The Evercade Nexus looks like the strongest Evercade handheld yet for players who want a larger screen and analogue controls without giving up physical cartridges. Its 5.89-inch display and dual sticks make it a more inviting home for 3D games such as the bundled Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie. But “best” is a review judgment, not a result established by standardized head-to-head testing: the Nexus is also large, its resolution is modest by modern handheld standards, and early reviewers noted control and comfort compromises.
What the Evercade Nexus adds
The Nexus keeps Evercade’s cartridge-based approach and adds hardware aimed at a broader range of retro games. Blaze lists a single cartridge slot, support for 32- and 64-bit games, a 5.89-inch IPS display, dual analogue sticks, Wi-Fi 6, TATE mode and EverSync local wireless play. Existing Evercade cartridges work across Evercade devices, according to Tom’s Guide, so owners can bring their physical libraries with them rather than start over with a new digital storefront.

The standard bundle includes the console, a Banjo-Kazooie Double Pack cartridge containing Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie, a USB-C-to-USB-A charging cable and a quick-start guide. That pairing gives the analogue sticks an immediate purpose: they are a natural fit for 3D platforming in a way a handheld built only around older 2D games might not be.

Is the screen good for portable retro play?
Blaze specifies a 5.89-inch IPS panel with an 840 × 512 resolution and brightness of 500+ nits. Those are manufacturer-listed specifications, not independent measurements. The large display is the Nexus’s clearest quality-of-life upgrade: Tom’s Guide’s October 8, 2026 hands-on report described it as bright and said the opening area of Banjo-Kazooie looked sharp. Retro Handhelds likewise found the screen large and bright enough to work well for games in the library.

There is a trade-off. Retro Handhelds noted that 840 × 512 gives the display lower pixel density than some modern handheld panels. That matters if you expect phone-like sharpness or plan to use the Nexus as a general-purpose device; it matters less if your priority is a roomy screen for the games designed for Evercade’s library. TATE mode rotates play for vertical-screen arcade games, a useful option for titles designed around a portrait-oriented display.
How do the controls and comfort hold up?
Hands-on impressions point to a capable but not flawless control setup. Tom’s Guide found the D-pad tactile but described the triggers as sluggish. Retro Handhelds also praised the D-pad and found the analogue sticks useful, while judging their feel less premium than some newer sticks. These are reviewers’ impressions, not a controlled comparison across devices.

The Nexus’s size helps make room for its screen and dual sticks, but it also affects how it feels to hold. Retro Handhelds called the device large and well built, then noted that its lower corners could press into the reviewer’s palms during longer sessions. The console measures 215 × 111 × 34 mm and weighs 410 g, according to Blaze’s launch announcement. Those dimensions make portability a matter of preference: the Nexus is better suited to a bag than to slipping into a pocket, and players sensitive to grip pressure may want to consider shorter sessions or try one in person.

What are EverSync and Wi-Fi for?
EverSync is local wireless multiplayer between two Nexus consoles. Time Extension reports that the direct connection does not require Wi-Fi or an internet connection and can allow players to share one cartridge for supported multiplayer games. The two-console requirement is important: EverSync is not a way to play wirelessly with someone who owns a different Evercade device. Retro Handhelds could not test the feature because its reviewer did not have a second Nexus.
Wi-Fi 6 is listed for the console’s wireless connectivity. Tom’s Guide reports that Wi-Fi supports system updates and limited downloadable extras such as Game of the Month, but that Evercade does not offer a general digital storefront. The platform remains centered on physical cartridges; check the current catalog for specific games or collections, since availability can change.

How does it compare with other Evercade handhelds?
The Nexus makes the most sense as an upgrade for existing Evercade owners who want a larger display or analogue controls. Its cartridge compatibility protects the value of games they already own; the decision is mainly whether the hardware additions justify the price and size. Buyers choosing their first Evercade should also account for the cost and selection of physical cartridges, since there is no general digital store to replace that library.
| What to compare | Why it matters on the Nexus |
|---|---|
| Screen size and resolution | The 5.89-inch screen offers more viewing area, while its 840 × 512 resolution has lower pixel density than some modern handheld panels. |
| Controls | Dual analogue sticks expand the kinds of games that feel at home, but early reviewers noted sluggish triggers and sticks that do not feel as premium as some newer designs. |
| Portability and comfort | At 410 g and 215 × 111 × 34 mm, it is a substantial handheld; one reviewer reported pressure from the lower corners during longer sessions. |
| Games you already own | Existing Evercade cartridges work across Evercade devices, so current owners can weigh the hardware upgrade without replacing their physical library. |
| Battery expectations | Blaze rates the 5000 mAh battery at “5+ hours”; actual runtime depends on use, and the figure is not a standardized independent test. |
Verdict: who should buy the Evercade Nexus?
The Nexus is a persuasive premium option for Evercade fans who want a bigger screen, dual analogue controls and the familiar cartridge library in a portable format. The included Banjo games help show why those additions matter. Early reviews support calling it the best Evercade handheld yet as an attributed judgment, particularly for players interested in 3D games; they do not establish an objective winner through standardized comparison.
It is less compelling for someone whose priority is a small, light handheld, the sharpest possible display, or a low-cost way to access a large digital catalog. Existing owners should decide whether the screen and sticks add enough to their current setup to justify the launch price, while newcomers should factor physical game purchases into the long-term cost.
