On July 2, 2025, Xbox said it had stopped development on Perfect Dark and Everwild and would wind down several unannounced projects. The Initiative, the studio making the Perfect Dark reboot, also closed. Xbox did not publicly identify all of the unnamed projects, so the complete cancellation list is not known.
Which Xbox games were canceled in 2025?
The publicly named cancellations were Perfect Dark and Everwild. Xbox Games Studios head Matt Booty was reported as telling employees: “We have made the decision to stop development of Perfect Dark and Everwild as well as wind down several unannounced projects across our portfolio.” Windows Central reported that quotation from an internal memo on July 3, 2025; it was not a published official transcript. Windows Central’s report covered the memo and the additional projects.
Perfect Dark
The reboot was in development at The Initiative, which was closed as part of the July 2025 news. The cancellation of the game and the closure of its studio are related, but distinct: one is the end of a project; the other is the end of a development studio. VGC reported both the game cancellation and the studio closure.
Everwild
Rare’s Everwild was a separate canceled game, not a project from The Initiative. Microsoft’s reported memo named it alongside Perfect Dark. VGC also reported Microsoft’s confirmation of the cancellation.

What happened to the unannounced Xbox projects?
Booty’s reported memo said Xbox would wind down “several unannounced projects,” but the public statement did not provide a complete list or name each project. The scope of the cuts therefore cannot be reconstructed from the public announcement alone.
Windows Central reported that a new ZeniMax Online Studios MMORPG was among the affected work. The project was reportedly codenamed Blackbird, but Xbox had not officially announced it as a title. Treat Blackbird as a reported identity for an unannounced project, not as a game Xbox publicly confirmed by name. Windows Central’s report on the MMORPG describes that reporting.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why did Xbox cancel these games?
Booty’s reported explanation was that Xbox was adjusting priorities and concentrating resources amid a changing industry landscape. That is a portfolio-level rationale, not a detailed account of why either named game was selected. The available reporting does not establish a project-specific cause, such as a particular production problem, milestone, or budget decision. Pure Xbox reported Booty’s broad explanation.
