How Everdale went from cancellation to a new team
- October 3, 2022: Supercell ended development. The company said Everdale did not meet its ambitions for a Supercell game and announced that it planned to shut down the servers on October 31, 2022, at 10:00 UTC. Supercell also described a process for eligible players to transfer purchases to other live Supercell games through player support. - January 26, 2023: Supercell announced the transfer to Metacore. The handover followed Supercell’s cancellation decision. Supercell said Metacore’s team had begun work and would explore what could or should change about Everdale. Supercell’s transfer announcement.
- January 27, 2023: Metacore described an exploratory project. CEO Mika Tammenkoski said the company was testing hypotheses about the game’s audience and market fit. - September 18, 2024: Metacore stopped work and said it would return the IP. The company announced that it could not find a way to improve Everdale’s market fit and make it a sustainable business. It said the intellectual property would return to Supercell. Metacore’s discontinuation announcement.
What the “second chance” meant
The phrase describes Metacore’s opportunity to revisit Everdale after Supercell cancelled its version. In a January 2023 interview, GamesBeat reported that Metacore planned to recreate it as a free-to-play mobile game focused on building and team play. That was a description of the project’s direction at the time, not confirmation that a rebuilt game would launch. Metacore’s own public statements emphasized experimentation and made no release promise. GamesBeat’s interview and report.
Why Metacore discontinued Everdale
Metacore said its team explored the game’s world and community, spoke with players, and tested ways to strengthen its market fit. It concluded that it had not found a path to make the game a sustainable business. Tammenkoski summarized the decision: “Despite our efforts, we were unable to find a path to improve its market fit and make it a sustainable business.”
Those are Metacore’s stated reasons. Its announcement does not provide financial figures or a quantified explanation of the game’s commercial prospects, so the decision should not be recast as proof of a particular revenue, player-count, or cost problem.

Is Everdale coming back?
The latest directly relevant official status established here is Metacore’s September 18, 2024 announcement that it had stopped development and would return the IP to Supercell. The official Supercell announcements index does not conclusively establish whether a later revival was announced. Without a later confirmation, it would be inaccurate to say that Everdale has relaunched, is in development, or is currently playable. Supercell’s official announcements index.
