Engadget reported on July 2, 2025, that tension was already present at Halo Studios before Microsoft’s layoffs that day. The account came from one unnamed developer described as having knowledge of the situation; Engadget did not independently establish the source’s claims or identify the project the developer said was in crisis.
What Engadget reported about Halo Studios
In its July 2, 2025 report, Engadget said the studio’s atmosphere was tense, particularly around a project the unnamed developer described as recently being in crisis. The developer said, “There’s been a lot of tension and pep talks trying to rally folks to ship,” and added, “I don’t think anybody is really happy about the quality of the product right now.” Those comments are an anonymous employee’s account, not an official statement from Halo Studios or Microsoft.
Engadget did not name the project. The report therefore does not establish whether the developer was referring to the next mainline Halo game, Halo: Infinite, or another project. It said Halo Studios was working on multiple games, including the next mainline installment, while also stewarding Halo: Infinite. The studio had previously been known as 343 Industries.
How the layoffs relate to the reported tension
The report framed the tension as preceding Microsoft’s July 2, 2025 workforce cuts, rather than as a reaction to them. It does not identify a single cause for the workplace mood or establish how the layoffs affected the studio afterward.

Engadget reported that at least five Halo Studios employees were fired in the cuts. It also estimated that 200 to 300 people remained at the studio. Neither figure was presented as an official Microsoft headcount: the first is the article’s reported minimum, and the second is its estimate. Engadget separately reported that 9,000 Microsoft employees were affected company-wide; that number should not be read as a count of Xbox employees.
What the report does—and does not—establish
- It establishes what Engadget reported: one unnamed developer described tension, pep talks, and dissatisfaction with a project’s quality before the July 2025 cuts.
- It does not identify the project: linking the “crisis” comment to a particular Halo game would go beyond the report.
- It is not a current staffing or morale update: the article is dated July 2, 2025, and does not establish what changed afterward.
Engadget also situated the 2025 cuts against an earlier round of layoffs at the studio in 2023. For this story, the central point is its account that tension was present before the July 2025 layoffs—not a proven explanation of the studio’s subsequent conditions.
