To run a 24/7 lofi broadcast, feed a playlist of music and visuals you have the rights to use into an encoder such as OBS Studio. In OBS, add a VLC Video Source, select the files, and enable Loop Playlist. You can also enable Shuffle Playlist, but shuffle is not a guaranteed anti-repeat system: OBS does not document a minimum time between plays or a no-repeat window. To reduce quick repeats, build a larger rotation and arrange or test it deliberately.
How the playlist loop works
The encoder—not YouTube’s player—needs to supply the audio and video for a live broadcast. OBS can play local files through a VLC Video Source and send that output to YouTube Live. YouTube’s Loop control repeats a video or playlist for someone watching in the YouTube player; it does not make a playlist the input to an encoder broadcast.
Playlist of tracks
Use OBS’s VLC Video Source for a playlist. VLC must be installed, and the media files must remain accessible to the computer running OBS. Load the files, then choose whether to loop the listed sequence or shuffle it. OBS lists MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV among the supported audio formats. One long mix or file
If your lofi mix is already one continuous audio or video file, use OBS’s regular Media Source and enable its separate Loop setting. A single long mix avoids track-to-track transitions, but it repeats as a whole when it ends.

How to set up the 24/7 broadcast with OBS
- Prepare your media. Assemble the audio and visual files you have permission to broadcast. Keep them on the computer or storage that will run OBS; an external drive is optional, not a requirement.
- Install OBS Studio and VLC. In OBS, add a VLC Video Source to the scene and select your playlist files. Turn on Loop Playlist. Turn on Shuffle Playlist only if randomized order suits your channel. For a single file, add a Media Source and enable Loop instead. Refer to OBS’s media-source instructions for the available controls.
- Create or schedule the stream. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Copy the server URL and stream key YouTube provides, then enter them in OBS’s streaming settings. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes this connection. Live streaming requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, according to YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
- Preview before going live. Check that the picture plays, the audio is audible and not clipping, and the playlist advances and loops as expected. Monitor YouTube’s stream health and leave upload-bandwidth headroom: YouTube recommends leaving 20% room in its streaming tips. That is guidance, not a guarantee that a particular connection can sustain a broadcast.
- Keep a separate recording if you need an archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. A continuous 24-hour broadcast should not be treated as a guaranteed complete YouTube archive. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
How to reduce frequent song repeats
OBS documents looping and shuffle controls, but not track history, a minimum gap between plays, or a repeat-spacing guarantee across playlist cycles. Shuffle can change the order; do not describe it as an anti-repeat scheduler or promise a repeat interval unless your playback tool actually supports and is configured for one.
- Use a broader rotation. Add more tracks you are authorized to use so the full sequence takes longer to cycle. There is no documented ideal playlist length or universally suitable repeat interval; choose based on your catalogue and the listening experience you want.
- Curate the order. If you do not want random transitions, arrange tracks deliberately and vary energy, tempo, or mood between adjacent selections where appropriate.
- Test actual behavior. Preview the source and check what happens when the playlist reaches its end. If shuffle is enabled, observe how the installed setup behaves before relying on it live; the OBS documentation does not establish a guaranteed distribution or repeat pattern.
- Use a long mix where it fits. A single extended file can avoid short track cycles, though the whole mix will repeat when it ends.
Music rights and live-stream interruptions
Only broadcast recordings for which you have the necessary rights, including the rights to use the music in a live stream. YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility for required rights, including music licensing rights, on the provider. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches; a match can replace the stream with a placeholder, and unresolved third-party content can interrupt or terminate the broadcast.

If you have a license for third-party music, that alone may not prevent a live interruption. YouTube says the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Review YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams and confirm arrangements with the rights owner before broadcasting.
Troubleshooting a lofi loop
- The playlist will not load: Confirm VLC is installed, the source points to files that still exist, and the formats are supported. Re-select files if they were moved or the drive is disconnected.
- The playlist stops at the end: Check that Loop Playlist is enabled on the VLC Video Source. For a single file, check the separate Loop option on the Media Source.
- Songs repeat sooner than expected: Shuffle does not promise repeat spacing. Enlarge or curate the rotation, test its behavior, or use a playback system with a history-aware scheduler if a defined no-repeat window is essential.
- The audio or video drops during the live broadcast: Check OBS preview and YouTube stream health, then investigate the computer, media availability, and network. YouTube advises monitoring quality and leaving upload capacity beyond the stream’s bitrate; network disruption can still break a stream.
- The stream is interrupted after music is detected: Check YouTube’s live copyright notices and resolve rights issues. For licensed third-party material, ask the rights owner whether the channel needs Content ID allowlisting.
