only for the matching setup

Streamlabs notes that a USB-only PS4 headset cannot send its audio through the capture card. Its guide also describes changing PS4 output to TV or an AV amplifier for supported headset configurations, and gives an Xbox One party-chat output setting. These directions depend on the console and headset wiring; do not apply them to other consoles or assume they fit every PS4 or Xbox audio setup.

If the failing source is Game Capture

A black Game Capture source is not the same as a black Video Capture Device from a capture card. If you have confirmed the source is Game Capture, Streamlabs suggests trying these separate steps:

  • Delete the Game Capture source and add it again.
  • Restart Streamlabs as administrator.
  • Disable third-party overlays that may interfere with game capture.
  • Update Streamlabs and relevant software or drivers.
  • Try borderless or window capture for the game.

These suggestions address game-capture behavior; they do not replace checking the capture card’s device selection and signal path.

Quick symptom-to-check guide

Symptom First checks Next relevant step
Card missing from the source device list Close competing apps; remove duplicate sources; confirm the device entry. Restart the computer, then consult the card maker’s model-specific driver or utility guidance.
Card selected, but preview is black Verify the source type, selected card, and console or second-PC signal path. Use platform-specific steps only when applicable, such as the PS4 HDCP setting for gameplay capture.
Video stutters Confirm the selected capture device. Try disabling Buffering in the Video Capture Device properties.
Elgato image looks poor Check the Elgato software’s Quality setting and conversion or stretch options. Try a custom resolution only if the card and input support it.
No audio meter activity Confirm the source produces sound; inspect source audio mode and custom device selection; check mute state. For console chat or headset issues, use only the routing steps that match that console and wiring.
Mixer meter moves, but headphones are silent Check Windows playback output and Streamlabs’ Audio Monitoring Device. Inspect monitoring mode and duplicate audio paths for echo.
Game Capture is black Confirm that the source is Game Capture, not Video Capture Device. Re-add the source, run as administrator, disable overlays, update software, or try borderless/window capture.

Cost and when replacement hardware makes sense

Do not buy a replacement card just because it is missing from Streamlabs or has a black preview: an app conflict, wrong source device, signal-path issue, or audio route can produce similar symptoms. Consider replacing hardware only after checking the model, host compatibility, supported input and output formats, and the resolution and frame rate your setup needs. The cited troubleshooting guidance does not endorse a particular replacement model.

Or let it run in the cloud

Streamlabs Desktop and a capture card are for capturing a live hardware input. If your goal is instead to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a different kind of setup: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube.
