If you want a Figure Player (FP) in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, use an amiibo that represents the fighter you want to train. The game turns a compatible fighter amiibo into an independent, trainable fighter; other amiibo may have a different scan function instead. Nintendo’s official Super Smash Bros. amiibo lineup is the best index for the named figures, while Nintendo’s update notes document certain special cases.

Which amiibo become Figure Players in Ultimate?

Fighter amiibo from the Super Smash Bros. series are the core figures to look for when you want to create an FP. Nintendo’s lineup includes figures for fighters such as Sora, Pyra, Mythra, Kazuya, Sephiroth, Steve, Alex, and Min Min, alongside earlier releases. Check the official amiibo lineup for the full set of names and figure editions; it is an index of Super Smash Bros. series figures, not a claim that every amiibo Nintendo has made becomes an FP.

The practical rule is to match the figure to the fighter you want in the game. Nintendo confirms, for example, that tapping the Simon Super Smash Bros. Series amiibo in Ultimate makes Simon appear as an FP. Its Pokémon Trainer amiibo entry likewise describes the figure as a fighter that grows over time.

What “usable” means: fighter training versus other scan rewards

Not every amiibo scan that works in Ultimate creates a fighter. Nintendo’s update history distinguishes between amiibo that can be used as Figure Players and figures that grant spirit rewards. In the version 13.0.1 update, released 2 December 2021, Nintendo documented Samus (Metroid Dread) and E.M.M.I. amiibo as supported for spirit rewards when tapped in Games & More; it separately identified Samus (Metroid Dread) as usable as a Figure Player. See Nintendo’s Ultimate update history for that dated compatibility note.

Nintendo does not provide a complete, current per-figure chart covering every non-fighter amiibo’s possible spirit rewards in the cited materials. So, for a training figure, choose an amiibo representing the fighter you want rather than assuming that any amiibo with a scan bonus can become that fighter.

How Figure Players work

An FP is an in-game character created from a compatible fighter amiibo. It fights independently rather than acting as a character you control directly during a match. Nintendo describes FPs as developing through battles: they gain experience, learn skills, and can receive powers from spirits. The Simon product page gives this behavior as an example, and Nintendo’s amiibo FAQ explains amiibo functionality and data use across games.

Before you tap an amiibo

  • You need an amiibo figure, a compatible game, and a compatible system. Nintendo lists Nintendo Switch among the systems that support amiibo.
  • Ultimate can save data to an amiibo. A figure stores data for one game at a time, so using it with another read/write-compatible game may require deleting its existing game data first.
  • Amiibo are optional. Nintendo says compatible games can be played without one.
  • Functionality varies by amiibo and game: some figures save game data, while other uses may simply grant bonus content.

For current stock, price, and whether a figure is new or used, check the retailer at the time you buy; these details are not established by Nintendo’s compatibility pages.
