Spellsword is the best all-around preset class in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered if you want a flexible mix of melee and magic. Sorcerer is the sturdier caster, Assassin is the clearest stealth-archer choice, and Crusader suits a durable warrior who also wants spells. This is a practical editorial ranking, not a measured performance tier list: the best pick depends on how you want to play.
How this Oblivion Remastered class ranking works
Each preset combines a specialization, seven major skills, and +5 bonuses to two favored attributes. Bethesda’s manual puts the role plainly: “Your class defines your way of life and which skills are most important to you.” There are 21 presets, grouped into Combat, Magic, and Stealth specializations, and you can instead build a custom class by choosing your own attributes and major skills. Bethesda’s Oblivion PC manual
The order below weighs whether a class’s major skills support a coherent playstyle, whether its favored attributes help that role, and how many skill choices may compete with one another. That makes it a guide to useful starting frameworks, not a claim that one class will outperform every other in every run. Roleplay goals can be a better reason to choose a class than optimization.
Remastered also redesigned leveling, so original-game advice about class optimization should not be treated as a perfect account of how this version plays. Bethesda describes the redesigned leveling system; PC Gamer’s guide notes that Endurance-related health gains are retroactive in the remaster and describes progression as more forgiving than in the original. All 21 Oblivion Remastered classes, ranked
-
Spellsword
Best for: a flexible melee-and-magic character. Blade, Block, Destruction, Heavy Armor, Illusion, and Restoration give the class tools for close combat, defense, and spellcasting; favored Willpower and Endurance suit that broad role. Its range is its strength, though players who want to focus on only one side may not use the full toolkit.
-
Sorcerer
Best for: a caster who wants more durability than a fragile specialist. A broad set of magic skills is backed by Endurance and Heavy Armor, making this a sturdier alternative to Mage in PC Gamer’s recommendations. Choose it if you want magic to lead without giving up a defensive foundation.
-
Assassin
Best for: stealth-archer play. Sneak, Marksman, Security, Light Armor, and Blade form a clear toolkit for striking from range and handling exploration. PC Gamer identifies it as the closest preset match to Skyrim’s stealth archer.
-
Crusader
Best for: a durable half-warrior, half-caster. Melee skills, Destruction, Restoration, and Heavy Armor support a direct hybrid that can fight up close and use magic. It is a more focused pick than a class that tries to cover every spell school.

Witchhunter
Best for: ranged magical pressure and exploration. Marksman, Conjuration, Destruction, Alchemy, and Security support attacks from a distance, summoned help, and utility; favored Intelligence and Agility fit the hybrid idea. Its major skills do not include armor, so it is less naturally defensive than the leading hybrids.
-
Mage
Best for: a pure spellcaster who wants broad coverage of magic schools. Its Intelligence and Willpower bonuses reinforce that identity. PC Gamer prefers Sorcerer for players who value Endurance and armor, but Mage is the more direct choice if spellcasting is the point.
-
Monk
Best for: an agile, lightly equipped or unarmored character. Marksman, Sneak, Hand-to-Hand, and mobility skills make its identity distinctive, but it lacks the conventional defense of the top-ranked combat builds.
-
Archer
Best for: straightforward ranged combat with stealth support. Marksman, Sneak, and Light Armor fit the role, but Blade, Blunt, and Hand-to-Hand together spend major-skill slots on three competing melee approaches.

-
Battlemage
Best for: a broad spellcaster who also wants weapon options. Its magic coverage and Blade and Blunt skills allow a flexible battlemage concept; the two melee weapon skills may overlap if you intend to specialize in just one.
-
Barbarian
Best for: a fast, physically oriented fighter. Strength, Light Armor, and its physical combat focus support that fantasy, but Blade, Blunt, and Hand-to-Hand all compete for major-skill space.
-
Thief
Best for: a utility-focused character who values stealth, security, archery, and social or economic skills. Sneak, Security, and Marksman serve practical purposes, though its wider social toolkit makes it less concentrated on combat.
-
Nightblade
Best for: a mobile spellsword with Blade, Destruction, Restoration, and Alteration. Acrobatics and Athletics also occupy two major-skill slots; PC Gamer flags that pairing as less useful for class progression because movement naturally raises those skills.

Bard
Best for: a social, roleplay-led hybrid. Illusion, Speechcraft, Mercantile, Alchemy, and Blade offer a mix of conversation, utility, and combat, but those priorities pull in different directions if you want a focused fighter.
-
Scout
Best for: a roaming character with Light Armor and Alchemy. Its mobile identity is clear, but both Acrobatics and Athletics rise through movement. PC Gamer advises against making them major skills, though players who value that roleplay may still prefer the fit.
-
Agent
Best for: stealth and social utility. Sneak, Security, Marksman, and Illusion make a useful toolkit, while Mercantile and Speechcraft make it less direct for a combat-first run.
-
Acrobat
Best for: a mobile character who combines Marksman and Sneak with strong movement skills. It is less compelling for a combat-focused progression because Acrobatics and Speechcraft are not as central to that approach.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered | Standard | Xbox Series X|S & Windows Digital- The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered modernizes the 2006 Game of the Year with all new stunning visuals and refined gameplay.

-
Healer
Best for: a self-imposed supportive-magic roleplay challenge. Restoration is central, but Mercantile and Speechcraft dilute the preset’s direct combat utility for a solo action-RPG playthrough.
-
Pilgrim
Best for: a nonstandard, social or economic adventurer. Security and social skills give it a distinctive flavor, but its combat majors do not settle into one clear damage focus.
-
Rogue
Best for: a lightly armored character with Blade and Alchemy. Those useful foundations are diluted by Athletics, Mercantile, and Illusion, leaving a less focused overall package.
-
Knight
Best for: a traditional knightly fantasy built around Heavy Armor, Block, and Blade. Blade, Blunt, and Hand-to-Hand overlap as combat choices, while favored Personality contributes less directly to fighting.

Warrior
Best for: a straightforward Strength- and Endurance-led fighter who values the archetype over a tightly specialized skill list. Blade, Blunt, and Hand-to-Hand compete for the same general role; a custom warrior can instead pick one weapon line and support skills that match a specific plan.
Should you choose a preset or make a custom class?
Pick a preset when its identity matches the character you want and you are comfortable with all seven major skills. Choose a custom class if you have a clear build in mind and want to select its attributes and major skills yourself. For example, a weapon-focused custom warrior could take one weapon skill rather than several overlapping melee options. Presets remain perfectly valid choices; a custom class is a way to tailor the framework, not a requirement to enjoy the game.
One progression consideration from PC Gamer’s guide is that Acrobatics and Athletics increase through ordinary movement, which is why it recommends avoiding them as major skills. That is useful advice for players trying to shape skill progression, not a rule that overrides a class concept you enjoy. The remaster’s revised leveling also means it is worth avoiding assumptions drawn solely from the original game.
