In Suikoden I HD Remaster, duel dialogue signals the opponent’s next move. Counter an Attack with Special Attack, a Defend with Attack, and a Special Attack with Defend. The phrase lists below cover the three encounters documented for the remaster: the Hero versus Kwanda Rosman, Pahn versus Teo McDohl, and the Hero versus Teo McDohl.
How to read duel dialogue
Before you choose a command, the opponent speaks. Treat the line as a clue to the action they are about to take, then choose its counter:
| Opponent’s move | Your counter |
|---|---|
| Attack | Special Attack |
| Defend | Attack |
| Special Attack | Defend |
Konami’s official duel description confirms the three commands and says damage is calculated according to the advantage or disadvantage of each character’s action. It does not provide a phrase-by-phrase dialogue guide; the mappings and examples below come from the secondary Shortcut G Station Suikoden I HD Remaster guide.

Kwanda will Attack: choose Special Attack
- “You’re good. Can you withstand this?”
- “Grrr! You are good, son of Teo! Now it’s my turn!”
- “Hahaha! Puny attacks like that won’t work on me!”
- “You shall taste the sharpness of my blade!”
- “You don’t stand a chance! But I shall show no mercy!”
- “You got me! Perhaps I have underestimated you.”
- “At a loss, are you? But I’ll show you no mercy!”
- “Well done. But can you take this?”
- “What’s the matter? If you won’t attack, then I will!”
- “That’s nothing!”
Kwanda will Defend: choose Attack
- “It’s no use! I see through your attack!”
- “Come on, your turn! Come at me with everything you’ve got!”
- “How cautious you are… As befits a leader.”
- “Think you can break through my impenetrable defenses, do you?”
- “Come on, you’re boring me. Show me what you’ve got!”
- “You got me! But not this time!”
- “Now it’s your turn. Come on!”
- “Pretty good. How about another one?”
- “Carefully…”
- “What now?”
Kwanda will use Special Attack: choose Defend
- “Victory is decided in an instant! I shall put my all into this strike!”
- “Haha, come on! Once more!”
- “Very well… If that’s how you want it!”
- “This is going nowhere. Very well… Prepare yourself!”
- “Impossible! How are you able to dodge my attacks?!”
- “The next one won’t be so easy!”
- “Well done. You’re a worthy opponent. Now it’s my turn!”
- “Here we go again!”
- “Take this!”
- “I’ll get you!”
Pahn versus Teo McDohl
During Pahn’s duel with Teo, use the same counter cycle; the following are the guide’s remaster dialogue examples.
Teo will Attack: choose Special Attack
- “This is getting nowhere… Here I come!”
- “Saw through my attack, did you?”
- “Is that all you’ve got? Now it’s my turn!”
- “Pathetic, Pahn. Let me show you how it’s done!”
- “My sword is still sharp as ever!”
- “You got me with that one, Pahn… Now it’s my turn!”
- “Do you see how we’re mismatched?”
- “Pretty good, Pahn.”
- “The numbness in my hands, it’s real.”
- “All you can do is defend, Pahn? No mercy!”
Teo will Defend: choose Attack
- “Come at me, Pahn!”
- “It seems I lost my cool. I must be more careful…”
- “This next one will not get past me!”
- “Impressive, Pahn, seeing through my attack like that. I must be more cautious.”
- “All right, do it again!”
- “Come on, Pahn. See if you can kill me.”
- “Do you give up?”
- “What’s the matter, Pahn? How about another round?”
- “You’re a smart one, Pahn.”
- “You’re better than I thought.”
Teo will use Special Attack: choose Defend
- “I shall finish this with one strike.”
- “Impossible… Take this, then.”
- “You have shown me your techniques… Now, I shall show you mine!”
- “If you will not come at me… then I shall come to you!”
- “My most powerful technique…”
- “Can you dodge my blade, Pahn?”
- “Excellent, Pahn. You’re a real fighter. Here’s another!”
- “Finish me with a single blow!”
- “The next one will be more painful.”
- “That’s… no good.”
Hero versus Teo McDohl
The Hero’s duel with Teo has its own documented set of lines. The responses remain Attack, Special Attack, and Defend according to the same counter cycle.

- “Always on the defensive… That will not bring you victory!”
- “Did you see that coming?”

- “That was pretty good. Now it’s my turn.”
- “The numbness in my hands, it’s real!”

Teo will Defend: choose Attack

- “My deadly sword…”
- “Now that I’ve seen what you’ve got, I’ll show you what I can do.”
- “The next one will be more painful.”
- “Hmmm. Here I come again!”
What to do when a line is not listed
The guide offers a rule of thumb, not an official Konami rule or a guarantee for every possible line:
- Plain aggression tends to signal Attack.
- Caution or an invitation for you to strike tends to signal Defend.
- Talk of a killing blow, a deadly sword, an ultimate technique, or using all one’s might tends to signal Special Attack.
Use those cues as a fallback when a line is unfamiliar, rather than treating any single word as conclusive. The detailed phrase mappings are from a secondary guide; Konami’s system page confirms how the commands and damage advantage work but does not verify these individual lines.

Remaster dialogue versus the original PlayStation version
The phrase lists are labeled for Suikoden I HD Remaster and use its retranslated dialogue. The guide warns that dialogue and item names differ from the original 1996 PlayStation version, so these quotations should not be used as a phrase table for that release. The guide documents three duels, but does not establish that its lists include every line present in the game.
