Short answer: Eternal Darkness Recomp is a community static recompilation of the 2002 GameCube game that currently runs on Windows, macOS, Linux and Steam Deck. Version 0.9.0 adds four save-anywhere slots, keeps the original memory-card system, supports the European GEDP01 disc image only, and offers a documented HD texture-pack workflow. Native achievements and a general gameplay-mod loader are not documented. The project can render at up to 4K and offers modern presentation features, but published 4K/60 claims are targets rather than independently verified guarantees.
What Eternal Darkness Recomp is
Eternal Darkness Recomp is not a conventional emulator port or a commercial remaster. It is a community static recompilation of Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem, originally released for Nintendo GameCube in 2002. Static recompilation translates the game’s original PowerPC code into C, compiles that code for the computer or handheld running it, and supplies GameCube behavior and rendering through the project’s GXRuntime and gxcore layers.

The current official repository labels the release Version 0.9.0. Builds are available for macOS, Windows and Linux, including Steam Deck use. The repository does not contain Nintendo game assets. You must create an image from a legally owned disc and provide that image to the program.

The most important compatibility restriction is regional: the current recomp build requires the European GameCube release identified as GEDP01. A United States image identified as GEDE01 is explicitly unsupported. A correctly dumped but unsupported-region disc will not become compatible through a setting change.

Does the recomp support save-anywhere?
Yes. The pause menu adds four save-anywhere slots. Each slot captures the whole game moment, giving you a convenient snapshot system in addition to the original game’s memory-card saves.
How the two save systems coexist
- Recomp slots: Four pause-menu slots intended for saving at convenient points during play. They capture the complete moment rather than behaving like a traditional checkpoint.
- Original card saves: The emulated GameCube memory-card system remains available, with cards in slots A and B. Existing game logic that expects a memory card continues to use this system.
- Disk location: Recomp-created slots are stored in a
saves/directory. The original card files use the nameed-GEDP01-slot-a.dolcard, with an optional slot-B companion.
Updates are designed to preserve saves, settings and installed textures. Nevertheless, copy the entire save directory before changing versions or experimenting with files. A backup is especially useful while the project is still under active development.
A safe first-session test
- Launch the European GEDP01 image and play until the game allows a normal memory-card save.
- Use one of the four pause-menu save-anywhere slots.
- Exit and relaunch the recompilation.
- Load both types of save, then continue far enough to confirm that the returned location, inventory and story state are correct.
Do this before beginning a long campaign. Testing both systems catches a bad image path, permissions problem or early-release regression while recovery is still easy.
Are achievements supported?
Native achievements are unconfirmed. The current official README documents neither an in-game achievement system nor RetroAchievements integration. There is therefore no supported promise of Xbox- or PlayStation-style trophies, platform-synced unlocks, or an external achievement account recording your progress.

If achievements matter to your playthrough, treat the recompilation as a game without a documented achievement layer. Watch the project’s release notes or maintainer announcements for an explicit implementation statement rather than assuming that a future build will inherit achievement support from an emulator or storefront.
Can you use HD textures or other mods?
The documented enhancement route is texture replacement, not a general-purpose gameplay-mod framework. The project supports the Eternal Darkness HD Texture Pack in Dolphin DDS format. A separate PAL supplement supplies screens and title text that are missing from the base pack.

The README credits the texture pack to Zombie and directs users to its Dolphin-forums distribution. Place the DDS files in a textures folder as described by the build’s setup instructions. DDS is already compressed for graphics hardware, so it normally consumes less video memory than equivalent PNG replacements.

- Start with an unmodified installation and confirm that the GEDP01 image boots and reaches gameplay.
- Close the game and create the required
texturesdirectory if the launcher has not already created it. - Copy the base HD texture pack into that directory.
- Add the PAL supplement so European screens and title text are covered.
- Launch again and inspect menus, title screens, several rooms and any transition screens.
Do not assume that arbitrary Dolphin gameplay modifications, memory patches or unrelated texture conventions are guaranteed to work. The documented path establishes texture replacement; it does not advertise a universal mod loader. If a modification causes missing graphics or a crash, remove the newest files first and retest the untouched build.

What resolution and frame rate does it support?
The recompilation renders at the display’s resolution, with fixed presentation choices available through 4K. It supports native 16:9 as well as 4:3, rebuilt sharp baked shadows, redrawn text and modern controller prompts. On 90 Hz or 120 Hz displays, it can insert frames between the game’s 60-fps frames for smoother motion. Frame insertion is not the same as changing the original game’s simulation rate: the underlying game remains a 60-fps title.
There is no published hardware benchmark or universal frame-rate guarantee in the official README. Performance depends on the host device, graphics backend, resolution, texture load and scene. A machine that reaches a stable result in one room may still expose a driver or shader problem elsewhere.
What does “4K/60 on PS5” mean?
A current 2026 guide reports a developer claim of 4K/60 on PS5 and discusses Steam Deck testing. That statement should be read as a developer-reported target, not as an independent benchmark or a completed full-playthrough result. The same report describes the project as unfinished and does not establish that every area, loading transition and save cycle remains stable at that output.
For a practical expectation, treat 4K as a supported rendering target and 60 fps as the intended baseline, then validate your own hardware with several areas, menus, cutscenes and repeated save/load cycles.

How to install and start the recompilation
You need a supported computer or Steam Deck, a legally owned European GEDP01 disc, and your own dump of that disc in .iso or .gcm format. Keep the original dump unchanged; work from a copy if you need to test file placement or alternate front ends.
- Verify the disc region. Confirm that the physical disc is the European GEDP01 release. The USA GEDE01 image is not supported by the current build.
- Create your own image. Dump the disc to
.isoor.gcmusing a method appropriate to your legally owned media. The project distributes no Nintendo game assets, so downloading a packaged game image is not part of the supported setup. - Download the current platform build. Use the project’s release page and select the macOS, Windows or Linux build that matches your system. Steam Deck users use the Linux build in their preferred desktop or game-mode workflow.
- Provide the image to the launcher. Put the GEDP01 image in the location requested during first launch. Complete the launcher’s first-run translation or path-selection step rather than guessing at a directory name.
- Boot without enhancements. Reach gameplay once before installing textures. This separates a base compatibility problem from an enhancement problem.
- Add textures, if wanted. Install the 2.9 GB DDS pack and the 10.7 MB PAL supplement in the documented
texturesfolder, then test menus and rooms. - Test saving. Create one recomp save-anywhere slot and one original memory-card save, quit, relaunch and load both.
- Stress-test portable use. On Steam Deck, play through multiple areas and perform several save/load cycles. A successful boot alone does not demonstrate that a complete playthrough is stable.
Recompilation or Dolphin: which should you use?
Dolphin is the established GameCube emulator and the safer fallback when compatibility maturity matters most. The recompilation instead offers a native build and project-specific conveniences, but it remains an active community project. Keeping both available is sensible if you are starting a long campaign.

Use the recompilation when
- Your image is European GEDP01.
- You value native builds, project-integrated presentation changes and four convenient save slots.
- You are comfortable keeping backups and reporting or working around early-release bugs.
Keep Dolphin available when
- The recompilation refuses to boot your image or encounters a progression-blocking bug.
- You own a different regional image.
- You need the established virtual-card and save-state workflow while waiting for a recompilation fix.
Troubleshooting common problems
The game says the image is unsupported
Check the disc identifier before changing settings. The current build requires European GEDP01 and does not support USA GEDE01. Re-dumping an unsupported region will not solve the mismatch; you need the required European release.
The game does not boot
Remove texture files and retry with the unchanged image. Confirm that the file is an .iso or .gcm, that the launcher points to the correct location, and that the dump was not altered. If the base game launches, add the DDS pack back in stages.

Textures are missing or menus look wrong
Verify that DDS files are inside the expected textures directory and that the PAL supplement is installed alongside the base pack. The supplement exists specifically for European screens and title text that the base pack does not cover.
A save disappeared after an update
Exit the program, inspect the saves/ directory and restore your backup before trying additional launches. Recomp updates are intended to preserve saves, settings and textures, but a copy of the directory is the safest recovery path during development.
Performance is uneven
Test first at the display’s native resolution without the texture pack, then reintroduce 4K or high-resolution textures. Compare several rooms and transitions rather than relying on the title screen. On 90/120 Hz displays, disable frame insertion temporarily if you are diagnosing judder or driver-specific behavior; it is a presentation option layered between 60-fps frames, not a fix for a slow host system.

Choose Eternal Darkness Recomp if you have a legally dumped European GEDP01 disc and want native builds, four save-anywhere slots and a modernized presentation with optional DDS textures. Approach it as Version 0.9.0 software under active development: achievements are unconfirmed, arbitrary gameplay mods are not promised, and 4K/60 should be validated on your own hardware. Keep Dolphin as the established fallback for unsupported regions, boot failures or progression problems.
