Those habits help more than memorizing a build: Owlcat’s turn-based CRPG asks you to manage position, actions, and battle resources while exploring the Koronus Expanse aboard a voidship.
How to plan a turn before committing
Preview movement and check line of sight
Click an available movement tile once to preview your character’s position. Use the preview to check whether the move leaves a target in line of sight and whether your abilities will still reach. Click the tile again to confirm. This is especially useful before stepping out from cover or spending movement to reach a target. Owlcat’s combat guide describes this movement preview.
Read ability restrictions before using an attack
A normal attack usually ends your ability to move again, and you normally get only one attack in a turn. Some Doctrine-granted abilities can change those limits. Hover over an ability before using it: flashing red icons show which actions it blocks. Check those restrictions before you spend an attack or movement point on a sequence that will not work.
Make cover and weapon shape work for you
Use cover as protection, not as a guarantee
Partial and full cover provide different levels of protection, and cover is directional: an enemy can threaten an exposed flank. Smaller cover objects can also be destroyed, so avoid building your whole plan around one piece of protection. As Owlcat’s guide puts it, “Cover is useful to shield yourself against incoming fire.”

Choose attacks by their geometry
Some weapons affect more than the target you select. Volley fire covers a three-tile-wide direction, with the center target more likely to be hit. Flamers and shotguns use cone attacks that, according to Owlcat’s guide, ignore cover. Bolters and sniper rifles can penetrate a target and hit enemies behind it; heavy weapons may push enemies into obstacles or other foes. Before firing, consider the angle, the enemies behind your target, and where a knockback might send them.
Manage Momentum, Heroic Acts, and Desperate Measures
Damage and kills build Momentum. Once it is high enough, you can spend it to activate a Heroic Act. Desperate Measures become available when the party has taken substantial damage and Momentum is low, but they come with significant negative effects. Treat them as a risky response to a deteriorating fight, not as a free extra action. Owlcat’s guide explains these battle-state resources but does not give a numerical threshold that applies universally.
Use charges and psychic powers deliberately
Clear a path before charging
A charge can provide an additional attack, but it requires a clear, straight path. An ally in the way can prevent the charge, so check the route before committing to it.
Watch the risks of repeated psychic powers
Frequent psychic power use disturbs the veil and raises the risk of Perils of the Warp. The guide does not provide a numerical formula for that risk, so do not assume a fixed safe number of casts. Use powers with their battlefield benefit in mind and pay attention to in-game warnings and tooltips.

- SAS soldiers wage a guerrilla war deep behind enemy lines in this stealthy WW2 action game for 1-4 players.
- STRIKE FROM THE SHADOWS: Take down enemy patrols and sentries with the vast array of tools at your disposal, from rifles, explosives and grenades to vehicles, traps and your trusty fighting knife.
- LEAVE NO TRACE: Move quickly and quietly to complete your objectives. Kill silently and hide the bodies to avoid detection.
- Supports solo or cooperative play.
Build a party around complementary roles
The companions are designed with different strengths rather than one shared combat role. Owlcat’s official game overview describes Abelard as a melee damage dealer who can taunt and shield, Idira as an unsanctioned psyker with support and ranged psychic attacks, Yrliet as a precise ranger, Argenta as a bolter and flamer user, Cassia as a character who can debuff enemies and strengthen allies, and Heinrix as a mix of melee and psychic powers.
Use those descriptions to try combinations that cover different needs—for example, a front-line character alongside ranged damage and support. They do not establish a universally optimal party or a level-by-level build. Difficulty, character development, and your preferred tactics all affect what works. Read highlighted terms and tooltips in-game when an ability or rule is unfamiliar; the game’s Warhammer 40,000 setting does not need to be familiar before you can learn its combat systems.

Check your installed version before following build-specific advice
The game has continued to receive updates, and rollout can differ by platform. Owlcat’s news index lists The Infinite Museion DLC and major update 1.6 on June 11, 2026, and a Processional of the Damned preview dated September 24, 2026. Owlcat’s Steam announcements list hotfix 1.6.1.514 on July 20, 2026; its September announcement reports a delay for Processional of the Damned. The preview is not evidence that the DLC has been released. Check the version installed on your platform before relying on advice tied to a particular build or bug. Owlcat’s news index and official Steam announcements provide update context.
Older patch notes should be read as historical, not as a description of the current build. For example, Owlcat’s notes for update 1.2.0.25 describe turn-order balance changes, buffs to Sanctioned Psykers and Pyromancy, late-game scaling adjustments, inventory and level-up interface improvements, and a one-time free respecialization for party members in existing saves after mechanics changes. Those notes document that release’s changes; they do not establish what is optimal now. Owlcat’s 1.2.0.25 patch notes.

What these tips do—and do not—settle
Owlcat’s combat guide is a practical basis for learning ground battles: it explains movement previews, action restrictions, cover, weapon patterns, Momentum, charges, and psychic-power risk. It does not establish current optimal archetype builds, detailed ship-combat upgrade priorities, universal difficulty rankings, or fixed Perils of the Warp odds. For those decisions, use the game’s current tooltips and consider the installed version and difficulty rather than treating any single build recommendation as definitive.
